Fine for Campbell

SOL Campbell has escaped a ban for his kick at Manchester United's Eric Djemba-Djemba in the FA Community Shield.

The Arsenal and England defender has been fined £20,000 for the retaliatory backheel at the Cameroon international in August's match at the Millennium Stadium.

Many expected a three-match suspension to be the punishment but it appears that the player escaped a ban because of the degree of violence deemed involved in his flick at Djemba-Djemba.

The incident was not picked up by referee Steve Bennett during the game but included in his official match report after he saw it on a video recording.

The disciplinary committee today amended the charge to one of improper behaviour under their Rule E1.

The original charge was one of violent conduct under Rule E2.

Campbell accepted his guilt and presented mitigation to the commission, who decided the Arsenal defender should be warned as to his future conduct as well as imposing the fine.

Last season he lashes out at Ole with his arm and gets a ban, this season he goes one better and kicks out at EDD and it's 20 grand down the pan, some punishment that is. Of course he's an Arsenal player and, according to Whinger, they are all little angels.
Sweet FA!! nice one.

Along with the "consistency" of refereeing standards i suppose the treatment of Sol Cambell along with the household name from the bitters we have a model of consistency of approach from the sports governing body. Never mind i suppose nobody can now seriously argue that United get preferential treatment anymore.

How does this penalise Sol. Arsenal will pay the fine but even if Sol had to pay, it is just peanuts to these guys.

It would seem that the FA are having a bad week. It would also seem that they have backed down to avoid confrontation with Arsenal as SC. The FA charged Campbell on the basis of what the referee put in his end of match report and also by what they reviewed on Video. Now it seems to me that if you see someone bash an old lady over the head on video, then there can be no doubt that that person did it. SO how did the FA arrive at the conculsion that it was just ungentlemanly. Although to be fair the kick out was not major, the underlying fact is that he meant to do it. Following his elbow (Ole's fault of course) on OGS last season I would have expected him to be banned. However the FA have taken the soft option. It will be with interest to watch how the Highbury 6 get on with their hearings. No doubt they will all receive accolades for congratulating RVN on his performance in the OT clash. Shame on you the FA.

One other little point interesting to see Harry R get a two game touch line suspension for verbal - was his offence worse. Maybe he hurt the 4th officials feelings - aaaarrrgggggg

What a waste of time. I dont know why the FA bother. Just let the players have a free for all on the pitch, and save the disciplinary action for the really serious offences, like forgetting to take a drug test but passing it 36 hours later.

Jericho, it gets even better - apparently Rio called the FA a mere 2 hours after the appointment, when he realised what he had done, asking to meet up, there and then, to do the test. But the FA officials were having none of it.
I agree, waste of space. Have they heard of common sense/taking situations on merit - oh yeah, of course they have, Negouai only got a 2K fine!

Gibbon- and when you think of what was supposed to have happened at a London hotel recently, and that the FA havent said a word or taken any action, it really makes you wonder where their priorities lie.
