Silvestre given World Cup boost

MIKAEL Silvestre has not given up hope of playing for France in this summer's World Cup finals.

The Reds defender has not played for Les Bleus since October 2004, but has been given new hope in his bid for a place.

"After the final in Cardiff, I said to French TV that I could get some holidays in the summer," he told French sportspaper L'Equipe.

"Then, going back to the airport, Louis Saha gave me the phone and it was Domenech's assistant. Raymond Domenech has always repeated there is no black list, we have to keep hope.

Challenge

"So I worked that way. We are just a few months before the 23-player list. That call is a great challenge and I have nothing to lose.

"Today, I have more chances to play in the World Cup than yesterday."

There has been speculation about Silvestre's future at United following the arrival of Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, plus the strong form of Wes Brown.

However, Silvestre started at full-back in Sunday's Carling Cup final win and put in a solid performance.

What do you make of Silvestre's recent form at United? Have your say.

He has always been a better left back than centre back for me as his mistakes are not so costly, what is a little disturbing though is that france are struggling for a left back and have been playing gallas and have now called up silvestre as i understand gallas may miss the game but in all this time i have not heard a whisper of them looking at evra so the coach obviously doesn't rate him as a left back and he will have seen a lot more of him than any of us.

Gaz - good point, well made. Rubbish.

Lets hope he keeps it up, so he'll look alot more attractive to whoever want's to buy him in the summer. Bye, bye.

Agree Gaz. Ok we have to give Evra time but why hasn't he had a go in midfield where I thought he could play? As I say I'm not giving up on him but in terms of priorities & cash it seems a strange move at this stage. Mik has done ok at LB recently if we fail to come 2nd in PL Evra has to be looked on as another Fergie transfer cock up.

from what i have seen so far, it's Silvestre over Evra on the left anytime

I find him to be a very annoying player. His lack of concentration has been costly however he is probably one of the best long ball passers in the squad. I'm sure we'll see him move on this summer.

hard to work out why MS is seen as a better player than Evra...

I sure hope he play's for france. at times the comments "on line" have been brutal and greatly unfair. not english at all. sylvestre has done good soccer for united over the years and deserves this opportunity. recently it became obvious that sir alex ferguson appreciates his work.

thank you.

I think everyone is being a little hasty in their assesment of Evra. It takes time to adjust to the pace & physicality of the EPL. As for Silvestre being picked ahead of Evra for France, don't forget Domenech has persisted ( like Soness ) with Boumsong as his defensive rock. After the wc I expect to see Domenech & Souness both on the dole queue.

He's been fantastic in the left spot position at United in the past. Why SAF ever allowed him to occupy central defence for so long>> If his form returns at left back he might stay but his best is probably behind him.

Any comparison between Silvestre and Evra is inherently flawed. Silvestre was dreadful for most of his first season with us before slowly improving into a very good defender. Unfortunately, over the last couple of seasons his standards have been dropping. Some of his performance's (especially in Europe) have been woeful. Which is why he was dropped from les bleus and why Evra and Vidic were signed, to provide cover in the two positions he usually plays for United. Silvestre's form has picked up over the last few games which is a good thing, whichever way you look at it. But he's proven himself too unreliable to hold down a regular place in the side. Mik's on his bike in the summer, no doubt about it. For his sake (and for the sake of our transfer kitty), I hope he gets a run in the French side and signs for a decent club. For a while, he was one of our better defenders and his attitude has always been good. As for Evra (who is still only 24, don't forget), he hasn't been getting a look in for France because there's some pretty stiff competition at left-back (and the left side of midfield) but this doesn't make him a bad player. And, if you ask me, he's showed far more promise in his first couple of games for United than Silvestre did in his first dozen. But we're not gonna see the best of Evra for another year at least. Of course, in the meanwhile, every FOB and his wife will be falling over themselves to slag him off as another "Fergie transfer disaster".

I am another who could not at all understand the need for Evra and who also remains doubtful of the need for Vidic,. However after the England game last night it appears that Rio is back to his day dreaming, grossely overpaid ways, so perhaps Vidic, Brown and Pique are the future. As for EIH, he makes a perfectly adequate left back back up to Heinze, which nicely takes me back to where I started, the incongruous Evra.

Mick, Dublin what stiff competition at left back are you talking about france have been playing gallas a right footed centre back at left back and have now called up silvestre cause he is injured. I just don't see Evra as a left winger as although he is good on the ball ilike wingers that have something special, a little guile and a trick or two.

Chill out Mick, aren't we suppose to be dropping the FIG, FOB nonsense.

Have to say that some pro AF fans are becoming a bit over protective! These sites wouldn't survive if everyone agreed & it's football!

Gallas is excellent at left back. He's excellent pretty much anywhere across the back line. And I probably shouldn't have stirred up all that FIG/FOB crap but nothing annoys me more than people writing off players before they've had a chance to settle in. And Evra's getting written off quicker than almost any other signing I can remember.

well said george of rhyl syl was a competent left back who was actually left footed. could provide searching diagonal balls. af made him into a vv poor ch and destroyed his confidence. square pegs round holes our squad is riddled with it
