FC UNITED are through to the FA Trophy second qualifying round after a 3-1 win over Ashton.

Goals from Phil Marsh, Adam Tong and Carlos Roca were enough to see the Rebels through a tricky tie against the Unibond Premier League leaders at Hurst Cross.

“It was scrappy but to come out 3-1 winners at a tough place like Ashton is a great testament to the players,” said FC boss Karl Marginson.

The visitors broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute after an evenly-matched opening to the game.

Ben Deegan flicked on Jerome Wright’s cross to Marsh, and the striker had time to take a touch before coolly slotting home from 12 yards.

Tong then increased FC’s advantage in spectacular fashion in the 43rd minute with a dipping half-volley from 35 yards that left Ashton ‘keeper Terry Smith helpless.

The Rebels seemed to be in complete control, but Ashton hit back straight from the restart with Matty O’Neill taking advantage of some careless defending to make it 2-1 to the visitors at the break.

The home side came out strongly in the second half in search of the equaliser, but the Rebels remained dangerous on the counter-attack. Winger Carlos Roca finally sealed the victory with a brilliant strike from the edge of the area with 20 minutes to go.

The win extends FC’s unbeaten run in all competitions to six games.

“Winning breeds confidence and we’re going in the right direction,” said Marginson.

FC United have been drawn away to Lancaster City or Chasetown in the second qualifying round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy on Saturday 31st October.

A late goal from Lancaster's leading scorer Jordan Connerton meant that the Dolly Blues and Chasetown drew 1-1 at the Giant Axe on Saturday and will replay on Tuesday night with the winner hosting FC United.

United have been to Lancaster's Giant Axe ground before on the opening day of the 2007/08 season and were unlucky to be defeated 2-1 as we made a slow start to the season which would end in play-off final glory. The Reds have never faced Staffordshire's Chasetown.

Both of the opponents have the potential to provide a decent test for United as Lancaster currently sit fourth in the UniBond Division One North and The Scholars are sixth in the southern section.

All they have had to say lately between them is Silly's pronouncement that Staly are now a pub team. Oh dear ! Is that the best you can do ? I'm happy the 3 stooges are staying away from these pages John, I haven't read one interesting thing they have ever posted and they just use up space pointlessly. Anyway onto Saturday, i'm looking forward to it but it's going to be a very tough game at Northwich. Without their points deduction they would be 2nd in BSN so they will be a test for us.

Since they are only on if we have bad results, I say FC need to be consistent, starting with Northwich and North Ferriby.

FA Cup 4th Round Qualifying – Northwich Victoria v FC United of Manchester, Saturday 24th October 2009, Kick off 3:00pm. This game is to be played at the Victoria Stadium, Wincham Avenue, Northwich, Cheshire, CW9 6GB. Northwich flags on any type of stick are not permitted into the ground

Victoria operates cashless turnstiles meaning that tickets have to be bought in advance from the ticket office. This ticket is then shown at the turnstile to gain entry into the ground. FC United will receive a batch of tickets in advance of Saturday which will go on sale at the FC United office Hope Mills, 113, Pollard Street, Manchester M4 7JA, between 9:30am and 4:30pm from Wednesday 21st October until Friday 23rd October 2009. Payment will be by cash only

Alternatively Northwich Victoria’s ticket office will be open from 9.30am until 7pm every day until Saturday. Northwich Victoria’s ticket office will be open from 10am on the day of the game. If supporters are unable to purchase tickets ahead of Saturday they are advised to purchase tickets on arrival rather than wait until near kick off. The ticket prices are, in keeping with Northwich’s usual league prices:

Travel By car: From the M6 Motorway - Leave motorway at Junction19.Take the A556 towards Northwich. After two and a half miles you will pass through traffic lights and the Smoker Public House on your left hand side. Continue on the A556 for a further quarter mile then immediately prior to the start of a dual carriage way bear right via traffic lights onto the A559 sign posted Northwich after a further three quarters of mile at traffic lights turn right. Continue for one mile on the A559 then at the cross roads by the Black Greyhound Public House turn left into Wincham Lane.
Immediately past a Car Show Room turn left into Wincham Avenue and proceed to the roundabout, which is almost at the end of the Avenue. The Stadium entrance is on the right hand side just beyond the roundabout.

From the M56 Motorway - Leave motorway at Junction 10. Take the A559 towards Northwich for 6miles. At the cross roads by the Black Greyhound Public House turn right into Wincham Lane. Immediately past a Car Show Room turn left into Wincham Avenue and proceed to the roundabout, which is almost at the end of the Avenue. The Stadium entrance is on the right hand side just beyond the roundabout.

By rail: The nearest railway station to the ground is Lostock Gralam. Trains leave from Manchester Piccadilly at 17 minutes past the hour and take 50 minutes. These trains also stop at Northwich 5 minutes later. Further details are available from www.thetrainline.com

Coach: The Club will be running a coach for supporters for our FA Cup tie away to Northwich Victoria on Saturday 24th October. The coach will depart from Chorlton Street in Manchester City Centre (next to the Britannia Hotel) at 12 noon, returning from Northwich at 5.15pm. The cost is £10 for adults, £5 for Under 16s. Sorry mates, still here. Was on a little holiday thru South Africa, NZ and Aussieland. I think we have quite a good run going and hope to see it continue. I attended the Aston victory, although I was so sauced up during the match, I had gotten confused because we had the alternate kits on and I was supporting the wrong team most of the match. I wish we would switch the 3rd kits to black. It is a lot classier look. I have been scouting new location for our new stadium and will post if anything comes up that is promising and in our price range.

On Sunday evening at Wembley, the Glazers' Buccaneers were hammered 35-7 by the New England Patriots in the NFL's annual excursion to these shores. Tampa Bay hardly provide a ringing endorsement of the Glazers' ownership qualities or their ability to provide the team with enough money to compete with the rest of the league. The defeat to the Patriots means they have now lost all seven of their matches this season, a distinction they share only with the St Louis Rams among the 32 NFL teams. A big reason for that is that the Glazers have spent less on players than any other owners in the NFL this season. They are a whopping £19million under the league's salary cap, a record low for the NFL, and £14million less than the average spend. Accounts also show that the Bucs are the league's lowest total spenders over the last four seasons since the Glazers began paying off interest on the huge loans they took out to buy United in 2005. The Glazers are now disliked in Florida almost as much as they are in Manchester. They have been accused of neglecting the Buccaneers in their efforts to meet the crippling repayments on the massive debt they took on to buy United.
