LEAGUE leaders Retford produced a superb first half display to help them to victory over FC United at Gigg Lane on Saturday.
The Rebels got off to the worst possible start when the visitors opened the scoring with their first attack of the game after three minutes through striker Colin Marrison.
Marrison then capitalised on some hesitant FC United defending from a corner to double their lead from close-range in the 17th minute.
And Retford effectively ended the game as a contest shortly after when Darrell Thomas drilled past Sam Ashton to make it 3-0.
Carlos Roca gave FC a glimmer of hope in the 41st minute with a sensational 25-yard strike, but Retford restored their three goal cushion ten minutes into the second half as Marrison completed his hat-trick.
However, the Rebels refused to give up and Simon Carden headed home Ben Deegan’s cross in the 61st minute to set up a tense final half an hour.
But despite their best efforts, Karl Marginson’s men could not claw their way back as the visitors closed out the game to take a well-earned three points.
What is your verdict on the action? Have your say.

1st half-very poor, retford looked like they would score everytime they went forward
2nd-better but the scoreline flatters fc
jan/feb are tough months fixture wise, we won't go down as there are worse teams than us. also the demise of kings lynn and durham's position means we will stay up
I think the greengrocer is being found out in his tactics and formations. It would help to have a fluid back four and midfield rather than flat rows of players which are easily bypassed (rather like rows of cabbages and potatoes!).
anyway, I assume this means you are still at the bottom. Let me know where and when you are having your relegation party, it should be quite some knees up!.
In my opinion it was a fair result. There keeper was out of order throwing three punches at Fc players when we scored our third goal which was then ruled out for no reason. I understand this was caught on camera and a copy of the film is on it's way to the FA. I think it's fair to say the Referee didn’t have a good game but Retford were the better team on the day and deserved the win. If they can play like that for the rest of the season they will definitely be in the playoffs if not champions.
THE DREAM IS WELL AND TRULLY OVER.
The dream is well and truly alive with decent, affordable Saturday 3pm football and the opportunity to stand with mates and make a bit of noise (without a jesters hat in site).
Relegation beckons. I'm looking forward to a £200 payout!
All credit to Retford. They played some really good football and are probably the best side we have played all season. We have probably found our true level with our current squad of players. I don't think we can afford to go any higher until we get our own ground,so at the moment we will have to make do with what we have. We are not far away from where we were last season, points wise and goals wise. The league is just much more competative this season, with allteams capable of beating each other. We have great faith in Carl and the team to turn things round. It would be no great disaster if we manage to stay in this division for next season. At least there is more atmosphere and singing at an FC game than o t. Come to think of it there is more atmosphere on the moon than at o t. FC till I DIE
I really think it is time that Marginson goes! How long can he keep up the charade that he actually knows what he is doing? He is out of his depth but the rose tinted glasses brigade refuse to have anything said about him.
I am intrigued by these regular attempts by the self-styled 'humourists, it's all a bit of banter' posters to call for Margie's sacking. Conspiracy or what's that all about? A couple of weeks ago it was all snide remarks about veg deliveries. Pathetic
Sands eightyone. Perhaps the "rose tinted glasses brigade" hasn't forgotten Marginson got us promoted three times in four years. I personally like this division and would happily stay in the Unibond until we get out own ground.

I couldn't agree more.
PS Can you tell Margy I need an extra bag of sprouts for Christmas day!

15/12/2009 at 11:15 - just pointing out that there appears to be no plan B when plan A doesent work. Results speak for themselves and to suggest where you are in the league is down to some mythical conspiracy makes me think you are even more barking mad than I gave you credit for.
We need to return to our Kick and Rush roots if we want to be promoted this season. We still have games in hand! What a great year to be a Pole! Tomasz Kuszczak at the goal!
I am not talking about the league position Duck Egg. As FCUM has several games in hand (which may or may not produce points) the league position is potentially misleading. Therefore relegation may or may not be a risk. I am merely amused by these sudden demands for Margie's head. Surely the likes of you and Walnut Dashboard would relish FC relegation, and if so, and you think Margie a poor manager, then you would prefer him to remain in charge. Ditto Benitez at Liverpool!
Sack the board, sack the board, sack the board!!! Er naaahh! We'll leave the sacking mantras to our regular Citeh fan contributors on this site (they are experts at this!). How many managers have they had since 1986? How much success in that time? Yeah that's right, it's what happens when you sack on a regular basis. Seeing as Margy has won us 5 trophies in 4 years i hardly think a few lost games warrants that. As mentioned there are the deluded at other clubs i could mention calling for the head of their manager after having only lost one match this season in the league! Talk about detached from reality!

To the sad and bitter blues.
Have FC spent £200 mill on players to be a mid table team, who judging by tonights game at spurs, will be battling for a europa cup place at the end of the season. I don't look on the blue section, so I don't know the comments that are put there, but I can imagine its to sack hughes and then 6 months after hughes goes, will you then shout and scream to sack the board.
Retford are a good team, but did anyone else notice that they started time wasting after 8 mins of the 1st half, when they were 1 nil ahead.
I agree with another comment on this page, that I enjoy the level of football in the Unibond prem. As an FC and MUFC fan, I want FC to stay a non-league club because I have a league club which I support and they're not too bad. If we were to progress higher in the pyramid, we would soon be going to away games and paying silly money and the demands for wages to play for FC would end up raising ticket prices at home also.
Fc need to look for central defenders with pace, as when we face any team wih pace, we really struggle. Saying that, even the Retford management team admitted that the first goal was offside. The game might have been a different affair if that goal had been flagged for offside.
well said jimmy d but if fc get their own ground, they'll be in the league as soon as. just look at afc wimbledon as an example, they have bigger average crowds than most of league 2
The FC United Megacabin at Gigg lane will be open this Friday 18th December to enable supporters to get all the new FC United merchandise in time for Christmas. The cabin will be open from 1:00pm until 4:30pm.

Another mind numbing post from hillbilly-blue, Inbredvill, which has no bearing on reality.
FC United has confirmed the away fixture against Guiseley scheduled for Sunday 20th December 2009 is postponed due to a frozen pitch. FC United's next game is Ashton United away on Boxing Day and our next home game is Friday 1st January against Ossett Town with kick off at 3.00pm.
