FORMER Reds star Dwight Yorke has warned United's current crop of stars not to rest on their laurels - unless they want the boot from Old Trafford.
Yorke, now the midfield lynchpin of Sydney FC in Australia, found himself given the cold shoulder at Old Trafford after the club tried to sell him in 2002.
Having been forced out of the Reds reckoning, and ending up - via an unhappy spell at Birmingham - in Australia, he's since watched as other key members of his era at Old Trafford have exited the club under less than perfect circumstances.
David Beckham, Andrew Cole and most recently Roy Keane have all gone, and Yorke has warned the rest of United's stars not to get too comfortable in case Sir Alex Ferguson decides to move them on, too.
"It's inevitable that even the great players have to go at some point as well," he said.
"As much as you might not want to, the manager is the one who calls the shots. He's done it over the years and I can't see that changing while he's in charge.
"That said, who would have thought it would happen to Roy Keane? Of all the people at that club, I never expected it to happen to him."
But with so much speculation over Ferguson's own future at the club, Yorke admits he expects Ferguson - or the club's new owners - to know when it is the right time to step down.
"Everyone has to leave at some stage, including the great man," he told the Daily Mail.
"But he will know when is time is up, or the board will know when his time is up, or the Glazer family will know.
"I don't know, it's not for me to say."
When should Ferguson go? Have your say.

Unfortunately, with no cash to spend, and the lure of playing for United is no longer attractive; I doubt if any of the current players will get the boot even if they played badly, unless of course they start criticizing the BOSS. United will just have to stick with the current squad, for good or bad, even though I would like very much to see some of the current first 11 get the sack.
The last line of this piece says it all: "It's not for me to say." Quite. So just can it, Dwight.
Never really understood what happened to Yorke for two years he was awsome and then he went backwards like you wouldn't believe. He famously once said in 1999 if he won the treble he might as well retire i think in his head he did.
Playing for Untied is no longer attractive??? You absolute half wit.
Fergie shud step down at the end of the season idealy with the premiership title but settle for the carling cup and the fa cup. his replacement Gus Hiddink or maybe a director of football/coach combo like spurs had with arneson and jol, possibly hiddink(dof) Keane (coach)
Gaz North Stand; I think SAF was dissapointed that Yorke had put on a colossal amount of weight.3stone I heard mentioned. It happened in the summer break and that kind of increase takes some getting rid off.He was probably never quite as quick after that! Santa Clause in red!
Yorkie,
They have always said change is as good as rest.
Coley moved from United a few years back and still fires in great goals.
How about that then?
if only yorke know how to say this much earlier...
calling someone a half-wit for stating the obvious, i.e., top players are not coming ManU anymore, has an ironic absurdity that defies all common sense...as for the question posed by MEN- when should fergie leave? - i think he should step down right now but understand a more likely scenario will be the summer...
When should Fergie go? How's about six months ago.
Heheh Gaz, Jordan happened to him mate! The wrong woman can bring the best man down. But I'll never forget him for scoring that hat-trick against the Goners. Spot on Rob - absolutely spot on.
Top players dont want to come to Man Utd anymore???????? Eh Rooney? Stupid thing to say really. The fact that we havent bought in that many of late is a managerial issue . Historically we give players the stage to become top players. But to say they simple arent interested is untrue. As that very annoying song goes "its all about the money......."
how is playing for united not attractive??
ye maybe were not guaranteed to win the league all the time nemore and we are going through a bit of turmoil at the mo but that doesnt mean playing in the best stadium in england week in week out, playing with top class players like rooney n ruud and legends like giggsy n scholes, competing at the highest level, picking up a handsome paycheck and not to mention playing for one of the most richly historic and prestigous clubs in the world is not an attraction.
just because all the bigshots want to go to chelsea now doesnt mean we still cant get good players.
