FC United prepare for big launch

DEFIANT Old Trafford rebels will forge ahead with the launch of FC United on Tuesday night, insisting: "We are here to stay."

Members of the new club - set up in response to Malcolm Glazer's controversial takeover of Manchester United - will elect a formal board, badge and team strip at their first extraordinary general meeting.

And they are adamant FC United will continue to receive full backing irrespective of any changing circumstances involving Glazer at the Premiership giants.

Jules Spencer, who resigned his position as chairman of the Independent Manchester United Supporters Association and is a member of the 12-strong FC United steering committee, said: "The overall ambition remains to win the battle with Glazer.

"But at the same time if Glazer were to disappear tomorrow then we would not put the brakes on FC United.

"While FC United is part of the overall campaign against Glazer, it is also seeking to emphasise the positives and attract back disenfranchised football fans.

"We are trying to attract people who have not renewed their season tickets and those who cannot afford to take their family to Old Trafford, and make the club a real asset to the community."

FC United manager Karl Marginson has selected his squad and is preparing his team for their first ever match, a friendly against Leigh RMI on July 16.

FC United will also travel to AFC Wimbledon on July 23 for a match in which the Supporters Direct Trust Cup will be at stake.

The trophy has previously been competed for by Brentford and Enfield Town - clubs who are also owned or operated entirely by their supporters.

FC United have been accepted into the second division of the North West Counties League and are awaiting council approval to share Droylsden's 3,500-capacity Butcher's Arms Ground.

At 7pm all residents of the Strawberry Old folks home will join with other sheltered accommodations from the area and form a human chain spanning from The British Legion down to the Strawberry Gardens. This will be via the local public W.C. (See, they think of everything). The 'rebels' will for the human chain and are willing to take on all-oncomers. So it's roll out the barrell in Droylsden, so just remember FC United, you'll have to succeed where Hitler failed!........ Pack up your troubles.......

This whole 'breakaway' club issue demonstrates what a FARCE United has become! We are the laughing stock of football. I've not renewed my season ticket and will never set foot in that place again, regardless who owns the club! As for the the AFC stuff, you're a joke and won't be seeing a penny of my money, I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than pay good money to watch another a bunch of clowns win NOTHING!!

Somethings are a blessing in disguise; its hightime we separated royalists from journeymen. If i may ask; 1.How could anyone with asober maind think that Glazer could invest such a fortune into a business that he doesnt wish to succed?
2.What has he sofar changed that is not in the interest of the club?
3.If its tha rule of the game that he who owns over 97% takes over,so why change goalposts?
Simple advise; Lets us support Glazer because whatever he does he does it for one United " Man Utd".

On the contrary z-man in lovely sweden it is the people that care the most that are taking United's soul to a better place . Where it will be out of the reach of parasites , mercenaries, prawn sandwich munchers, and gloryhunting daytrippers. You can't buy what we had . Were YOU there in 65 queing in the rain just to get into a queue for the stretford end. Singing non stop on european nights. Were you there through relegation ? Liverpool ascendancy ? Did you wait a quarter of a century for a league title. Don't you dare tell me i didn't care . I'm a proud Red - not a mug to pay off a rich man's mortgage. Viva the spirit and soul of a local football team . Viva FC United of Manchester.

How anyone can be against something like this is beyond me. Standing up to the way this game is heading can only be a good thing.
I'll be at the meeting tomorrow and can't wait for the season to start!

North West Counties League? When's the home game against City then? Also, can we be sure ticket prices at FC Short-Sighted will never EVER rise, no merchandise will ever be produced, people from 10 or more miles away from Droylesden will never be allowed to support them and only fans with a proven track record of brick throwing, protest banner stitching and a degree from the University of hard knocks will turn up? Sorry lads but i'm afraid THERE'S ONLY ONE UNITED and i'll go on supporting the TEAM I love despite the unfortunate aspect of their ownership.

Good luck to the egotistic 'few'.
Man United are bigger than any Glazer , Edwards, Busby, Mickey Mouse or FC United.
At least the loyal fans of Manu who stick by them through thick or thin will still 30 years and won.........in March.
Cheers,
a real RED

It seems as though most people are treating FC United as a joke.....but they could be making a big mistake. There is nothing to stop Glazer moving the team or the whole club to the U.S. It happens over here often.
For instance, This year the Toronto baseball team moved to Washington D.C. The current L.A. Lakers basketball club came from Milwaukee; the
Cleveland Browns football team, with a huge following, went to Baltimore, etc., etc., etc.
Also, on a trip to Manchester last year, I found that many former fans of United felt that the club doesn't represent them anymore.
So good luck to FC United...it can be done!

Yeah good stuff. He will sign, ofcourse, but more worrisome is the fact that Rio is not willing to allay anyone's fears. Having said that, I would very much like to know why oh why is Fergie not pursuing possibly the BEST midfield player out there right now, and one in which he put alot of stock in this time last year, before even talk of signing Rooney (when Newcastle all of a sudden said they were interested..). The man I'm referring to is an absolute gem, and has the exact measure of aggression, sheer talent, and brutal hunger. CARLOS TEVEZ. We should be getting this brilliant player NoW!! I don't understand why Fergie let him go to Santos, or some team back in South America. He would link up brilliantly with his fellow Argentine, Heinze, and can you imagine the muscle we would have moving the ball from the back 4, to Tevez (who basically looks like a boxer), and the silky skills he would muster in spreading it about to the wings, or playing up with Rooney and having a crack himself. TEVEZ would be absolutely teriffic for our mid-field. I know it, you lot should know it, and Fergie knew it and even talked about him LAST YEAR. FErgie...please if you're bothering to read this Fan's Opinion thread...Please try to get Tevez. TEVEZ!!!!!

Wow, what a shock. The same bunch of clueless numpites dive onto the story posting pointless drivel for their own amusement once again.

Ill informed drivel too by the look of it. I'm heartenend that the calibre of people not on board with this project are thankfully eclipsed by those who are.

FC United, the haven for the terminally childish and immature.
I agree with Mary, the number of extremists attending these games(All 300-500 of them) will necessitate a large police presence, hopefully with riot gear on hand, just in case these yobs don't get their way.
I pity the small clubs in the NWCL, having to put up with the 'redder than red' brigade invading their little grounds and towns next season.
Still, at least the loyal, real United fans will be better off without them polluting the OT atmosphere, with their narrow minded views of other United supporters.

Lets hope Man Utd play them in the FA Cup and give them and their hooligan fans a good hiding.

I hope that the MEN will take the opportunity of the formal launch of FCU to ensure that this is the last of these stories to appear in this section. This is a completely separate club that has nothing to do with MUFC and like many others, I am getting increasingly irritated by the MEN's assumption that real United fans actually give a monkey's about what these people are doing. Good luck and good riddance to them all and can we now have our messageboard back, please?

Good luck to all at FC United. I admire your stand and commitment. As for those who opine that they will be watched by 300 hoooligans...you'll have to wait and see. You're going to do that with Glazer anyhow so why change your stance? I'm not a hooligan and I'll be going to games. I'll go to Old Trafford too. It's not about a choice, more an alternative to the overpriced Premiership.

Predicatbly bitter nonsense from those who know deep down they that those at FC United are doing a very noble thing. FC United are a part of Manchester United and have as valid a place within these pages as comments from people from Birmingham, Southend or Malaysia (you can't have it both ways). All are welcome and it makes me very sad to see such bitterness from Manchester United fans towards those who actually care enough to try to make the club better for everyone. There is such insecurity about these anti-FCUM comments - if you don't agree with it or more likely don't understand it, then ignore it - it needn't concern you. Maybe you scared that if you took the time to find out what its really about, it would force you to do some reflective thinking about yourself, and you know deep down what you would find.

There is a danger that a club without television coverage and global marketing campaigns may be viewed as parochial or exclusive to Mancunians, but that is far from the truth. Everyone is welcome at FC United (a broader section of society than have access to OT anyway), and if people are turned off by the lack of glamour and lack of media whoring then so be it - you'll be more than welcome at Glazer's United. We will sell shirts and other merchandise, ticket prices will rise, but it will be done democratically, and with the fans interests at heart, not with dividend payments or loan repayments in mind.
A football club should be run for the benefit of the MATCH-GOING fans, whether they travel from Stretford or Singapore, Moston or Melbourne. What it should not be tailored to are the armchair fans. They are more than welcome to be fans, and to express that support in whatever way they want, and a global following is something to be proud of, but on no account should key club decisions be made to suit their needs. Kick-off times, ticket prices, the future direction of the club are the concern of the true cultural stakeholders - the MATCH-GOING fans, wherever you come from, not of armchair moaners from Sale, Surbiton or Sweden.
