RONALDO: Mourning father

REDS winger Cristiano Ronaldo looks set to miss this weekend's Manchester derby after the death of his father.

Dinis Aveiro had been ill for some time, and passed away on Tuesday.

The player is currently away on international duty in Russia with Portugal, but is expected to fly home to his family after the game.

And it seems certain that he will not feature in the derby match against City on Saturday.

A club spokesperson said: "Our thoughts are with Cristiano and his family at this very difficult time."

Its very hard to loose a father or mother I never got over my fathers death and my mother would be worse.

I have to admit to being glad he won't be playing but very sorry to hear that it is the result of his fathers death. Very sad. Anyone know how old is father was?

as a city fan i just wish the lad and his family all the very best.its not about football at a time like this.if he plays in the derby i just hope there isnt any mindless city fans that fing it funny to sing or shout anything that causes the lad any disrespect.at the end of the day if he does play it would be an outlet for the lad to take his mind of his loss.

Alex, a bit of respect please. Its extremely sad that a young man will have to grow up without the role of a father figure. I also feel that its very bad on the websites behalf to only think about how this will effect the starting line up of for the derby, there are bigger things in life than football. My thoughts are with Cristiano and his family.

Great to see that the City fans making comments so far have been nothing but respectful. This is the way it should be on both sides of the fence, I'm sure we are all up for a bit of banter on each side but there is a line that shouldn't be crossed. A big respect to the City and United fans giving there condolences.

Spot on Chris, I'm a true Blue and am always up for a bit of banter between the teams but hate it when it goes too far ie tasteless chants etc. My sincere condolences to the young lad.

Alex Luyinda, I'm not sure you quite understand the story. It is not Ronaldo that has died, it is his father. I send my sincere condolonces to Cristiano and all of his family and friends at this very sad time. I hope that Ronaldo plays tonight and has a blinder and scores a cracker as a suitable dedication to his father's life. Whether or not we will miss Ronaldo for the derby is irrelevant at a time like this. A player of Ronaldo's ability would be missed by any team in the world, but this is now about letting Cristiano mourn his loss and if he feels he needs some time off then I hope that everyone involved with United and Portugal etc will respect his wishes.

How sad - every footballing dad lives to watch their son play the game. Cris is quite young and may take some time to recover, though he may by getting absorbed in the season.

Cristiano, I am so sorry on the sad loss of your dear father.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family and always remember, your father will be watching over you and will be with you every day and he is now being very well looked after. He must have been so proud to see his fine son become so successful and turn into a terrific young man.
