Curzon boss warns Rebels

CURZON Ashton boss Gary Lowe has warned FC United that they have a big fight on their hands if they're to capture a third successive league title.

FC are back up to fifth in UniBond Division One North after Wednesday's 3-0 win over Clitheroe and will be seeking to make further headway when they entertain third-placed Bamber Bridge tomorrow.

But Curzon, who trail leaders Skelmersdale only on goal difference, boast a nine-point lead over the Rebels ahead of their home clash with Newcastle Blue Star, in which they'll be looking to post a third victory in eight days.

And, even though FC would go top were they to win the games in hand they have on Curzon and the rest of the teams above them, Lowe believes that's asking a lot of Karl Marginson's men given the fixture glut they now face.

Lowe, whose team tried and failed to catch the Rebels when the roles were reversed in the North West Counties League last term, said: "FC United are a good side, but it's nevertheless going to be tough for them playing catch-up at this stage of the season.

"We know from experience how hard that is and, with respect to the North West Counties, it's a lot more difficult stringing wins together in this division, as FC United are now faced with doing, than it is in that league."

Absent

Curzon's on-loan ex-Hyde striker Steve Foster will again be absent tomorrow as he serves out a three-match ban, meaning he'll be available for the crunch trip to FC United next Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Altrincham continue their fight for Blue Square Premier survival when they return to Devon to meet high- flying Exeter just four days after snatching a valuable draw at second-placed Torquay.

Bottom club Droylsden, away to Salisbury, appear virtually certain to be heading straight back to Blue Square North.

Immediately above the Bloods but five points better off, are Northwich, whose home clash with Ebbsfleet offers them a realistic opportunity to cling on to the relegation lifeline they secured by winning last time out at Woking.

Tameside neighbours Stalybridge and Hyde resume their private Blue Square North promotion battle with Bridge, fifth, away to Blyth and the Tigers, sixth, at home to Hucknall.

Leigh, six points adrift at the foot of the table, already have the look of a relegated side as they prepare to meet Barrow.

I think Gary Lowe is right. We have had that many matches called off through inclement weather this season that we will be playing Wednesday Saturday every week until April and that's if no more games are called off. We have now been reinstated in the Presidents cup to be played against Goole next weekend and the away match against Bradford PA, another promotion hopeful, will be on a Monday night on the 7th April two days after Wakefield at home and two days before Harrogate away. It’s a tall order but I’m sure the Margy and the team will give it their all as we get right behind them. If we make the playoffs then I would see that a result as result and in the playoffs we are as good as the rest of the best in this division.
