Trio out for Copenhagen clash

RYAN Giggs, Louis Saha and skipper Gary Neville have been ruled out of Manchester United's Champions League trip to FC Copenhagen.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the trio would miss the match as the Red Devils flew out to the Danish capital, adding that Neville would also miss Saturday's Premiership game with Portsmouth after suffering a recurrence of a calf problem which has plagued him for much of the season so far.

Giggs could also miss Saturday's match at Old Trafford after reporting a hamstring injury, while Saha has been ruled out of United's latest European adventure with a knee problem.
There was some good news for Ferguson, with full-back Patrice Evra reporting fit despite limping out of the weekend win over Bolton with an ankle injury.

However, the triple injury blow did mean the introduction of teenage defender Kieran Lee, scorer of the extra-time Carling Cup winner against Crewe last week, for his first European trip.

éWe had a tough game at Bolton on Saturday and we have another Saturday match this week, which doesnét make it any easier for us in terms of the injury situation,é said Ferguson.

éBut we do have players like Wes Brown and Gabriel Heinze to come in so things are not so bad.é

United only need a point to seal their passage into the knockout phase, and are full of confidence after recording seven straight wins in all competitions.

éI am delighted with the form of the team,é said Ferguson.

éWe want to make sure we qualify tomorrow. That is a priority for us.é

Manchester United (from): Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Brown, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Heinze, Silvestre, Lee, Ronaldo, Scholes, Carrick, OéShea, Fletcher, Jones, Richardson, Rooney, Smith, Solskjaer.

It shouldn't be a factor against the Danes but losing the likes of Giggs and Saha is a real worry given the limitations of our squad. Saturday's performance was amazing but it doesn't hide the lack of quality beyond our first-choice eleven. We failed to strengthen in the summer and I'm afraid that is likely to cost us any chance of silverware this season.

4-0 TO UNITED.The Danes didn't look too strong at OT.Kieran Lee deserves to be involved. He showed a definite desire to win v.Crewe and won it thru the kind of manic desire which UNITED need when the chips are down.

Oh dear, what's up with Gaz? It seems like he's been constantly injured for months now. If Wes can reclaim his form from last season then we've got decent cover. But any more displays like he put in against Crewe and we're in trouble. Smith was also atrocious in that game, while Ole was excellent so it's a no-brainer to me for who starts on Wednesday alongside Roo. Smudger can come on from the bench but needs to show a lot more at reserve level before we even think about starting him for the first-team. I really really don't like the sound of Saha with a knee injury, if he reverts back to Mr Glass we suddenly look very light up front and, IMO, we should recall Rossi (does anyone know if we can do that?)

yes i agree robbo, especially in the form giggs is in we could do we him against pompey. at least solskjaer is looking sharp and it means smith may get a bit more game time which he really needs. does this mean rooney for captain again? more than likely rio.

Not happy with Gaz's continued niggling injuries. United need a fully fit Nev for the big games and this start two games out for the next two is becoming a concern.

You are all right guys. The biggest lost is the one of Giggs who has been in exceptional; form since the start of the year. We really needs to sign Nani and Hargreaves in January and bring back Rossi if Smith does not show signs of big improvement.

I think we rather expect these sort of injuries with Giggs and Saha, unfortunately, but GN is missing too many games for my liking. I suppose Brown and O'Shea are considered adequate cover at right-back, but how is Bardsley doing at Rangers?

Some of the comments on here are true. We do have an issue in the depth of our quality. That said - all teams do. Look at Chelsea - they only have Shevvy and Drogba of any note up front. Personally I'd like to see Hienze keep his place at LB, with Evra pushed to LM. A straight swap with Wes for Gary (although, long-term, this area is a concern) and Ole in for Saha. I'm hoping that this is just a case of SAF resting his injury-prone players to ensure that they are not at risk of further injuries. It would seem that way.

These injuries are definitely a concern, especially those to Giggs and Saha for who we don't really have any like for like cover. Either Wes or O'Shea will come in for Nev which shouldn't weaken the back four but I would imagine it will be Fletcher in for Giggs which could go either way depending on which Fletcher turns up on the night. Come the summer we really need to find another quality left winger as cover for Giggs because bar Ronaldo we do look light on the left flank - Park is so right footed that we lose a lot of our balance when he plays down the left IMO.

Fletcher in for Giggs, with Ronaldo playing on the left. Ole for Saha, Wes for Gaz. Should still be strong enough to get the required result. I wonder whether these are all in fact minor niggles that would be played through if we were not in such a strong position in the group. The injuries mean SAF can claim to be playing his strongest available team and thus taking the game seriously. I guess if Giggs and Saha are fit at the weekend, we'll know the answer. Mick, according to the rules, Rossi cannot be recalled before January.

Here we go again? What's wrong with these three. I am getting fed-up with Gary's calf, Saha's knee and Giggsys hamstring. Gaz and Giggs should then be playing their last season and in which case I am hoping that Nani and Bardsley on loan are ready to come on. As for Saha, Torres should be bought in the summer. Just when we are beginning to put together a run of good form these three come with their head, shoulder knees and toes. They make me sick. I mean I dont understand it. They played 90 minutes on Saturday and walked off the pitch not on crutches and then bam! they are injured. Its like they pick injuries taking tea. This is crazy and I can only imagine it is SAF trying to rest injury prone players but it is certainly not good for the team if we have them fit for 2 in 5 games. November is a very difficult month for us with very tough fixtures coming up and all players must take good care of themselves. Gary, Giggs and Saha all I can say is that you guys are so disappointing. Evra was stretchered off and yet he is back fit.... shame on you three!

Oh no, here we go. I only mentioned on another thread his morning about injuries. If we get over this next couple of weeks it'll only happen again and probably again. Typical. Just when we finally seemed to be getting somewhere with our style of play etc . The summer 'activity' as i've said before will cost us ultimately and that's hard to take !!

It sounds like saha and giggs are out because we are being cautious with them which you can understand with there injury history, the neville one is a bit more disturbing as this is the same problem that has plagued him since last season. i have a funny feeling he might have to bite the bullet and go for an operation on it at some point , i hope wes gets the nod over o'shea but i don't expect him to while surely it will be ole in for saha up top and probably fletcher in for giggs although richardson or evra could cover the left midfield if you want to keep balance. mick, i think you will find premiership rules mean we can't call Rossi back untill january.

Im not liking what im reading. It will be ok for tomorrow, but how bad is it??? Brown, Fletch and Ole in

Felix, Nairobi - you talk rubbish. Shame on them? You should be ashamed of your self for making such comments.

I suspect it is precautionary and I expect Giggs and Saha to be back on Saturday and Neville as well. Rossi will certainly come back in January although we cannot recall him before that. People keep talking about signing a player as back up to Giggs but sadly they don't grow on trees. Pedersen at Blackburn should be considered but he will cost upwards of 8m now. That would give Steve plenty of ammo to have yet another pop at our scouts - we should have signed him a year ago for 1.5m blah blah. Sadly he would never have developed at Utd because he would have only played a handful of games in the first team and would never have had a proper run of games. At Blackburn he is one of the first names on the team sheet.

The way we've been playing lately we MUST stick with the same system!! Hence, imo this is the perfect opportunity to try Evra left side with Gab behind him. There's no point kidding ourselves, Richardson isn't good enough. This'll keep the balance and allow Ronaldo to stay on the right. DO NOT play Rooney on his own (even if it means Choccy getting his boots on!!) as he finally looks happy.... he isn't a wide player ! We laugh at England and the dippers for not playing the best players in their best positions !!

Why did Bardsley go?

Report This Reply

Mick Dublin, sorry mate Premiership/FA rules dictate once another club signs a player on loan he effectively becomes their player for the duration of the loan agreement. He cannot be recalled until the loan period is complete. Even if this means we are thin on the ground or if he is simply warming the bench at Newcastle. Effecive until the loan deal is complete. Gutted.

I heard that Neville is fit he's just fully booked for halloween.

I think Fergie has changed his mind and has opted for a weaker side against the Danes.
O'Shea at right back and Fletcher right mid field should not hurt us too badly.
Also he may give Smith a run just behind Rooney with the option to bring on Ole either wide right or up front.
If we get in front by a couple of goals;we should give Lee a run. We are not long on top quality so players like Scholes will have to start getting rests this is why we need (IMO) Hargreaves, Lennon and Huntelaar in January with Sly and Smudger moving on.

whats the panic - SAF has decided to rest the three of them, and out of respect to Copenhagen claims they have injuries. I expect a tough match, last chance fro Copenhagen and they will have a go at it, but we should be strong enough to cope. Come on you Reds

Gorton Blue - That was quite funny! Great win last night. The quality of your football was reminiscent on the football Utd played on Saturday. Well done mate!

Cheers for the answers folks, tis as I feared. Hopefully Roeder will see the light and start giving Rossi some games over the next couple of months - we might need him in the latter half of the season. Agree totally with colin from canada's in/outs but I can only see us signing one player in January and that's Hargreaves. Huntelaar and Lennon will both wait until the summer before deciding on their future. Lennon, in particular, would be a sensational signing but will be even harder to pry away from Spurs than Carrick. Those three would definitely be the missing pieces in the jigsaw, mind you, and Smudger/Silv are the obvious candidates to make way.
