Manchester United

Ronaldo focusing on football

CRISTIANO Ronaldo admits his future is unclear but the Manchester United winger insists speculation will not affect his excellent form this season.

The Portugal international, who played in his country's 2-0 win over Brazil at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium last night, has been repeatedly linked with a move to Barcelona or Real Madrid since the World Cup last summer.

Barca sporting director Txiki Begiristain was reportedly at the game in north London to watch the winger but Ronaldo, 22, said: "For the moment, I'm only thinking about training well every day.

"I don't know where I will be in the space of the next six months.

"The only thing I am sure about is I want to continue at the level I've reached and aim to improve even more."

Well its not exactly the ringing endorsement of his determination to stay at Man U that i'd have liked to have heard. He doesnt say he wants to leave so we shouldnt jump to conclusions, but its not much to expect him to say he'll still definitely be hear in 6 months time! I'd have been happier with a "No comment" than with what he said. If nothing else it will only encourage Barca and Real to step up their pursuit. With the exception of Larsson for obvious reasons i cant imagine one other player at the club coming out saying they weren't sure where they'd be in 6 months time.

Devestating as it is, he's gone.

These are alleged comments to "Spanish reporters". Just like the alleged comments he made in Spanish last summer saying he wanted to join Madrid, and we all know how that turned out. In the televised interview he only talked about his pride at being capatin, nothing about his future. This sounds like more pot-stirring by the Spanish press.

¿¿50 million should be the price. He is our best player at the moment. However, we only want players who are 100% committed to the cause. Let him go after comments like that.

It would be interesting to see what language he was quoted in. This is getting quite boring now, it is almost yearly that this is happening. Can we not just close ranks and get on with winning the league?

Hopefully he's just angling for the highest possible wage packet which the Glazers will have to stump up. Did anyone see him last night he was superb again. Frankly talk of players like Lennon replacing him is dismal though getting Lennon for 1M before Spurs would've been nice.

All quotes from the Spanish press. Tried-and-tested unsettling tactics.

If he does want to go, I'd love to see United take a stand and refuse to let him leave. If he didn't play football until the end of his contract (2010) this would effectively spell the end of his career. I think someone needs to take this stand to make greedy players, or more likely greedy agents, stop and think about the possible consequences. Won't happen, though, because the club would then lose his transfer fee. I really hope he's still with us next season, and that the "We won't sell at any price" noises being made by David Gill prove to be true.

No loyalty at all...after the club helped him become more than a one trick my little pony. Now he's an arrogant winking idiot. Still when a bigger club comes calling what can you do!

He's off! we all know this but refuse to admit it. He's off because the lure of Spain always attracted him. He's off cos he's developped into a world class player and eve United can't retain a player against his will. He's off cos Barça and Real won't want to lose him to each other. He's off cos for all the money United can offer to tie him down, the spanish football suits him. He's off cos the pressure he's having from his "agents" are very intense. He's off cos United are outstanding this season but can't guarantee European glory for him, Barça does. As a Unite fan, i must face this reality and to be fair, i'm bored to read or hear the same old storie, i said it a few days before : SELL HIM, and cash on him, cos Ronaldo despite all his recent displays is clearly not comitted to United. Accept it or not, but he's not like a Manchester lad, i can't see him plegding his future to OT like a player who grew up in the shadow of the Stretfford End. Pitty, but that's what i'm thinking about.

avoid distraction cos end of season is still a long way with a lot of games to play.when we get to the bridge we shall cross it . ronaldo is a significant player but i want to believe that no player is indispensable.if he wants to stay give him a good contract . if he is greedy and wants to leave why keep a player who is not committed, then keep him for one more season and sell to the highest bidder. but for now let us see his worth on the field of play.up united!

I think ronaldo is a top player and it would be sad if he left, but lets face it some time in the near future he is going to want to go to Barcelona or Madrid, his heart is set on it. I have been impressed with his form this season - but do u not think this is all to impress the watchers out there e.g. Barcelona and Madrid

We must be strong and face the truth. This lad has a mediteranian outlook, and judging by his colour everytime he comes back from a break, a love of sunbathing. HE wants to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona, that much is obvious, no matter how much United fans dont like it. The questions are, how long will he put up with Manchester and WHEN the time comes where we cant keep him anymore, how do we get TOP money for him? Of course a 3rd, and more pressing question is HOW ON EARTH DO WE REPLACE HIM WITHOUT BLUNTING OUR ATTACK? Ronnie WILL go either next summer, or the one after, that is a fact. I dont like it anymore than any other red, but its the truth and we must maximise our profits on the lad at the very least.

Tom, the lad can't win. He's playing out of his skin and you assume it's to impress Real or Barca. What do you want him to do, play badly? Not try? Let's enjoy him while we can.

The close season is a long way away. I'll believe it when see SAF looking worried. Like Mick Dublin has said before no player has ever left OT if SAF still wanted them in the team. But if he is set on leaving then we MUST ask for the maximum fee. That means no to 35 Million pounds (He's worth much more than 5 Million pounds more than Sheva!) Also do it early so it leaves enough time to buy a replacement. I have a feeling though that Ronnie will be around until the next World Cup.

wAS THIS BOY CORRECTLY QUOTED? What is wrong with him? We are poised to take the premiership and the last thing we want as fans is a player saying such things. Will he be committed to the cause?

if this is the case then united want to play hardball. If they want one of our best players then we want one of theirs in return. Eto / Ronaldinho / messi anyone?

get rid ! then there will be one less diver in the prem league..

Kevin, Blackpool, spot on mate! Tried and tested unsettling tactics! In fact the exact same unsettling tactics used in order to get Ferdinand, Saha, Rooney, Carrick and in the near future (allegedly) Hargreaves to sign for Utd. You have to understand its a two way thing, it can work against you just as well as for you when a bigger club comes hunting your players. Just as we lost SWP and will at some point lose Richards / Barton to the Chelseas, liverpools etc, Utd will lose to the Barceclonas / Real Madrids.

It's a little disconcerting how these comments are coming out again, sounds like the Spanish journo got it right when he said standby to see lots of false (if they are) statements appearing in the press until the end of the season.

According to todays papers he will move.Fergie cant let that happen.

Don't the media make you sick. They keep telling us that the Premiership is the best league in the world and here they are (MEN included) conspiring to drive the best young talent in the world out of it. What do they want, journeymen? You should be stirring your muck about Real, Barca, AC, Inter etc.

Most on here are being far too negative. Ok he wants to go to Spain, but not yet. He's 22 and has plenty of years before we will even contemplate it. C'mon never believe what the press say. Yesterday the Mirror reported Torres wants to join Arsenal ahead of United, and they put this down to him saying, the important thing about tonight is beating England, not playing at OT. It was also said Heinze's contract runs out at the end of the season.Tom, Manchester, I have never heard something so ridiculous before. Obviously you have never played football. Of course he is playing the best football of his life to impress. To impress the team, fans, his family andmore importantly himself. Do you really believe if Real and Barca released a joint statement saying they will not go in for Ronaldo, do you really think he will start playing like he was in first season, or being 22, do you not think he had potential when we bought him and beginning to fulfil it? I know which one makes ALOT more sense!

The crucial difference between United and City, which is overlooked by Windy Miller, is that City have always been a selling club, United have NEVER had to sell a player they wanted to hold onto. As for these "quotes", I've made the point on another thread (but my comments have been lost in the ether) that there's no point getting over-excited about alleged quotes circulated by Spanish hacks in the exact same week that comments alleged to have been made by Scolari about why Ronnie needs to join Barca (again, sourced from the Spanish media, surprise, surprise) were exposed as 100% fabricated by both Ronaldo and Scolari himself.
