UNITED will look to put the slip-up against FC Copenhagen behind
them when they travel to Celtic in the Champions League. Here is a
look at the two sides ahead of the clash at Parkhead. FORM Celtic
have taken advantage of the crises afflicting main domestic rivals
Rangers and Hearts to cruise to a 15-point lead in the Bank of
Scotland Premier League after the same number of games. They have
been less consistent in Europe, where two home wins against FC
Copenhagen and Benfica have been countered by a pair of away
defeats to leave the Bhoys second in the group. Manchester United's
serene progress to the knockout stages, which began with three
straight wins, was shattered by a shock defeat at FC Copenhagen
last time out when a weakened team struggled badly. Despite that, a
point in Scotland would send the Red Devils though. PEDIGREE Celtic
famously crashed out of the Champions League in the qualifying
rounds last year after a humiliating 5-0 defeat in Bratislava
against Artmedia proved too much to pull back. The greatest moment
in the club's history remains the European Cup final of 1967, when
the Lisbon Lions defeated Internazionale to become the first
British winners of the trophy, in what remains their sole
continental triumph. Manchester United, inspired by George Best and
Bobby Charlton, won the same competition a year later when they saw
off Eusebio's Benfica at Wembley and also clinched the rebranded
Champions League in 1999 with a last-gasp win over Bayern Munich.
Last year's campaign ended in ignominy when they finished bottom of
their group to crash out at the first hurdle. MANAGERS Gordon
Strachan recovered from the defeat to Artmedia to lead Celtic to
the Bank of Scotland Premier League title last season and his job
is secure with the Hoops odds-on to repeat the feat this time
around. A win over United could take his side to the knock-out
stages and would be seen as a major feather in his cap. Sir Alex
Ferguson has silenced critics who have called for his resignation
in recent seasons to lead United to the top of the Barclays
Premiership with a side featuring some of the world's best young
talent. After years of continental underachievement since their
triumph seven years ago, the Scot is desperate to make amends this
year.
