Window of opportunity: Manchester United's transfer outlook with seven days to go

Nathaniel Clyne

With just seven days now to the close of the January transfer window the doors also appear to be shutting on possible Manchester United late swoops.

A trio of injuries picked up at Arsenal on Sunday has further decimated Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad but the Reds boss has continued to insist there will be no new faces brought in during this transfer window.

Phil Jones could be out for three weeks with possible ankle ligament damage suffered at the Emirates, Nani is under treatment for a right foot injury that saw him leave Arsenal in a protective boot, and Wayne Rooney is sweating on making United’s FA Cup fourth round tie at Liverpool on Saturday lunchtime after limping away from Sunday’s match.

But boosting the squad numbers seems unlikely with long-term Reds target Wesley Sneijder today insisting he is staying put with Inter Milan in Italy.

He has suffered injuries this season which have restricted the playmaker to just eight matches, but he says: “I am in good shape and I feel well. The future? I stay at Inter, I feel good here.

“How much is left until the end of this transfer window? A week? I’m staying here.”

With Jones’ possible absence, United could step up their interest in Crystal Palace right-back Nathaniel Clyne as reported in Saturday’s M.E.N. Sport.

The 20-year-old impressed the Reds in Palace’s shock Carling Cup win at Old Trafford in November and they have been alerted to the fact he is out of contract at Selhurst Park in the summer.

Wesley Sneijder - My future is at Inter Milan

Clyne is back in the shop window again tonight in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final against Cardiff City but Palace boss Dougie Freedman says there has been no move for the right-back.

“There has not been one single approach for one of my players, so far so good,” Freedman said.

“Professionally, young Nathaniel is fine and our relationship is fantastic.

“If he is fit and he is on form then he will play as he has contributed to the team’s defence.

“We have kept many clean sheets this year and he has been involved in them.”

The future of young midfielder Ravel Morrison is still up in the air.

Newcastle United have had an initial bid for the 18-year-old, who helped the Reds win the FA Youth Cup last season, turned down by Fergie.

However, they are expected to improve their offer before the end of the transfer window.

What should United do between now and the end of the transfer window? Have your say.

Or, put it another way,.....If, as his lordship says, we wont buy anyone in this window,......
1: can we catch and pass city on points by the end of the season?
2: city have far the easier fixture run in.
3: kompany and Yaya Toure will be back in weeks.
4: How long before Jones is back 100%.
5: In the absense of Jones/Vidic, is his lordship happy with evans/ferdinand?

Maybe a deal has been struck for Clyne, which will be announced after Palace,s big game tonight?
Certainly, a top class right back would help, and a fully fit TC.

We always say that Man Utd has lots of youngsters coming through - isn't now the time to get some involved if we're seeing more and more injuries.

I do wonder why we suffer with more injuries than most. It certainly hampers us.

Who of the youngsters could step-in and help out? Do we recall Gary Neville!?!?! ;-)

Can de Laet be recalled from loan?
Are the de Silva brothers on the road back from recovery?
What about Pogba / Morrison / Larnell Cole for Midfield?
When is Cleverley due back?

I'm not sure we need to buy at the moment, although as above, I'm curious why we always have a stack of injuries.

It looks as though the Croatian Under 21 player Mateo Kovacic will not be heading our way, as Utd baulked at paying £10m for an unproven talent!

It's a shame that the same rigorous due diligence was not in evidence when they signed Bebe, who arrived on the back of some dodgy You Tube posting.

Fully concur with the possible signing of Clyne, but fear that Sir Alex is investing a lot of faith in Cleverly remaining injury free and Anderson upping his game.

We haven't got any money and the Glazers are misers.

I cant see us doing much in this window. The deal for the Crystal Palace lad is likely i suppose though. Its a peanuts fee so why not. As for the major signings that we should have made in the summer, well its even harder to get those players in January. We still desperately need 2 central midfielders, a left footed left winger, and competition at left back.

why do MEN bother with this crap the manager has said there will be no signings, there is no CL money coming in so there can be no signings so why print this stuff, for a club in such dire financial straits I think it will need to be decided if we can continue paying players like Rio, Owen, Twins, Anderson millions every year to lie on the treatment table and although I hate to say it Berba his salary to warm the bench. I rate every player in this list especially Berbatov but when value for money seems to be the mantra at our club I think I have a valid point, we need players who have a chance of staying fit and who the manager has faith in and unfortunatley these 6 dont fall into that category, best to move on and bring in players who we will see week in week out and I dont mean to be harsh but they have been here long enough to know things wont change

once again all united are linked to is cheap & young players who will not make an impact. signing clyne would be no different to signing nobody as he wouldnt be any better than what weve got

its the same nonsense with bebe & obertan & wasting 10m on these awful players who are championship level @ best but the club is happy to pay it as they pay peanuts & make fans think they can buy players whereas if they buy an established player theyll not get away with pying peanuts & will have to pay top wages.

I see today weve refused to pay the 10m asking price for kovacic a genuine top young player. united are a joke in the transfer market & constantly buy kids & sell way too low & whats worse if we do spend a bit of money we overpay for garbage/average players

cant wait for the annual garbage from fergie re no value then it was no quality players available & then pogba was the reason who fergie wont even start in the carling cup for goodness sake.

well get nobody in the summer & the euros & inflated transfer fees wiil be the excuse for having no money, mark my words!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly don't know why anyone gets excited about the transfer window as far as United is concerned.

SAF has said he isn't buying anyone - that's about the only time you can trust what SAF says, whether it's lack of money, lack of knowing what's required, lack of interest in anything except SAF, who knows.. but he isn't buying anyone.

You don't bring Scholes back then buy a replacement for him at the same time - hell, he's probably hoping Scholes plays well enough for him not to do anything in summer also, or the next 3 years at least.

with a long term view, I mean to the next season, I would go for competion on the LB position and Clyne for RB would also help the squad depth. Again and again there has to be mentioned the CM position. One player with creativity is needed. I would'nt go for 2 as before mentioned by some, as we have Tunnicliffe and other talents (as long as 2 of them don't give to much on their agents). As far as I know Gaitan is left footed, but plays RW for Benfica. That is a position were we should bring in somebody too.

Clyne for RB
? for LB (unfortunately Rodriguez opted to join Wolfsburg, would have been one of my favorites!)
Modric for CM
Gaitan for LW

It makes me wonder Stuart if you are really the agent of Wesley Sneijder and trying to land a big money contract bonus for yourself. You have peddled the myth of Man Utd chasing him for six months now. Time to forget him however much you would like him at Old Trafford. He is the wrong age, wrong price and would be a wrong acquisition for the Reds. I do admire your tenacity though in flogging a dead horse to its conclusion, or do you think there maybe another couple of columns to wring out of this poor old mare?

Even without making any signings we'll be fine, we have Sir and that's the difference
between us and others. Also by not signing anyone Fergie is sending a message to
his players, I trust in you. That goes a long way in empowering our lads, they want to
play well and give back the respect Fergie has placed in them.
(furthermore we have no money so you have to make the most of what you've got and no one does that better than Sir)
Up the Reds!

NO MONEY = NO NEW PLAYERS, just plenty of talk and a change of subject to empty seats at City.

Are you deaf,AF said he wass'nt going to sign in january, too much quality in the team, they would only be keeping the bench warm!!

Sorry now, I watch the championship quite a lot and he is not even standout there.

Is there anything to be said for our current youngsters instead of a youngster from a standard championship?

Lets put all the bull aside with all the injuries we have what better time to
play the kids than now, win or loose i dont care, as ive said in previous mails
i have followed Man United for nearly seventy years, long before Fergie The
Glazers, and most others connected with the club, there is no doubt in my mind
that this is the ideal opportunity to go down the same track as the Busby Babes.

When Fergie leaves Man Utd we will be in decline because we will have sold certain players, bought none, and the rest will be entering a retirement home for old footballers. As the advert states, "The futures bright the futures orange" or in man utd 's case red, red faces. Come on Fergie we need reinforcements, we are only just hanging on to Man City at the moment, just wait till their players return from duties elsewhere, we will most probably be blown away, no disgrace in finishing second, only when it is second to Man city! Can you imagine what the summer months are going to be like here in Manchester? It is ok for the players at Man Utd they will be away on holiday, but us the supporters will be here at home in manchester taking all the snide remarks from across the city. Cheers Fergie.

What about Javi Martinez???
He's athletic, tall and good on the ball, and would suit our style.
He would no doubt add lots of the badly needed creativity to our midfield, and he would supply lots of goals, and maybe add some of them himself.
He is only 23 years old at the moment, and would be a good choice for the future, and for the next 10 years.
I heard from many sources that he has been on our radar, although there were no stories of late linking us to the Spaniard. It's long been said that SAF was interested in him though.
I certainly hope we can sign him, as he would be a good addition to our squad. I hope the interest is revived, because Martinez is a good player in my opinion.

SAF, please sign Javi Martinez! Please revive your interest in him!

proud to be a rag, united til i die

Ive already accepted that we wont be buying anyone in jan. If we are not going to go and get that midfield player we have crying out for for at least two seasons then we should bring some of the younger players through to cover injuries to the squad. This will give them valuable experience and we will see if they are actually worth all the nonsense surrounding some of them?
