Rebel Reds swoop for Colin Bell

FC UNITED'S new signing will face some good-natured stick if he makes his debut at Clitheroe tonight - he is called Colin Bell!

The newcomer is not the 61-year-old City legend, but a 24-year-old former Rochdale trainee who has also played for Bury and Chester reserves, and for TNS and Carmarthen Town in the League of Wales.

The utility player is likely to start on the bench in tonight's rearranged game at Clitheroe, a fixture abandoned last month when the floodlights failed with the score 1-1.

FC are awaiting international clearance for former Rochdale trainee Bell, and are also hanging on for the go-ahead from the Welsh FA to hand former Manchester United reserves top scorer Aaron Burns his debut.

"Colin a is a great communicator, something we have lacked a bit this season, and he can play right back, central defence or central midfield," said FC boss Karl Marginson.

"He did say to me: `I am going to get some stick for my name, aren't I?' And I told him he definitely will! But he's the type of lad who will thrive on it."

The new boy may be needed sooner than Marginson planned, as skipper Dave Chadwick needs a scan on possible knee ligament damage.

Although I'm a city fan, must wish you all the best FC United, it's fantastic to see grassroots, passionate football without financial interests still exists!

When I first saw just the headline I thought the 60 year-old Colin Bell had strapped the boots back on for F.C. United, then I thought no, he must be MANAGING F.C. United.

My first thought isn't as deranged as it sounds as I'm pretty sure a 50-something year old Socrates recently saddled up for Garforth Town, with Brazillian flags being waved in the crowd and so on!

Can't believe F.C. United would sign someone with that name, and Aaron Burns? What on earth is he doing down there playing at that rubbish level? Can't believe either of these 2 things!

I understand now, I just read on another F.C. story that due to a pretty ridiculous F.A. ruling, Burns actually isn't allowed to play above Unibond League level until the transfer window re-opens in Jan after being ditched by Cardiff in favour of Fowler and Hasselbaink.

Well, if he has to play at this level then he's at the right club, but that rule's ridiculous though.

He's only 20 and let's hope he goes onwards and upwards from here, although I hope that F.C. to go onwards and upwards too and I just wanna say that if F.C. ever make it to the Premier League, I will prefer them over the current title-holding Manchester United as I would see F.C. as the truer United.

And this is coming from one of Manchester United's most fanatical supporters in the world as well, I'm always one of the guys frequently commenting on United stories and I suppose you were once the same Free Red?

There was a delay in getting International Clearance from The FA for Saturdays match so Aaron Burns was left on the bench, but he is now registered as an FC United player and last night bagged 2 in a 0-3 demolition of Clitheroe. Got himself two songs already "Burnsy boy, Burnsy boy, he scores goals like McIlroy with a nik nak paddy wack..etc and another adapted from an old Andy Cole classic. You should have seen his face, beaming from ear to ear he was. Oh, and we've started a song for Colin Bell as well "U-N-I-T-E-D, Colin Bell plays for FC with a nick nak paddy wack..etc. I tell ya Clitherroe was rockin' last night! Viva la revolution, come on FC.

Wunderkid. I still comment on United stories especially when I read anything that is blatantly inaccurate, like the myth glazer spent £50-£70m on players last closed season when after selling players on and taking out HP terms on new transfers it was more like £5m. But I generally read more than I write.

When is the signing of this one kid from Bolton named Wayne Wrongy?? I guess they can have the same or similar names, but their game is no where near the same. Sounds appropriate for this pub club disguised as the soul of Manchester. (only with V-neck line kits!)

Dash, you got it wrong, its Wayne Wrighty, not Wrongy, and he'd from Burnley not Bolton!! they call me Daft because i'm daft ha ha.

everything seems to be back on track. it's amazing what a win or two does.Droylsden should be a real humdinger, good atmosphere too.hope there no idiots on show, ive been to matches at Curzon when fc have played there and no problems.fc have a real chance at Droylsden(theres the kiss of death)as they are really struggling, dont think Paceys a manager at this level(my mates knows him quite well,he's well known in Gorton).i think it's all the makings of a cracking non-league tie and it will show the true potential that fc really have if they can put up a good performance.

Have to disagree with Free Red's description of it "rocking in Clitheroe"... went along and was most disappointed.

There was at least a five minute spell in the game when those cheeky chaps behind the goals weren't singing songs about the Bitters! It's not good enough. We need the full 90 minute blast at the Bitters rather than giving them a 5 minute respite. Blimmin' rubbish.

But I did love to see that bloke that brings the flags. He got out his bag and stuck up about 4 flags behind the goal. Can't someone else have their turn next game? He looked as if he was struggling to carry them all.

Oh, but congratulations to the manager and chairman for finally turning the season around. I feared the worst before the Clitheroe game but now I'm much happier. And congrats to the 400 loyalists who turned out. Mind you, what happened to the other 7,000 when we were winning regularly?

Early days I suppose...

SoulboyFTR. Singing started before the match and other than a break at half time, didn't stop until after the team left the pitch on the final whistle. So with extra time, it was closer to 100 minutes singing and chanting with up to four songs going at one time. As for the FC team, as one Clitheroe fan remarked, "it's like watching Brazil".

Why is it some of you bitters still moan when you win. Isn't beating Birmingham and challenging for a Champs league spot good enough. Get a life, you're as sad as Tommy Tampa.

This weekends results Congleton Res. 1-3 FC United Res.
Daisy Hill U18's 1-4 FC United U18's.

I noticed that the MEN has changed the tab on the left to read "FC UNITED/Non-league". Does that mean they are going to start writing stories about the other glorious clubs in the NW counties league and the Unibond??

NEIL "GIVE THESE LOSERS A GOOD LESSON IN FOOTBALL TONIGHT"

That's a bit rich coming from one of the Conference relegation favourites. 5 POINTS! (lol) Enjoy it whilst you can because mark my words well meet you again in the Conference North in a few years. That's where you will be next season. LOSERS

That team of 'losers' battered Droylsden 2-3 last night and the score line flatters Droylsden who were awful. I swear we have played better teams in the NWCFL and that's no exaggeration. Dave Pace must have been gob smacked. After we scored our first the Droylsden players heads went down and from that point they showed no commitment, displayed no passion and were no match for FC. I know Pace played a select XI but then again with Rudd, Taylor and Howard out so did FC. We did have Aaron Burns of course whos 25 yard goal was fit for the Prem, but even so we are still 3 divisions lower. See you again on your way back down.
