The ex-United duo lined up together in the Black Cats defence for Saturday's 1-1 Premier League draw at Liverpool, in which Brown demonstrated exactly why manager Steve Bruce was so keen to sign him this summer.
Like the 31-year-old Brown, Bardsley began his career at Old Trafford and he is delighted Ferguson decided his new team-mate was surplus to requirements.
"Sir Alex makes some decisions and this one has come in favour of us because if Wes plays like that, he's up there as one of the best centre-halves in the country," Bardsley said.
"I have played with him before and I know what he can do. When he plays like he did on Saturday, he's top-class.
"He's got unbelievable composure and in the air he wins everything. Overall, he's a fantastic player and a great lad as well.
"We have just got to keep him on the pitch. He's had a few injuries in the past, but he's made a tremendous start."
United are already short of options in defence with Rafael, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand injured after Sunday's 2-1 win at West Brom, although Ferguson swooped to bring in Phil Jones from Blackburn over the summer.
Could United's decision to let Brown leave come back to haunt them? Have your say Tweet

Why would the decision to let Brown leave come back to haunt us? If we'd have kept him we couldn't have got Jones. There are limits to the size of squads, you know. We can't just keep everybody. He only started 4 league games last season.
i watched the game wes was a rock at the back and shown how ridiculously overpriced carrol is along with downing and henderson.75 mill for three players who are only worth 33 mill, nice one king kenny.long may you continue.
Never. Phil & Smalling are better than Him!
I hope we don't regret moving Wes on. He has fantastic experience and was a brilliant back up player for the defence.
i made a comment yesterday why hasn't it been posted ?,plus other comments on other issues have not been posted.
Well Done Brown. You gave a really good performance against Liverfool. Sad thing you cant get a place in Man Utd line up. For me you're still 1 of the best centre back and also good as a right defender..
I really like Wes Brown and John O'Shea both good players and excellent squad members with loads of experience of top level football, could the latest injury hoodoo prove it was a bit premature to sell them. Wes was brilliant at Anfield on Saturday.
