The 24-year-old Polish international impressed Sir Alex Ferguson when he appeared as a sub at Old Trafford in May 2005 and then secured the No1 position at the Hawthorns.
Old Trafford keeper coach Tony Coton has been keeping tabs on the Pole, who signed for West Brom from Hertha Berlin in 2004, and has given the green light for United to snap up Kuszczak.
WBA boss Bryan Robson has confirmed United's interest and the two clubs are now thrashing out a price for the player.
Kuszczak is away on holiday having been excused Albion's early pre-season work as he's been on World Cup duty in Germany.
Kuszczak will fill the void between United's experienced No1 Edwin van der Sar and impressive young prodigy Ben Foster now that Tim Howard has gone on loan to Everton.
Stoke
Foster was on loan at Watford all term having been signed from Stoke City last summer. He helped the Hornets win promotion to the Premiership via the play-offs.
Another loan spell, possibly back at Vicarage Road, could be on the cards to stock up on experience.
Van der Sar is out of contract next summer, though a new deal could be forthcoming for the 35-year-old, but Kuszczak could stake a claim says European Cup hero Alex Stepney.
"You just never know how things pan out and Tomasz has to say to himself here is a fantastic opportunity," says Stepney.
"On the face of it you wonder if United have decided that maybe Foster is better served at the moment gaining more experience somewhere else rather than sitting on the bench being understudy to Edwin.
"Edwin's a fit lad and doesn't look like being dislodged but he's 36 next season and you never know. Foster could go back to Watford and play in the Premiership and what an experience that is to have on your CV and come back to Old Trafford with. It's a great apprenticeship.
Howard
"What's going to happen to Tim Howard at Everton? Will he come back or get a permanent move there. We don't know but I would guess Foster might be being groomed for the first choice role in two or three years.
"So where does that leave Kuszczak? It would appear he's got the chance to be No2 for at least a year and stake his claim.
"United will have done their homework and they wouldn't give the opportunity to someone they didn't think was up to it.
"Obviously Robbo rated him highly because he came in for the injured Chris Kirkland at Albion and then kept him out completely.
"I have not seen a lot of him but there has to be something there for United and Robbo to like him."
Meanwhile, Ruud van Nistelrooy is awaiting news from his agent over talks this week with the Reds. The Dutchman is wanted by Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
Cristiano Ronaldo is also on his post-World Cup break contemplating his future having announced his desire to move to Real Madrid.

Who gives a toss. Typical Fergie, he buys a goalkeeper. Fergie out now before he does any more damage.
Wey hey - a signing at last. Who is he by the way?
I know Kuszczak played some good games last season, but I have unfortunately not seen enough of him to be enitirely convinced. I would like to see some more amibition at Old Trafford, and I am of course thinking firstly of Buffon, but also Casillas. With talks of Buffon going to Real should Juventus be relegated, Casillas would certainly not settle for a place on the bench. To put it arrogantly; I would be content with signing either.
I totally fail to understand this, as not a Bosman back up keeper. Why loan out Howard and Foster, what about Steel?
No the Headline is printed wrong. They meant to say....UNITED ARE NAILING DOWN THE HATCHES.. Not nailing down a deal. HA HA HA HA HA because by the time scotch egg as finished HACKING your team down to size thats exactly what your gonna have to do... I cannot wait for next season.. YEEEEEEEEARRRRRRRRR LOSERS
great, we have loads of goalkeepers - but WHAT ABOUT THE MIDFIELD!?
Yawn. Looks like VDS will be away after next season & Howard seen as not good enough. Otherwise why ditto Evra.
Bonus
i've lost the will to comment !
so our first signing - if it happens will be for a reserve keeper. Wow!! thats going get everyone excited!!! No need to worry about that total lack of a centre midfield - or ronaldo's move leaving us with one 32 year old wide man - oh and our top scorer leaving with no replacement insight. Maybe fergie is taking the liverpool approach of 2 years ago, play with a team that everyone thinks its rubbish and end up winning the european cup - well you've gotta hope theres some explanation behind this farce! Surely the club must have got a feeling that the fans are seriously worried about everything that seems...or should i say doesn't seem to be happening. Pleeeeeease by the end of the week can we sign a player to give everyone the club a boost (not gonna happen though is it)
For 3 million, I have no problem signing this lad as understudy to VdS and allowing Foster to enjoy a season with Watford in the PL. Between him, Foster and Howard, the goalkeeping position would be sorted out for many a year to come.
Another strange purchase from United - a West Brom reserve is hardly a great recommendation despite how well he may have performed against us. We've not exactly excelled in our goalkeeping recuits since the Great Dane. I agree that VDS is only a stop gap and perhaps Foster and Howard will excel at their respective loan clubs.
I know nothing of the player but just in terms of focus and man-hours, shouldn't the staff be dealing with more urgent issues?
are we trusting these same people who chose taibi, ricardo, howard, barthez, steele etc etc etc. lets face it we have made a lot of mistakes in trying to replace peter schmeichel if we get it wrong again will it cost somebody his job. in any other occupation constant failure to recruit the right personnel would have resulted in the sack
Yet another keeper. What about midfield ?
At 24 years old he cannot be that good otherwise he would be playing for a big name team. This signing is to distract from the fact that no real big signings are on the cards and I doubt there will be. Lets see where we are one month from now. If United have not signed any quality by then we will have no chance of winning the premiership. At least Runcorn has made it to the NWCFL.
I can't wait for next season, it's going to be proper Bo! All these quality signings! I just don't know how they decide which ones to buy what with the number of world class players desperate to play for us. Everywhere you turn there they are, O' Shea, Fletcher, Evra, it's no wonder they are getting rid of some of the dead wood, like Ruud, Heinze and Ronaldo. A bunch of talentless idiots the lot of them, bring back Nicky Butt that's what I say. Seriously though, what the feck is going on? Another goalie? Can he play the holding role as well, or are we just going to play 3 goalies next season and hope that just covers up the goal?
This really isn't funny though so I don't know why I am joking. I Know the situation with Real and the Italian league makes this a little more confusing, but surely SAF and the mighty Theatre of Dreams Corp can manouvre around that? It's like watching a kid trying to buy 50p worth of sweets with 10p and a bit of fluff they found in their pocket. DO SOMETHING!
Bring on Lippi, at least then we will have a manager top players will want to play for.
Its all well signing a keeper but what about midfielders thats what were lacking!!
What the hell is going on at United! Just recall Howard from Everton if we need cover for VDS. Why the hell do we need to spend 3 million on a keeper, when we really need other big signings. Mind you I really don't think we're going to sign anybody of any note this pre season. Even the rumours of players coming in have stopped. I think the journalists are sick of making up stories now. United are off to South Africa in the next couple of days, it doesn't look like anything will be done in the next few weeks then does it! How annoying!
They promised to strengthen the squad with some big signings, and then this. Great, another goalkeeper, that'll make a big difference. About as pointless as the signing of Evra.
SAF should save the ??3/4 mill and put it towards a truly world class deal all ManU fans are waiting for to prove that we are still a force to be reckoned with as lets face it nobody seems to want to play for us anymore.torres and mascherano would shut up a lot of people and would be enough.Ronnie has signed a deal if he does play no pay we must stand firm after caving to Chelsea on Mikel
Psycho Blue, assuming you are a Man City fan I bet you cannot wait. Having completed those shrewd transfer moves on Dickov and Hamaan (looking to the future no doubt) I am sure you look forward to finishing above us in the league as in previous years. Or have I got that wrong??
I am sure he will prove to be as great a signing as Taibi, Bosnich, Barthez, Goram, Carroll, Steele, Rachubka, Culkin, Howard, Foster and Ricardo. A team of goalkeepers there! Is there anyone at the club who has the slightest idea what is happening? I see now Ronaldo is being told he must stay. Great! A discontented player to go with a discontented support. Lippi has just resigned. GET HIM NOW!!!!!!!
United will call a press conference in the next couple of days and announce the signing of Tomas Kuzczak from WBA. SAF will announce that he is happy with the squad and it is good enough to challenge Chelsea all the way. I bet ya that is what is going to happen. I really hope not, but i bet it does. This keeper is just not that exciting signing that we all want. Neither is he a signing that will strike fear into the hearts of Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool fans. This pre season is simply a total farse and everyone at United should be ashamed of themselves!
GROAN - The ambition of the club WOW. I accept everyone in football is awaiting the Real Madrid situation and the Italian court case but surely some of United's targets are not linked to either of these factors - the press say we're getting twitchy - 'bluddy desperate' is more accurate, and our track record of buying long-term GKeepers is appalling....another 3.5M wasted me thinks.
