ALTRINCHAM eased their FA Cup heartache by comfortably passing their Cambridge exam - but there was no joy for Cup giant-killers Droylsden and Curzon Ashton ahead of their big second-round ties.

Captain Robbie Lawton struck on the stroke of half-time to give Alty a well-deserved 1-0 home win over high-flying Cambridge which pushes them up to 11th in Blue Square Premier.

But Cup headline-makers Droylsden and Curzon were beaten, with the Bloods crashing out of the FA Trophy at Farsley Celtic and the Nash suffering a UniBond first division north promotion set-back in losing 1-0 at home to Bamber Bridge.

Alty's assistant-manager Graham Barrow said: "We're definitely taking a lead from Histon, who are proving that you don't necessarily have to be full-time to be successful in this division.

"We've brought in a lot of new players and now they are really starting to gel. Our form between now and Christmas will decide just how far this team can go."

Success

Droylsen boss Dave Pace rested six of the team who had covered themselves in glory by beating Darlington four days earlier.

But it was one of those who had shared in that success, stand-in skipper Jamie McGuire, who then let him down by being sent off for violent conduct with the tie at Farsley still scoreless.

The Bloods went on to lose 2-0, but, fortunately for them, McGuire will be available to face Chesterfield in the Cup this weekend as the automatic three-match ban he will now receive won't start for another week.

Elsewhere, Hyde United face a tricky Trophy replay at Hednesford tomorrow after being held 1-1 by the visiting UniBond premier leaders.

Stalybridge's third qualifying-round clash at Whitby was postponed due to snow and has been rearranged for Wednesday, while Warrington joined Droylsden in bowing out as they tumbled 1-0 to Nantwich.

Yesterday's FC United game against Boston United in the FA Trophy was postponed.
