The Red Devils finished third in the Premiership, were eliminated at the last-16 stage of the Champions League and lost on penalties to Arsenal in the FA Cup final last month after dominating the match.
Now Ferguson wants a positive response from his players when they gather for pre-season training at the end of the month.
"The test of any manager or player however is how they handle adversity," the Scot said.
"We've always been galvanised by disappointment because there's a good character in the team.
"We didn't deserve what happened 1/8in the cup final3/8. We'll get ourselves off the ground next season."
Ferguson and his assistant Carlos Queiroz are determined to start the season at full tilt, just as Chelsea did last time around en route to their convincing title success.
He believes Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo have given him particular cause for optimism.
"We're heading towards a new team with some of the young players that are here," he told United magazine.
"You could have tossed a coin for man of the match out of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo in the FA Cup final. They were great, the pair of them.
"I always felt Wayne was a player that could re-shape our future and that is the way it is looking at the moment. There's a great future for those boys, and Darren Fletcher as well." Tweet

No football, (only the odd Confederations cup game.) Big Brother, I wish I was a celebrity please get my career going again Love Muppet Island, Glazer, and Fergie spouting the same rubbish from last season. Yes we know Rooney and Ronaldo are GREAT! but do us all a favour Shut-up and sort out the Midfield! We all know its not down to the Strikers and missed chances but to the fact you seem intent on Prolonging Keane's United Career to the detriment of Scholes and Ruud's.
Can't understanding why Fergie mentions Fletcher in the same breadth as Ronaldo and Rooney.
I hope adversity does build character, and yes, I hope the players do stand up and be counted: BUT, WILL FERGIE AND HIS MANAGEMENT TEAM DO THE SAME?
I feel complacency has set in and the way the scouting system has operated, transfers have been handled etc leaves a lot to be disired. Martin Ferguson has recommended mediocre players in the past. Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel were both on trial at United. Essien is now worth about 15 million and it looks as though Mikel has been poached from under our noses.
The entire club needs a shake up. We entered a comfort zone after so many years of success.
Here we go again, the same old drivel coming from Management. Next it's going to be P. Neville telling us how the players are going to rally round and be successful next season. Don't know about everybody else, but did we not hear that all last season, and nothing happened. Action speaks louder than words.
Anesh; Roy Keane doesn't set the world alight in taking men on and fancy footwork sometimes it's just about graft.
Hopefully we wont hear anything from P.Nev, because he'll be playing for Boro next season.
How? With Roy '35 games a season' Keane and Darren Fletcher bossing midfield?? I don't think so.
I can`t agree with you guys more!!The same old platitudes about bouncing back, season in,season out have become both tiresome and irritating. The one good thing about the Glazer takeover is that SAF will be almost surely be sacked if we have another dodgy season and not a moment too soon. Talking about CR,Rooney and Fletcher in the breath??Fergie needs to have his head examined!!
