UNITED'S interest in this season's Lancashire Senior Cup was extinguished when they were dumped out by Bolton Wanderers in the first round at a windswept County Ground, Leyland last night.

Wanderers skipper Matt Cassidy scored the winner in the 28th minute with a low drive past United keeper Tom Heaton.

United's young side battled well in search of the equaliser but their serious attempts on goal were restricted to a couple of long-range shots from Phil Marsh which both flew high over the bar.

Scott Jamieson very nearly grabbed a second goal for the home side in the 71st minute, but his curling free-kick just failed to get past Heaton.

The Reds pressed in the closing stages, with both Ryan Shawcross and captain Danny Rose going near to grabbing the leveller.

But they just couldn't break down a determined Bolton defence despite all their frantic eforts. Tweet
