THE Glazer family arrived at Old Trafford last night and left, hidden in the back of a van to the sound of police dogs, abusive chanting and outright violence.
If Joel, Avi and Bryan, all three newly elected to the United board, felt their policy of non-communication during father Malcolm's controversial £790million takeover would ease the resentment among rank and file Red Devils support, they were badly mistaken.
It took more than 100 Greater Manchester Police officers, scores of dogs and a massive security operation, including the complete closure of Sir Matt Busby Way, to get the Glazers out of the ground as around 500 fans swarmed the Old Trafford stadium.
Never in the history of English football can such an unwelcome reception have been laid on for the new owners of a club.
It may be doubtful whether the same anger can be whipped up again today should the trio return to meet the United staff, but the consistent chants of "die Glazer die" left little room for debate over the Glazer family's popularity in Stretford, nor the scuffles which erupted between police and fans as the way was paved for the brothers to make their speedy exit, hidden away in the back of a police van.
"The Glazer family are the enemies of Manchester United," said Shareholders United vice-chairman Sean Bones, who was present throughout the five-hour demonstration.
"We find them disgusting and repulsive. They may have captured the club but they only have it on a temporary basis.
"It might take a long time, maybe two or three years, but we are showing Glazer that we won't give up.
"In the long-term the Glazer brand will be suffocated. The previous Manchester United brand was peerless in terms of sporting brand names.
"The Glazer brand is toxic and tarnished, uncool and unstylish. Glazer will lose the war."
The Glazers were accompanied on a tour of Old Trafford by chief executive David Gill and commercial director Andy Anson - ironically ousted and then reinstated to the United board by Malcolm Glazer.
Their visit followed meetings with club sponsors and came 24 hours after they held discussions with English soccer's top brass, plus Sports Minister Richard Caborn.

It's pathetic - they claim they are acting in the best interests of our club yet what have they done? 1. Started a new club (abandoning their profeesed love and essentially making themselves the Glazers of the Ryman One Man and his Dog North West League) ***What happens when Glazer leaves? do they ditch that club or keep making money from it?, 2. Boycotted United goods and sponsors (which will only ever affect the health of our club and team in a negative way - really constructive boys!) 3. Run around like overgrown monkeys burning effigies, slinging mud and chanting 'die! die!' - are they Millwall in disguise? All this violence coupled with the mock professionalism of appearing on the TV news is acted out under the guise of being the voice of United fans. Well they don't represent me or probably thousands of other reds who ARE very concerned about OUR club. The worry about the Glazer takeover is real but the time has now come when we will finally be let in on their plans. Whether this is right or wrong in the eyes of the Shareholders United SS division doesn't bother me whatsoever. My loyalty is, has been and always will be to MU (the players, the manager, the stadium, the fans). That will go on forever and I for one will be quite optimistic if the Glazers set out a long term plan for success on MUTV today. I owned shares and didn't want them to buy, but whats done is done and it's the team that matters - beating Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, the bitters and scummy Leeds (if we ever offer them a pre-season friendly).

These would have been the same yobs as in the old days started trouble at matches.Bones should not be given any coverage at all by the media.Glazer should take a private action against SU united and take them to Town.

If Liverpool were the target of a hostile takeover that saw them put B#500m in debt do you think their fans would sit back and watch? The MEN would probably run a centre page spread praising their 'passion.'

- mmmmm really tasteful lads. The more and more i see these kind of stupid actions and comments, the less i care about what you're standing for. I thought it was abmirable what shareholders utd were doing, but since the takeover started, things have gone downhill with all these small hardline groups spouting offensive nonsense. Yeah i wasn't happy with the takeover, but i'm prepared more than ever to give them a chance now. As for the protesters turned yobs, go and form your sunday league club and take the trouble with you.

It just reinforces that we have some of the best supporters in the world, people who actually care about United's long-term future and not just winning trophies.

I don't particularly like them, but if we're stuck with them let's hope for the club's sake that they start to act a bit more professionally.
Today's papers should have been full of pictures of them admiringly walking around Old Trafford. Instead there's pictures of them hiding in police vans.
Another badly handled mess.
