Sir Alex Ferguson: Wayne Rooney response can fire Manchester United

Manchester United celebrate against Wolves

Sir Alex Ferguson hopes Wayne Rooney can reignite Manchester United's season after the striker's brace in the 4-1 win over Wolves.

Rooney and Nani (two) fired the Reds back to form after a difficult week in which they were knocked out of the Champions League and lost skipper Nemanja Vidic to injury for the rest of the season.

Rooney took his tally to 11, having scored nine in his first six games, and the United boss can talk optimistically about what lies ahead.

"Wayne in particular, does go in spurts," Ferguson said.

"He scored nine in the early part of the season. Now we are going up to an important part of the season, if we get the goal ratio again, it puts us in good fettle."

Ferguson was delighted with the response of his players, arguing that for some, the shattering Champions League experience will turn out to be a positive.

"We will take a lot of stick from critics and even from people we thought were perhaps on our side," he said.

"This was the right response. Some of the football was fantastic."

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy backed Ferguson to haul United out of the mire after watching his side beaten.

"I don't look at Manchester United in a different way," said McCarthy.

"I can't remember when Manchester United, at Old Trafford, was an easy task.

"All the hype and talk about their demise is nonsense.

"They have had a tough couple of results. They have been knocked out of the Champions League.

"But they will get back again because they have got really good players and a whole load of young players, who are developing."

What do you think? Have your say.

Our best striker needs to play in the final third and must be supported in the play accordingly. Play Berbatov behind Rooney in this next series of games. We need him match fit and contributing. These games are tailor made to get him on track and playing with confidence. He should be fit to play this week.

Okay, In the art of fairness, I'm really pleased with the performance today, and after a terrible result in midweek, it's nice to actually go out, have a few drinks, and be happy on a Saturday night. Of course, this does not change the way I feel about Evans, nor that I feel the jury is still out on Welbeck, nor that we Desperatley need to sign another Midfielder in Jan, but for tonight, I'm content!!
It's still going to take some incredible effort to win any silverware this season, and we may have to just accept we aren't good enough over the coming 5 months, but I know what could start to make it up to us, the fans, FA CUP 3RD ROUND, CITY, THEIR BACK YARD......REVENGE.......:-)

Good respond from the lads that's exactly what is needed after the midweek disaster. Roll on Boys.

I would almost go as far as far as to say that we played as well today as the early season games, at least we were going forward with some idea and purpose plus shooting the ball. which we dont do enough of

thought there were no weak links anywhere, just a pity we couldnt have been as fired up for the game against basle as well, but then I think the current squad needs a kick up the #$%^ every so often

thought the much maligned jonny evans had a very solid game,

now lets hope chelsea can do us all a favour on monday afternoon

a much better result after far too many poor performances from a club as big as Manchester united

maybe this will be the stepping stone to a really good run of form especially rooney who needs to be scoring almost every week

well done you reds

seems that this man is way smarter than many anti-man utd fans, who were predicting a 7th place finishing for us this season. shows that it's not exactly been a great day for the haters today.

if we can give performances like this against city and our other next opponents, that would be great.

proud to be a rag, united till i die......

i think saf was referring to keane when saying we're getting stick from people we thought were on our side.keane should concentrate on sorting his own career out instead of taking shots at us.like i've said never as good as robbo.

He's back to praising Rooney. We know Nani and Valencia and maybe most of all Rio were pivotal in this win.
Valencia sent in so many crosses which we could not convert. Carrick's attempted header would have been the goal of the year missing narrowly. His form has improved but he is scared of being tackled, that is on reason he is not holding up the ball and doing his end of the work like Jones Valencia and the others.
Rooney had ten attempts and scored two, Nani three and scored two. The latter was totally unselfish.
Are you aware Rooney has no assists to his game this season. How we gone downhill.

Watched the RM vs Barcelona match and was amazed at the quality and pace of the football. It was like watching Carrick speeded up 1.5x. Real Madrid pressed Barcelona so much in the first 20 minutes and rattled them but of course they couldn't keep it up and in the end the score was a fsmiliar one.

For Utd to reach such levels they need much pacier, technically-adept players. Indeed it sounds a decade or two project but the template is there for all to see.

After a bad week that was the kind of performance and result we needed. 12 points from the next 4 games over Christmas and we'll go into the new year in good shape.

Rooney did not play well, his mind was elsewhere. Nani was man of the match, I hope he will not leave us like Ronaldo

wayne seems to have self confidence issues, most bald people have. did work on willie thornes loft conversion about 10 years ago and he said he went to pieces at the televised tournaments because he was worried about the tele lights shining on his chrome dome. a lot of talented young footballers have not improved once they started to lose their locks, andy ritchie, johhny metgod , cambiasso etc.exceptions being zidane who had a tuft at the front and didnt realise he was bald until recently when his wife saw him from the top deck of a bus and sir bobby who was not actually bald but just liked that particular style. if cooleen gets wayne a real good old fashioned rug for christmas number 20 could well be in the bag, on a less positive note phil jones looks a bit sparse for 20.

More Welbeck than Chicharito SAF!

Rooney has been played out of position and too deep for far too many matches, as a consequence his goals; confidence and determination have dropped. He should be played up front with Hernandez (when fit) or Berbatov (Welbeck and Macheda are a waste of time). This is what you get when you don’t have quality midfielders behind you. Regardless of whether Anderson or Clevely are injured or not; we still need 2 quality midfield players! Jones is playing out of position in midfield; he is a back 4-player and always will be! Against supposed weak opposition he will be okay, against quality teams and in particular quality midfielders, he will be running all over the place! We also need a quality right back, for me Rafael gets injured too much! Playing Jones or Smalling at Right back is wasted.
It’s also about time that SAF started looking for his replacement. There are not too many quality Managers/Coaches about to just walk in, take over and be successful. I would like to see somebody brought in as a number 2 under SAF, with the idea of familiarising themselves with the culture and expectations of the club. Pepe Guardiola at Barcelona comes to mind!

Getting knocked out of the champions league was maybe a blessing in disguise as I could`t handle to lose another final. It will have given our players a good kick up the backside, though I must say our passing has to improve.Floating balls up front hoping someone can get to it will never do against a Barcelona side we want to overpass. But when any challenge Fergie has had to face he has always won,so lets sit back and enjoy this one.Fans complaining? Well this has to be expected when a club becomes so big, vast worldwide coverage, massive sponsorship and the largest fan base in the world brings larger demands and expectations. The same would happen if Rolls Royce engines started failing, they have built up a reputation and now have to keep it,regardless of who is in management or who owns them.Lets win the league and F.A. cup up United.

Attention removorators one for you!
2 goals in 9 games world class everything is ok now well I’m glad we don’t won’t to meet a poor side in the fa cup like last year bring it on you done the world class wolves in your own back yard well done
Looking so much to putting you in your place AGAIN! Keep up the good work united we need you back at full strength it make it so much easier for us coz you get all cocky when you win a couple of games against easy opposition.

good win against Wolves, more United's range. Basel was a step too far.

It wasn't all about Rooney..Nani, Carrick, Jones and Valencia were the real heroes against Wolves..don't understand why it has to be Rooney all the time..

So dear Lord Ferg, all must be forgotten, eh? The inept, lame performances against Stoke, Liverpool, Newcastle. Sorry displays against Benfica ( twice), Basel ( twice). The horror show against Man City..????? You are finished and as a man of honor, please accept the inevitable reality. You have taken Man Utd as far as you could. Now your judgment is suspect ( you think Evans is good, Park/Fletcher/Carrick/Ferdinand are Utd-class players and Gibson/Macheda/Diouf should stay), your tactics are old=fashioned and stale. Which top team plays with multi-wingers? I am sorry but if nothing dramatic is done now, Man Utd will soon become the Liverpool of last 20 years.

it doesn't take much for the "fans of United " to jump back on the bandwagon. A victory over Wolves @ home changes nothing! That was not Barcelona they beat. This team needs an overhaul and it will not happen until the summer, as long as SAF is in charge they will be competetive no matter who is on the field but as fergie gets older I think he needs to lose his ego and start looking at assistants that are better able to help him tactically but more importantly if he is to remain cheap and not pay for world class players then he must build a scouting staff second to none to find the next generation of world class players and I don't mean signing 5 year olds! Great article in the Mirror today by brian Reade, it's worth reading.

Was an awesome result yesterday. We finally scored more then on goal. However it wouldn't shock me if Fergie now thinks were ok as a squad, that there is no need for improvement. We beat a team who fights to stay in the premier league every season so i wouldn't get to hyped up. I watched the classico last night and was amazed by the amount of pace/skill/creativity/class i saw. Actually made me kind of happy we went out to Basel because if we met on of them in the last 16 it would be even more embarrassing then being knocked out by Basel. Anyway let's hope Chelesa can help us out 2mz and we can land on top come January !
