The United manager faces a fine and the possibility of a touchline ban as punishment for comments he is alleged to have made to fourth official Jeff Winter during last Saturday’s 2-1 win at Newcastle.
Ferguson reacted furiously to referee Uriah Rennie’s failure to send Andy O’Brien off for a professional foul on Ryan Giggs and, after kicking the ball away, was seen in animated conversation with Winter.
Scholes operation
The Reds boss has 14 days to respond to the charge, and is likely to request a personal hearing.
However the FA might be less than sympathetic as by then they will already have had to deal with the likely withdrawal of Paul Scholes from the England squad for the Euro 2004 qualifiers against Macedonia and Liechtenstein.
Ferguson has claimed that the midfielder needs a hernia operation and the player is likely to have surgery next week.
That would rule him out of the clash with Arsenal on September 21, but the rest of United’s fixtures are far less daunting and Ferguson will see the absence as an acceptable risk.
England, though, might not as Scholes is unlikely to have fully recovered by October 11 when England face a trip to Istanbul to face Turkey for a match that could determine who qualifies for Euro 2004.
What punishment, if any, should the FA give Fergie? Have your say.

Most English football supporters are fed up with Ferguson attempt to control the outcome of football matches.
Taggart should not be allowed to dictate to or dominate officials in order to gain advantage for his team as he appears to have done so in the past and seems to continue to do so. He should be prevented from any close contact with match officials for evermore.
