The Reds have lost the last two meetings 1-0, both times to Kevin Nolan strikes and they will be desperate to pick up the win this time as they look to get their campaign to retain the title off to the perfect start.
A week later, United will travel to St James’ Park to face Newcastle, hoping for a repeat of last season’s 6-2 thrashing.
Arsenal are likely to be the main challengers for the title again and they visit Old Trafford on September 20, while United will visit Highbury on March 27.
But the fixtures all Reds will be awaiting are the derbies. United will hope December 13 proves unlucky for the Blues when Kevin Keegan’s side visit Old Trafford. The Reds then get their first trip to the Eastlands Stadium on March 13.
Liverpool will host United on November 8, with the return on April 24 preceding the run-in with fixtures away at Blackburn, home to Chelsea and a final day match at Villa Park.
