Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has announced his retirement from international football with Serbia.
His decision follows Serbia's failure to qualify for Euro 2012 with Vidic missing a crucial penalty in their final group game, a 1-0 defeat to Slovenia.
"I feel, after 10 years of playing for my country, it is the right time for me to stand aside and allow the younger players to come through," Vidic told
www.mautd.com.
A statement from the Serbian FA thanked the defender for his service and insisted the door will always be open for him to return to the national side.
The United captain, who turned 30 last week, played 56 times for his country and scored two goals.

I sure liked the look on his face when Evans got sent off abd I hope he had a lot to say to Sunday's players.
I have a feeling SAF is behind this. It was odd to say the least that Vidic did not play or even make the bench against City, but played for Serbia in the last international and was considered OK to start in midweek (granted against much weaker opposition).
Perhaps that's a conspiracy too far. Perhaps the player feels he is starting to pick up a few too many little injuries and that a rest during international breaks will help him to play more games for United every season and extend his playing career.
It's good news for us, either way. I would like to see Rio do likewise. We need those two fit and firing again as soon as possible.
