Dimitar Berbatov caught in tug-of-war

Dimitar Berbatov
Dimitar Berbatov is at the centre of a battle between Russia and Germany.

The £30.75m striker is wanted by CSKA Moscow, Anzhi Makhachkala, Bayern Munich and one of his former clubs, Bayer Leverkusen.

And the 30-year-old’s future was cast in further doubt last night when he was pictured on a connecting flight to Frankfurt. Berbatov is out of contract at the end of the season and free to negotiate with prospective clubs.

Last month, Sir Alex Ferguson indicated he was ready to activate a clause in the former Tottenham striker’s deal, which gives United the option of a one-year extension.

But the photograph that emerged last night has once again placed question marks over his future.

Berbatov has slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford behind Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez. Despite scoring six goals in three games over Christmas, he was left out of the starting line-ups for United’s wins against City and Bolton, with Rooney and Welbeck now Fergie’s first-choice pairing.

Always liked him. More of a luxury squad player than a United hero. Shame it never worked out for the lad. We need the money unfortunately to pay the lekkie bill next year.

I'm also caught in a tug-of war in my mind ion whether it's worth it keeping Dimi. It's different to 99 where each of the 4 strikers got a decent number of games, and had a good chance of playing in big games. Berba is only playing the small teams, unless out of necessity. It's like having a top of the range Ferrari, and only driving it on dirt roads! I'm tilting towards letting him go and funding younger legs, or giving the likes of Morrison a chance.

Not his biggest fan but I think we need all the players until the end of the season. Then hopefully a mass clearout. Names on a postcard.....

Great technical player, oozes class, but worth nowhere near the £30.75m (plus high salary) we paid for him. We'll be lucky to get £5m for him.

Shame really, as I like the guy.He just doesn't seem to fit into Fergies thinking.

Like a lot of fans I find Berba to be an enigma.

For my part I would like to thank you for your part in our successes in recent years.

I would like for us to have a look at Koops, maybe Berba plus cash

Berba one of our best players, technically. Plus he scored 6 goals in 3 games. I dont want him to leave. But with united's current playing style it is a big ask for him to play loike himself. If he does leave for munich i hope fergie hatches a plan to capture bastian
:)

he and clevelry will win us atleat 2 european cups in the next 5 years!

On another note, is valencia getting better every match???

Good luck to him. He's class.

Shame if he goes. One of few players in game who actually thinks about the game. His ball skills are top draw. Hasn't had fair crack since this time last year. Consider lazy because he doesn't impersonate a headless chicken. If we want a headless chicken Tevez is available. What no takers!!!!

u ve my blessings, berba.

I guess that the first reaction of the anti Berba section of our supporters is to proclaim thanksgivings followed by murmurings of good riddance? On the other hand the pro Berba group will be dismayed by the fact that we will be losing such a talented footballer?

Without sounding like a typical Liberal candidate proclaiming appeasement to both factions, I am genuinely, at the moment, ‘sitting on the fence’ with regards to this probable impending transfer. I can see the justifications for both anti and pro arguments.

On the one hand Berbatov’s languid style simply does not fit into some fans’ ideas of what is generally known as the fast tempo United play. There are also times when he gives the outward impression of not being too bothered whilst his teammates are giving their whole commitment. Terms of lazy and too slow have been labelled on him.

On the other hand, he is one of the most technically gifted footballers that I have had the privilege to have ever seen. Some of his play-making has some fans drooling at his brilliance. He also has more than a decent goal ratio.

Oh go on then, I MUST make a decision! We still have Owen as a back up, and there would be a possible opening for our young striker, Keane? After weighing up all the factors in the situation, I will come down on the side of reluctantly waving goodbye to Berba. I believe that it would be a good move for both himself and Manchester United, providing that we SPEND the money from this and Darron Gibson’s transfer, and not simply bank it!

I wish Dimitar Berbatov all the very, very best for his future, and thank him for all the pleasure that he has provided me with.

United ‘til I die!

I do not comprehend at all why United would NOT initiate the one year extension to Berba's contract? Presumably, as they haven't so far done this, Berba can talk to clubs now with a view to him signing a pre contract agreement as a free agent at the end of this season - which obviously means no income for the club. If, however, they are prepared to let him go, then it makes no sense not to invoke that extension to recover at least some value out of any deal.
There are really strange things happening at United now. We appear to be letting Berbatov walk away as a free agent whilst potentially losing two of our brightest academy prospects (and I use the word "bright" here in reference to their football abilities not necessarily to their common sense and intellect), and we appear to be foing so without need, without any sort of fight and without any obvious concern. WHY?

Those that don't appreciate the "beautiful game" will be nonplussed by the likely looking exit of the incomparable Berbatov. The rest of us Utd fans will be in mourning.

Class player. Shocking how we can spend £30m on him yet fail to build round him. Also shocking that we once had that much to spend.

United should let him go since alex refused to look at him, but alex should try and bring in another striker for us.Such as Cavani and we need player like Hazard of lille.

Surely not top scorer player of the month in December no trouble off the field most talented player we have maybe with exception of Rooney and we want rid am I missing something here, was at game on Saturday and Hernandez was put on before him which astonishes me a s Ferguson says he picks on form and Hernandez has none, one thing is for sure not a word can be believed that comes from the club these days so would not surprise me if he left, I for one wont be paying 50 quid a throw next year to watch whats currently on display not a prayer

Would be madness to let him go. Can't understand why Sir Alex again has shut him out again, after six goals in three matches. Berbatov is one of a few players that add something different to our team. Why he's behind Chicarito this season is something I can't understand. Hernandez, who's been very poor so far, is a option to Welbeck, who's by a mile is the better of those two atm,

Berba should go as he is a great player and I think he is the best striker at Utd but SAF doesn't agree. The way he is being treated is a disgrace. Why are all these clubs after him? Simple he is a fabulous player, if he goes then I will watch him play as I can't take it anymore sitting on the bench or not even in the squad. It's a disgrace! Although I love watching him play with a Utd shirt on go and make a lot of football fans playing regularly

I feel sorry for Berbatov

I think he has a job to do at United and in my opinion would be starting ahead of Hernandez who is really looking like a 1 season wonder at the moment.

Welbeck has been playing well and offers a completely different style to Berbatov
which is obviously why Sir Fergie is starting him ahead of the Bulgarian with Rooney.

I would love to see him stay but it just isn't looking likely

How this gifted player has been treated is absolutely disgraceful. He continues to be loyal to the club and frankly Ferguson uis not deserving of such loyalty. Why was he purchased exactly if not going to be used?

maybe we can use the money to sign Pogba and Morrison????

It's a shame because he is such a fine player. Scored 6 goals in just over 2 matches, what more can he do? He must cringe when he sees the likes of Park, Hernandez, etc ahead of him. Also technically he is a far better player than Rooney. Has been treated very poorly and deserves better. A real waste of talent, so at least if he does move on he will be able to display his skills to someone who appreciates flair, skill, finesse, subtly and creativity.

See you later SAF!

Wherever he goes, good luck to him. He has been an exemplary professional even when he is not playing.

Dimitar is class. As a player he is extraordinarily talented, with great technique and skill. Like a fully loaded Teddy Sherringham. He is wonderfully creative, an artist with a ball at his feet. United play with momentum, wave after wave of attacks, breaking down resistance, generating mistakes in the opposition defence, that often produce goals. Berbatov gives us more creative options when the game is tight. His passing ability and dribbling skills in tight places is a joy to behold. I love watching him more than any other player, simply because he is so different. He can be enigmatic at times. I tolerate that in the same way I put up with Nani's inconsistency. Both are great players with very different temperaments.
Dimitar is also class as a person. A thoroughly decent man and a good servant to this club. He has not complained at the treatment he has received, the bench time, when he has been overlooked in big games. He is not usually the kind of striker that Fergie normally goes for. In a momentum driven attacking style he prefers the Hughes, Cole, Van Nistelroy, Rooney,Welbeck type of forward. Maybe that's the reason we have not been able to fit DB into the team more often.
He can score goals and we have needed them. Though I hate to say it, I think he should go and find a club that appreciates who he is and the unique contribution he brings to the team. He will always be remembered by me for his class, both as a player and a person.

Did not the above mentioned clubs ask for one of SAF's favourites like Evans or Fletcher.

I am gutted to think Berba may be sold. We need him to beat the tough teams, I mean in the Europa Cup.

On the other hand Berba could retire with the type of salary Anzhi could offer him.
