Amongst Manchester United's FA Youth Cup class of 2011 are three shining gems who could hit the Old Trafford big time. MEN Sport's James Robson profiles the trio.
Paul Pogba
Age: 18
Position: Midfielder,
Born: Lagny Sur Marne, France
Few prospects have generated as much excitement as Pogba when emerging from United’s academy. An elegant and powerful midfielder, he has already prompted comparisons with his countryman Patrick Vieira and is seen as the long-awaited successor to Roy Keane as a genuine midfield general.
Even before playing a key role in last season’s FA Youth Cup winning side and making his first team debut this term, Pogba hit the headlines following his move from Le Havre.
The French side were initially angered by the nature of his move to Old Trafford in 2009 – but their complaints were dismissed by FIFA.
It left United free to sign one of the hottest prospects in Europe – and his development since joining the Reds has only justified Sir Alex Ferguson’s determination to snap him up.
With an excellent range of passing and already a reputation for scoring spectacular goals from midfield, he looks set to be the jewel in Fergie’s crown.
Will Keane
Age: 18
Position: Striker
Born: Stockport
For all the success Ferguson has had in developing youth at United, he has struggled to produce a genuine top-class centre forward.
Danny Welbeck looks like he could prove the exception to that rule, and there are still hopes for Federico Macheda.
Now Keane is getting Old Trafford insiders excited – particularly after some outstanding individual performances in last season’s march to FA Youth Cup glory. The England youth international scored three goals in the two-legged final victory over Sheffield United, while in the semi-final, he scored a hat-trick against Chelsea.
But Keane is much more than just a poacher. Intelligent and incisive, he is also a creator of goals, with an impressive touch and vision.
His biggest challenge will be getting enough opportunities at first team level.
With Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda all ahead of him, it could be some time before he gets the chance to show if he can make the step-up.
Ravel Morrison
Age: 18
Position: Midfielder
Born: Wythenshawe
Yet another star of the FA Youth Cup-winning side, Morrison has been thrilling regular watchers of the academy and reserves for some time now.
Combining outrageous technical ability with an end product – either through goals or the final ball, he has long-been touted as a genuine star in the making. Off the field problems have threatened his progress – but when it comes to sheer talent, Morrison is one of the most promising prospects in English football right now.
His dribbling skills leave opponents with twisted blood, while he also knows the way to the back of the net, as he proved with two goals in the second leg of the Youth Cup final against Sheffield United.
Few players have got Ferguson so excited, with Morrison first coming to attention of United fans when playing as a 15-year-old in the Youth Cup.
He made his first team debut against Wolves in the Carling Cup last season but success will depend on his temperament.
United know they have someone with the potential to emulate such academy graduates as Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes – but the way he is handled from here on in will determine whether Morrison becomes a star or a wasted talent.
Which is the brightest prospect? Have your say.

u see blue bitters we actually PRODUCE our own players we don't buy them for 38 mil pounds.. so stop calling us rubbish. UTID
probably be pogba because according to reports will not be signing a new contract and will play regular first team football somewhere else. here he will be stuck behind the ever worsening fletcher and carrick
Pogba is, if the media is to be believed refusing to sign a contract which at 19 means he doesnt want to play for the club a situation which will get worse as he goes on, hopefully its not true and he signs and becomes a regular in the first team, with Morrisson we have the makings of a fantastic midfield pair for years to come and to sort out what is a glaring hole in the centre of the team, hope Ravel can oversome what appear to be some pretty serious problems off the field. Tunnicliffe also deserves a mention as a future midfield player he looks as if he is a great player in the making
Finally Keane looks fantastic striker, his development should see him arrive on the scene of the first team soon, we have some good strikers already, article excludes Berba has he left the club?
Ravel if and it is a big if he can sort his head out.
What about Ryan Tunnicliffe?
The thing that impresses me about Will Keane is his coolness in front of goal. He does not rush or panic - let's hope he can continue to produce that at a higher level.
Of the three you would suggest Pogba has the most likely chance, although it has to be said that Will Keane is doing a great job of letting his feet do the talking.
Morrison... well, like everyone has been saying, skill and ability to burn, but a terrible attitude off field. The fact is there couldnt be a better time to get a chance in the United midfield, so if he just concentrated and cut out the silly personal antics, this time next year we could have him and Cleverley doing the business weekly.
Its all for him to achieve or loose, but it would be great to have another manchester lad in the team!
Paul Pogba, Ravel Morrison, Will & Michael Keane, Ezekiel Fryers, Ryan Tunnicliffe are all wonderful talents with great Manchester United careers ahead of them, the 6 will be United stars long into the future.
Played against morrison. - I can't stand the lad.
I think it is obvious we need to get back to 'winning nothing with kids'. The Carricks of this world just aren't cutting it and it would be a massive injustice if these bright talents are allowed to leave because their progress is being halted by under performing donkeys. I think it is unfair to write Fletcher off and Anderson still has some time to prove himself I think but we are lacking good attacking and defensive midfielders... surely there must be something we can harvest from a trio of Cleverly, Pogba and Morrison? Shirley Shirley Bassy!!!!
The fact Fergie isn't promoting them tells me he doesn't have faith in them yet and therefore they mustn't be good enough yet. So I suppose we will all just have to be happy watching Carrick for a wee bit longer yet.
PS... I think it is quite funny that in the list of strikers who Keane is currently behind, Berbatov is not even mentioned. Has he slipped that far down the pecking order?
I wouldn't be surprised to see Pogba follow Pique's path and leave the club at the end of the season.
In the season before he left, Pique couldn't make the United team despite a prelonged injury crisis which saw our top 3 centre halves missing, and he was behind even John O' Shea in the pecking order. He finally got a game in Europe when he replaced yet another injured centre half during a game and was magnificent, instantly stiffening a somewhat shaky United at the back. However, it was too late by that point - he left at the end of the season and within two years he was one of the best in Europe.
Please let's not make the same mistake with Pogba - give him some games in some of the more safer home games before it's too late. He can easily be given a little licence to learn by the odd game in a central midfield of three with a deep lying Rooney.
Our midfield is utterly devoid of creativity and thrust. Fletcher seems to have lost a yard of pace, Anderson is hit and miss, Carrick is well... Carrick, the wonderful Giggs is nearing the end and that just leaves us Cleverley.
I really thought with Anderson, Cleverley and Giggs missing and Carrick not match fit, we might have seen one of the most exciting young midfielders in world football get a game at home against defensive-minded Sunderland but he didn't even make the bench!
I would like Fergie to show some bottle as he did back in the mid nineties and show a bit of faith with the likes of Pogba and Morrison in particular. These boys are talented and need to be playing at the highest level to fulfil their potential. Two years ago I said Cleverley should be given more opportunities and being a local lad he was willing to bide his time, Morrison may well also be prepared to wait, but the rumours are already starting about Pogba being unsettled, which is understandable seeing as he's not a local lad.
If our midfield was top quality I'm sure these young lads would be happy to wait their opportunities, but most of us can see major surgery is required to our midfield, so if we're not prepared to buy, these kids should be given a proper opportunity to show what they can do. Come on Sir Alex what have we got to lose.
dancing pants; now we know where you got your name from. .morrison must of left you in a right mess
These boys need some first team opportunities. If they were not brought on in some of the games we were romping away though, what chance do they have when we are eeking out 1-0 wins. We need two or three of these to break through. I suspect Arsene would have given them some first team action by now. What do we have to lose? Ok, so its huge to miss out on Champions League, but its not like the money is being invested in the team. Either buy some class midfielders, or go with the youth. I say roll the dice and bring them in gradually one at a time.
Why doesn't SAF blood some of these youngsters? I think the answer is pretty straight forward. The way this shower is playing at the moment there is never a game where United have total control and can bring these kids in for the last 15 - 20 minutes. United is invariably struggling to hold on the the small lead that they may have.
It's an egg and chicken situation. SAF stated recently that so long as 8 of the 11 are playing well they can carry the other 3 and still win. I don't think he's right because they are just not good enough unless everyone is playing well. But, if he really believes that then why not try one of them - you should be able to tell within the first 30 minutes if they are up to it in any particular game; if not that's what the bench is for.
They'll get frustrated and leave at the first opportunity if they are not given the chance. He's got 8 games before the transfer window - that should be enough time to try 1 or 2 to see if they can make it or if additions have to be made.
Personally, I would rather try them for the whole of the season and look to summer and risk this season as far as the title is concerned (in any case it is definitely City's to lose) to know exactly what is needed in summer. They either have it or they don't - if SAF doesn't know which (and he should) then try them and prove it one way or another.
To my thinking if he doesn't play them he doesn't believe in them so should go out and buy but if he does, give them the opportunity to play and learn from their mistakes. At least there would be some entertainment in the games - I think watching kids make progress can be good to see.
Great to see we have real superstars in the making at youth level and I am sure, they will develop as legends at Old Trafford under Fergie. Paul Pogba and Morrison must be given more playing time starting off with a start against Crystal Palace on 30 November 2011 in the Carling Cup match. They should also be given cameo sub roles when we are thrashing teams just to make them feel they are wanted at this great club.
I am also very suprised that Berbatov and Mame Diouf are not even mentioned in the list of strikers!! Have they both left Manchester???
no doubting their natural ability. taking it to the next level is increasingly hard at the top teams in the prem. every game in the leauge is life or death and young lads are finding it harder and harder to get the run of games they need for rythm and confidence.slightly more specific to united is players who have broken into the team in the post querioz era have not improved from their debut years evans nani anderson rafael fabio obertan, maybe thats how theyre made but rossi pique have progessed much further. tom c and wellbeck made great progess on loan and look like they are the real deal as do de gea smalling and jones. if these lads stagnate there really is something wrong.
Watching the Youths last year, you couldn't fail to be impressed by these guys, plus Larnell Cole, Ryan Tunnicliffe, Tom Thorp, Michael Keane and John Cofie. I'm not sure I understand the reluctance of SAF and his team to 'fast track' some of these into the first team. To be honest, we've over-achieved over the last 18 months and we certainly appear to need some refreshing through the team - if the club management see that, why can't they take a chance? Paul Pogba never seems overawed by any situation he's thrust into - is it not possible to give him a little run to see if he settles. SAF always was a guy who knew how to bring youngsters on but, if Tom Cleverley is anything to go by, you need extensive loans before you can be considered with United. Ravel Morrison is a tricky customer and, unlike most of our midfield players, can actually play a telling pass in the opposition's third - maybe first team football will 'mature' Rav quicker than currently - he would, I'm sure, get us all excited!!
we re man utd the future is bright, with pogba, morrisson and kean, these re powerful lads they re going to cary man utd success in mear future.there also some lads in united disposal who re coming through the rank's common man utd let tell the we re united.
The three of them plus R. Tunnicliffe and Larnell Cole have been receiving rave reviews for a while but as most fans will have noticed, Ravel Morrison has not even made the reserve team recently. If he was fully fit it can only mean that he's no longer first choice in his position for the reserves. What does that make him for the first team? Moreover, he was not of the three players training with the first team squad lately ! Could it be that United have had enough of his off field behaviour ? Or is Fergie trying to give him some strong signals in an attempt to make toe the line ? The other player that is causing concern is P. Pogba who is recognised by everybody as a future star. The info that has retained my attention is that he was one of the three youngsters training with the first team squad but only Cole and Fryers have been named in United CL squad and not Pogba ! Is it because of his contract issues with United ? Whilst young players must not be allowed to blackmail the club, what would United be prepared to pay the same Pogba if say they were trying to lure him from another team ? United should do everything to retain him as he will soon be their best asset. Another point is, as much as United boast about giving young players their chance, Morrison, Pogba and Fryers should have been given far more opportunities in the first team already. If some fans do not agree with me, I'll just ask them to have a look at Chamberlain at Arsenal. Do you think he would have had so much first team football at United ? Aaron Ramsay is another example. Owen, Carrick and Diouf ( If Fergie does not believe in him long term ) should have been released last summer to make room for these youngsters in the squad. At 18 years of age they need first team action ( 15 to 20 mins ) regularly in order to make the next big step in their career.
I'd like to see them given a chance from the bench when the situation is right. I couldn't see the point of putting Diouf on there last Saturday when it's clear that he's not going to make it with us.
If you're good enough, you're old enough e.g. Rooney, Wilshire, Jones when they first came into the Premiership.
Sometimes the really talented have to be stretched and not left to play within their comfort zone. Obviously it depends on their character and confidence but the coaches and manager should know who can step up.
Looks like Pogba wants away, which is a great pity as this lad has real promise. Wonder why he's unhappy at OT?
as a blue i truely admire utds youth policy, utd do there homework on kids, and never make a rash decision, morrison is a truely great prospect, hes not the biggest of players but that is why i admire utd,s acadamey so much, they place ability before all else,i have 3 sons all playing regular football ,2 at acadamey level and i would chose utd over city liverpool everton any day of the week, saf is a genius at blending youth with experienced players and no club looks after there youngsters as utd do.I hate to say it but they are years ahead of any other english acadamey, the introduction of scholes as a coach is also a master stroke.
Havn't seen musch of the other two but Paul Pogba looks really good. Hopefully we can tie him down to a new contract and Ferguson can get him some first team opportunities. If he can't, then Pogba should get loaned out to a premiership side to maintain and speed up his development. He could then break in to the first team or get a lot more opportunites next season.
The truth is, none of these lads could be any worse than who we are using in midfield at the present.
Just like to consider this fabled academy belt that oft gets used as an excuse for not signing players these days I think its a shield myself as we dont have the funds ,since the famous class of Beckham and Co (and what a class) who really has there been Fletcher, O Shea maybe hardly world beaters dont get me wrong would love this current crop to do well but I think maybe we should look at the facts. The likes of Barca/Madrid/Munich and City will stop at nothing for success in terms of spending not saying I agree with it and I think trying to grow players from within is commendable but my personal opinion is that these players might be a couple of seasons away from where they need to be so we need to spend to keep up in Europe and even in PL these days as you can bet City and Chelsea will be spending. Just an opinion would like to see things work out and hope SAF has his sights on some real quality for next season I am hopeful rather then confident of silverware this year
