Manchester United

Ferguson left frustrated

SIR ALEX Ferguson believes the "nature of FA Cup football" was to blame for United's embarrassing goalless draw with Burton Albion.

The two will meet again at Old Trafford on January 18 in the third-round replay.

Ferguson told Sky Sports: "They are satisfied with the point and to come to Old Trafford - they are still in the cup.

"We were expected to win. But football is not as easy as that - you've seen the nature of FA Cup football today.

"Anything can happen. It was a difficult pitch, and our opponents were committed - you can get shocks, and fortunately we didn't get a severe shock today.

Scrambled

"Nothing really serious happened against us apart from a couple of corners which were scrambled clear in the first half.

"We had some half-chances and one or two good chances. But I won't deny Burton - it's a great draw for them."

After last year's third-round draw on exactly the same date with another Nationwide Conference club - Exeter - the Scot joked that United are turning out to be a financial lifeline.

He added: "We're keeping teams alive. We've given Exeter a wonderful pay-off, and this year it's Burton's turn.

"We've got a lot of football to play but we have a strong squad - and adding two players Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic helps us in terms of squad numbers.

"They will play a part in the games we have got coming up."

Do you think United will have any problems in the replay? Have your say.

We won't have any problems in the replay, but the display against Burton Albion (who?) demonstrates all too clearly just how thin our resources are.

Ferguson seems to be living in the past - clubs in European Competitions "Save" players for bigger games. What does Ferguson think he's saving players for exactly?
Sadly, we're no longer that good. We need the full team out to give us any chance of winning anything this season.

defence who had never played together. central midfield the usual dross very poor service to the forwards. outpassed by a conference team who controlled the midfield they did not resort to the long ball game. lets face it our midfield is very very very poor. and ubtil we resolve this we will not be a force to be reckoned with

Some of these statements begger belief. As if the two new signings were made with Burton Albion in mind. What a laugh.

So what do all of you Fergie boot lickers think of
this result? As a Man Utd supporter, its real hard to be positive when, as has often been the case over the past couple of seasons, you see a disgraceful performances like these, then read Fergies rubbish afterwards.
2 shots on target against a non league team, outfought for most of the match and lucky they didn,t score a winner.
Cloughie,s lads deserve the replay,
Its getting long overdue time for the 3 Stooges Fergie, Quieroz and Phelan to go.
We were well perpared a couple of days ago so the "spin" said what a joke.
Roll on the summer and the arrival of Capello because these embarrassments are getting harder to bear.

do me a favour and play your strongest team. that was simply a joke. two yaers in a row fergie puts out a waekened side and they fail. someone plaese tell what the likes of oshea, silvestre and saha are still doing playing for manchester united, its an insult to the fans that players like these are still plying there trade with united. most of the deadwood are gone and we the fans are still waiting for the rest.

I'm, sure ManU will go through. I haven't seen the game but i'm very disappointed. Teams from the 6th leage should be easily beaten by the Reserve team. A Rooney or Ronaldo shouldn't have to play to win this kind of games. So I think the players should ask themselves whether they took the game too lightly (or maybe a win for granted).

UNITED'S BIGGEST PROBLEMS OF LATE SEEMS TO BE "TURNING UP" MY ONLY COMMENT ON THIS LATEST PERFORMANCE IS SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!

2 teams evenly matched! The pitch was rank & Burton were hyped up but really until Rooney came on we were flat. I watched Liverpool & hoped they'd lose but they didn't cos they had a drive mainly in the form of Gerard. Alex we've been screaming for someone lke him for years to play alongside Keane why have you bought rubbish? Good we've hopefully bought 2 good defenders but the big issue is CM as everybody knows & Alex is a lucky man if he gets to choose. I still say another manager should lead us forward to overcome Chelski.

We won't have any problems in the replay. I'm glad to hear that he will take advantage of the extra game and involve Vidic and Evra. Vidic hasn't played for a while so 90 minuets there will help. Evra fine and will probably start on Wednesday against Blackburn. Others will get another extra game against Burton like Howard, Pique, Bardsley, Solskjear and Saha. I would assume that Smith and Fletcher may enter the frame and give us a better midfield pairing. Today midfield was terrible in my opinion and why we didn't win. They had too many problems with the pitch, the likes of Richardson, Jones and O'Shea. We can't expect to much from Solksjear and would do well to get another couple of reserve games in him. He should start uprfont anyway, not on the right.

What's Fergie thinking?, he was saying he didnt want another exeter result and so he picks yet another weakened team. this is the only realistic big prize we can win this year, bigger than league cup anyway. when will he ever learn

"They are satisfied with the point"!!!! What point you mispicking idjit? Didn't you also say last year that you'll never make this mistake again? We've waited 53 years to play a non-league team, we finally do it twice a row, and you effin blew it...TWICE! Anything less than a record 11-0 win in the replay and you deserve the...

Will you lot get a grip! United's XI was made up of 11 players that have never played in the same 11 as each other before containing many youngsters. O'Shea only came into the team at the last minute due to Park being injured in the warm up. It was an absolutely terrible pitch and it was noticeable how much we improved in the second half when we started knocking the ball long instead of trying to play the way all of our players have been educated which is pass and move - that was simply impossible on that pitch. Give Burton some credit and stop knocking our players. I can't believe how fickle our fans are at times. It was Solskjaer's first start for almost 2 years. Saha is trying to get match fitness and let's face it he did not have much service yesterday and getting the ball under control on that pitch and doing stuff with it was so difficult, RVN would have done no better. Rossi is young and is learning, same with Jones. Wes did well and Pique was excellent. For an 18 year old playing in those conditions it was a superb performance. Bardsley showed good potential again. Yesterday's game was great experience for the likes of Rossi, Pique, Bardsley, Jones and will make them better players, it also gave much needed playing time to Saha and Solskjaer and the replay will do much the same. It was a fantastic result for Burton Albion and the replay will give them another financial boost. I predict that we will win the replay by at least 3 clear goals and nothing has been lost by drawing yesterday's game in fact I think there are only positives to be gained as like I say the replay will give more experience to our young players, allow Solskjaer & Saha to get more much needed playing time and will also allow Vidic and Evra to play. So please get a grip and stop being so fickle.

Some of you lot are absolutely absurd! "We expect this, blah blah, that was unacceptable" - what a load of rubbish! You guys need to get real and realise what supporting a football club is all about! You could see from before kick-off that this was not going to be an easy game and the Burton players all played out of their skin, to a man. Meanwhile we took half of the match working out how to play on such a rutted pitch and then were unlucky not to score in the second half. I don't believe Fergie or the players were distraught when they left last night and we all know that they'll probably win the replay easily. The fact is, NO TEAM is immune to an FA Cup upset and that's exactly why it's such a great comp. Fergie should have played his best team from the start but who cares? We may as well get replays as our fixture list isn't exactly bulging with Champs Lge games is it? As for some of you on this board SUPPORT, stop whinging all the time!

Rob, Baguley: Actually some of us here are not being fickle, we're actually being very consistent in saying that Ferguson is a spent force and should step down and have been saying so for some time. Would agree that some of the youngsters (Pique and Bardsley) did well, so what a kick in the teeth it must be for them to see the likes of Evra and Vidic drafted in. More competition in defence whilst central midfield still looks like a black hole - Jones and O'Shea? What does Ferguson think he's playing at? Anyway, let's get this into perspective - this was Burton Albion...not some tricky away game in Europe, but a team from the Conference. How anyone can regard the team selection (especially after last year's debacle against Exeter)or the performance as acceptable is beyond me. The likes of Richardson and O'Shea should have their wages docked for their pathetic performances. Meanwhile, Ferguson jokes that we are keeping clubs like Exeter & Burton in business - I'm glad he finds it so amusing. Personally. I think it's a huge embarassment. How much longer are the Glazers going to allow this dismal farce to go on?

Read the comment of Rob, Baguley! Get a grip. To claim that this result should be the one that get Sir Alex sacked... unbelivable. Yes, the result itself was bad, very bad, but you can't forget the fact that the game was played on a potatofield and you can't discredit the Burton-players who had the game of their lives whilst our players obviously would have problems performing on a pitch where it wasn't possible to play the football they've breeded to play. Apart from the blip in the CL, we've had a fairly good season and we've been on a helluva run in the PL. New signings have been brought in and there will come a few more until next season kicks off to add both dept, quality and spice to our team. If we loose the replay, then come back, but until then, try to analyze our situation in a bit bigger picture than 2x45 surrealistic minutes against Burton!

You are so wrong.
SAF has to go. We have lots of rubish playing for United and he should have played with a better first team or is he saving players to the Carling Cup? you do agree that PL is over don't you?
Most of them wouldn't start at Burtons side...
Yes the pitch was poor but it would affect a player like Ronaldo and not O'shea, don't you agree?
Solsjaer should start in the reserves its too early to play him in this kind of games, to be honest I don't feel he will be back at same level, but we have to wait to see.

Has anybody seen Quaresmas goals this season?
Why is MU interested in SimC"o?
Quaresma is 21 and the best portuguese player just now and he will just get better.
Benfica is asking for 20 million euros; for the same money or a bit less you would get a player that would fit SAFs philosophy of top young players. with a playmaker like Aimar or Riquelme and maybe Deco if Barcelona gets Lampard: Mu would become a very interesting team to watch.
By the way your B team was really a C or D team.

Its ot often Alex blames himself for anything he has no need to blame anybody for this, what he should do however is blame himself for not retiring when he did, that cost us the title that season.

For Pete's sake, stop flapping about this. It has happened before (remember Exeter?) and I dare say it'll happen again, and to plenty of other Premiership clubs besides United. Yes, of course we should have won, even with a bunch of reserves out there, but the pitch was like Ainsdale beach at low tide, and the Burton team went out to play like their lives depended on it, as do all lower division sides in a situation like this. Mind you, I'll be less generous towards United if we don't stuff 'em at Old Trafford, reserves or no reserves.

Another "charitable" gesture from Fergie.Realistically with only the FA Cup and the League Cup our trophy aspirations now, why make so many changes.Whatever his reasons were, the youngsters generally performed well and should be the starting line up for the replay.Let them gain further experience if that was his intention. What are his intentions for the Blackburn game?

Are some fans not embarrassed by that result or have they been conditioned into not having a team any ABCD MU side that can't beat Burton or Exeter? It's appalling no excuses & I'll be interested to see what the attendance is in the replay. Even I have a positive that Brown & Pique were good & took no nonsense but as for O'Shea well words fail me.

Sir Alex, why don't you give Pique a chance instad of Rio? Rossi should start before Ruud (Mary, eh..?)! Richardson is better than old Giggs and one-trick
-Ronaldo - play him at the wing! Drop dreadful Fletcher and let the youngsters like Jones have a go! Oh, that's just what happened against Burton. Sir Alex, why didn't you play Rio instead of Pique? How could you let Jones get a place ahead of Fletcher who'd played fairly decent the last games? How could you let Richardson start ahead of Giggs and Ronaldo? Why did you rest Ruud and gave unexperienced Rossi the chance in such a difficult game???
