Wes eyes Euro spot

WES Brown is hopeful that his return to top form won't have come too late to earn him a place in England's squad for Euro 2004.

The Manchester United defender was superb against Arsenal on Saturday for the second game in succession, even winning praise from Gunners forward Thierry Henry.

And despite making his last England appeance in the 3-1 defeat to Australia last February, Brown is hopeful that he can make the plane to Portugal to cap a great end of season.

"I'm trying not to think about Euro 2004 but, of course, to be picked would be great for me," he said.

"I'm aware that two good games do not get you there but I'm going to work as hard as I can and see what happens.

"To win an FA Cup final and then go to Portugal this summer would be great for me. It would definitely cap my season."

Realistically, Brown will struggle to make the squad as Sven Goran Eriksson is likely to choose John Terry, Sol Campbell, Jonathan Woodgate and Gareth Southgate as his centre backs, but the Manchester United man's team-mate Mikael Silvestre believes Brown should go.

"When you look at all the defenders in the English game, then Wes would be the one who has to go to the European finals," he said.

"I'm very confident that he will go. It was never going to be easy for him to come back from that knee injury but he's young and he's now back to his best."

Should Wes go to Euro 2004? Have your say.

He deserves to go. The lad has worked really hard. From a Utd fan's point of view, it was awful seeing him suffer in the thick of it! Now he's back to his best and hopefully it will stay that way, and if so then he deserves Rio's shirt for Euro 04. Afterall he is a big game player. He was outstanding against Porto and both games against Arsenal. A pretty cool customer if you ask me!

manu fans take a step back im a red and there every week paying my money. 1st off a great performance on saturday very proud of the lads and us lot in the crowd 1700 down on the gunners and we roasted them in the stand. BUT lets not lose sight of the seasons failings one good game for Fletch and the others doesnt make up for what haas gone before all i hope is the board and fergie remember to rebuild and not say well we won the cup these players just need time. we are still a shadow of our former selves and at least 5-6 of the current squad should have new homes in the summer united possibly need 8 players to come in and really make a difference 2 defenders 2-3 midfielders at least one established!!! 2 strikers and may be one goalkeeper

If any of you are interested, there was a bloke in the boozer last night selling 350 gallons of Brasso, apparently it would be very good for your necks.

This always gets me going. As soon as one of our players gets a couple of good games behind them all of a sudden they want to play for england.Sorry in my eyes england represents the anti-United FA and no United play should grace the field in their shirt.Oh well done for putting 2 players soon to be off loaded neville and butt in their place concerning england.

I can't believe Bill (from Longsight) would be shortsighted enough (sorry Bill...couldn't resist) to think Wes Brown is "not an England player in any way shape or form". What are you talking about? He IS an England player! He's just been injured for God knows how long, that's all. Using the reverse logic you applied, he had a few bad games and now he sucks...is that right? I don't think so! The problem for the boy is that he was thrown back into the fray far too prematurely because of the arrogance and stupidity of Rio Ferdinand. You're right that a few Man United fans were calling for his head but just because a bunch of over-zealous jug-heads think he's ****, it doesn't mean he is. Experience and confidence are huge factors at this level and to have to step in and take over from where Rio Ferdinand left off is a tall order for anyone....let alone a young kid who's career has been blighted with more injuries than you or I can shake a stick at. Hey!! you could be right....two outstanding games doesn't make him an England player (even if he did shut down Henry....music to my ears)....but how about if he does it in the next game and then the game after that?? If he can continue with this outstanding progress, my guess is that he is in with a good shout for making the trip to Portugal. Besides...I'm not sure Gareth Southgate is that good

I hate it when any Utd players play for there country. Why the heck did we sign DD when he has played for Cameroon all season.

Any Utd player that puts country before club should be shown the door.

I hope Wes never plays for England.

wes is coming back to match fitness after a horrific injury...hence the improvement in his play.it takes games. if he is picked for euro 2004, it will be based on his performances in the run up to the end of the season. i for one think that southgate is past it. give wes a chance as rio's replacement? yes.

It will be interesting to see how he finishes the season but I think Terry will get the nod. Sven believes in incumbents, not whose in form. Ask the young lad at Southhampton if he agrees with me. Alan Smith is also playing extremely well right now and has gone way up in my estimation.

I am pleased to see Wes coming back to form. He has come back from a second cruciate in the second half of the season but I can't help fearing for him because he is so unlucky with injuries.

From a personal point of view of course he will want to represent his country but from (my) selfish view I simply don't want him to go! I'd like to see him get a proper rest in the summer and be fighting fit for US for pre-season. We already have Rio banned until a month into the start of next season. It worries me that if he gets called up for Euro 2004 with his bad luck with injuries we will lose him again and be 2 defenders down for the start of the 2004/5 season. Anyway I don't see why we should do the bloody FA any favours, especially in light of them trying to get Rio's ban increased !

Just shows how bad the England side is if they're even thinkin about calling this poor player up. Two games playing alright and he thinks he's Maldini haha!

Neil Allen - we have so many clowns on this site because, try as we may, we cannot keep fools like you from the site.

As per usual I have to explain myself to a red.....Duncan I meant in your team there are a lot of clowns....this is like nursery school and teaching a bunch of 3-4 year old babies.
