Marsh, 22, has been playing for UniBond premier bottom club Genesis but Rebels boss Karl Marginson put in seven days' notice on the striker last week and is now awaiting an answer from the player.
The St Helens-born player was a product of United's youth system, but almost had his career ended as a 17-year-old when he was the innocent victim of a car crash which saw team-mates Calum Flanagan and Mads Timm sent to a young offenders' institute.
Marsh recovered to become a right back in the reserves and made his only first-team appearance in a Carling Cup tie at Crewe in 2006.
After being released by United in 2007, he drifted to Blackpool - where he failed to play in the first team - and has since been in non-League.
This season he was at Northwich and Hyde before signing for Leigh, for whom he has scored three goals in nine games.
Marsh may be needed to replace top scorer Kyle Wilson, who faces a consultation tomorrow on a knee injury which could keep him out for up to six weeks.
The Rebels have already added to their firepower this week, bringing in 27-year-old Hyde front man Carl Lomax.
"He's a big, strong lad who can play with his back to goal but also has an eye for goal - he has scored against us in the past for Ramsbottom and Rossendale," says Marginson.
With skipper Dave Chadwick over a niggle, Marginson faces a tough decision for his centre back pairing as Leigh - without a win in ten games - visit Gigg.

I like to see former United players come to FCUoM it kind of gives them as second chance.
Second chance of what? One team is the World Champions and the other is non league team from Bury.
The performance against Leigh by FC was awful by any standard, particularly on the defensive end. If you play like that, don't expect to acquire players like Marsh.
I think its unfair that they can cherry pick the league's best players.....it reminds me of another team
Oh dear Terry - another one who voices opinions but knows nothing about our club. In fact, we have one of the smallest budgets in our division and are one of the lowest payers. Fact. Last summer, we lost our star striker to Bradford P.A., as they offered to treble his wages. However, three of our lads actually turned down higher offers from elsewhere in order to remain at FC, as they love the club and particularly the fans. If this is your idea of "cherry-picking" then we are guilty as charged. Most players at our level would jump at the chance to play for us for the atmosphere alone. But never having seen an FC game, you wouldn't know about that, would you ? Like you know nowt about anything else about our club. Bet you've got an opinion though. People like you always do. Comes with the vivid imagination.
Too many people have uninformed opinions about FC Utd and quite a few are posted on here. It's par for the course i know, such as this latest one about us cherry picking players. Just how can that be when we have one of the smallest budgets for players in the current league we're in? In what manner could we possibly cherry pick players Terry? Please explain...if you can't back it up with facts then take your flippant comments and do one.
I know several directors/committee members of Unibond clubs via my work, and can confirm that FC United are disliked by the majority of clubs. This is mainly due to their attitude towards "smaller" clubs (as FC see them), thinking they are bigger than the Unibond, and their continuous mentioning of being linked to Manchester United. The attempted signing of Phil Marsh is not helping their reputation!
Vegas blue, you have really excelled yourself this time. You are just talking unmitigated rubbish. "Several directors/committee members" - just who are these people ? FC fans know (because we actually ATTEND games) that we regularly receive letters of appreciation from Chairmen etc of other clubs, usually following a visit from FC. These are reproduced in the programme, so are clearly not works of fiction. The most recent was from the Chairman of Witton Albion, following our recent visit.
Further, we do not have a problem with other clubs. I have travelled everywhere with FC from the beginning and have not had a problem with other fans thinking we have an "attitude". Some are understandably jealous of support which is unheard of at our level, but there is nothing we can do about that. That same massive support has brought much-needed funds to our opponents since 2005, and long may that continue. As for our "constantly mentioning" our link to Man United, I have been checking postings on here going well back and they are hardly mentioned at all. You just talk garbage, and anything you don't know about you will invent, but then you are one of the "born jealous brigade". I bet you are one of those who says "There are no reds in Manchester". Even though you come from Staly.
FC John, these are not my opinions, they are the opinions of others. I am not going to name these people, why should I? I presume that any letters received from Chairmen etc are thanking you for not vandalising their ground! As for not mentioning the Man United link, that's laughable, have you read the 1st comment on this page from Drifter Mancunia, for example?
Here you go then, Doubting Thomas. These are the comments from the Witton Chairman. See for yourself how much of a plank his words (not mine) make you look
Witton Albion’s acting chairman Mark Harris contacted the club to pass on his thanks to FC fans for their conduct at Saturday’s game.
Mark said: "I would like to offer my thanks and congratulations for the superb way in which your supporters conducted themselves at Witton on Saturday. Although we had no reason to expect FC fans to give us any problems, the sheer numbers provided plenty of challenges that - thankfully - we were able to meet. It would be churlish not to acknowledge that the financial support generated by playing your club is very welcome, however I just wanted to express my own best wishes for the overall experience yesterday provided, which was simply first-class.
"Having lost the match despite enjoying the best of the play would be, for many fans, a bitter pill to swallow. However, FC supporters conducted themselves impeccably and were a credit to their club, the league and semi-pro football."
"Our stewards reported not one incident of any nature and the whole day was everything our game should be about. There was passion in abundance, noise, rivalry commitment and controversy; however there was also friendship and camaraderie too."
"I wish you all the very best for the remainder of the season; I now feel a little less shamed of our dreadful showing at Gigg Lane earlier in the season! I hope that officials and all FCUM supporters received a warm and friendly welcome at Wincham Park, and would be delighted to extend the same hospitality to you at any time in the future."

Ever felt a complete fool ?
I stand by all of my comments!
It just goes to show you get bitters having a go at United fans at all levels. Love it! Up the Reds!
No problem in you standing by your comments Vegas bitter (which are of course complete nonsense). Now can you crawl back to your own Ciddy pages please? Surely you must be more interested in talking about how rich City are?
I stand by all of my comments!
Vegas-blue, Stalyvegas
Shame you can't produce a shred of evidence to back them up. But then you are commenting on something of which you have no knowledge or experience. You really are a sad case.
I assume Terry, who thinks he is a Mancunian means the Slum Dog Trillionaires from the Wastelands Swamp.
