De Gea has been chosen to fill the vacancy created by Edwin van der Sar's retirement despite what many felt was a shaky performance in last weekend's Community Shield encounter with Manchester City.
It is not a view Ferguson shares. Although the United boss accepts De Gea got his footwork wrong for Edin Dzeko's second goal, he absolved the former Atletico Madrid man of any blame for the opener, even though it was suggested he should have punched David Silva's inswinging free-kick away from danger.
"When free-kicks come in and defenders are converging, the goalkeeper has no chance," said Ferguson.
"The delivery was so good.
"It was interesting there was no criticism of Joe Hart for our first goal, yet it was exactly the same type of goal.
"All it needs is a fraction of a touch and the goalkeeper is dead. If he comes for it, he ends up looking silly.
"De Gea will be fine. He will play on Sunday. That is the reason we spent £18million on him."
Ferguson reported the 20-year-old has made rapid progress with his English lessons and said goalkeeping coach Eric Steele is confident there will be no communication problems at the Hawthorns.

Good luck David , enjoy your time here at Manchester United and long may u be top dog !!
Go get em boy !
i agree with saf, hart conceded exactly the same type of goal for our first yet not a mention of it.and i've just watched goals of the season and hart again against liverpool let in carrols long range effort just the same as de gea.like i've said on here before there's no such thing as a great YOUNG gk.of course he'll make mistakes but lets give the lad a chance the critisism is unfounded.good luck on sunday senor david.
A correct and sensible decision. End of!
United 'til I die!
Unsurprising that David starts at West Brom given the club needs to show faith that the £18m was well spent. We are fortunate that, in Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos we have two excellent keepers to step in if needs be.
i jst pray there aint no communication problem at the hawthorns...manchester is RED
Number 1 shirt in his possesion say no more
After two mistakes last weekend, how many this for the new taibi?
Even the greatest of goal-keepers concede goals like that of David in Wembly. Of note is messi's strike in CLF beaten Van d Sar and Rooney's strike @ Stamford bridge in the same CLF beaten Cech. So much expectations are being put on the lad and that is really bringing bais opinion.
Let him make mistakes while still early in the season ....
Good luck and play hard!!

Haha, Ferguson is funny. Lindergaard never had a chance of becoming Manchester Uniteds number one, despite the fact that he has had more gelling time with the squad and has put in some descent performences. All Lindergaards' talk of fighting for the spot was for nothing. When Ferguson has made up his mind on a first choice goal keeper that is it. Same happened with Van der sar and Kuszczak. In the few odd games Kuszczak got, he would play his heart out and perform excellently well hoping that he could overtake Van der sar, but he was always going to play second fiddle (understandably, Van der sar was amazing!).
Now we have De Gea, even though he hasnt yet performed well, the same is going to happen to Lindergaard. Again, I think Ferguson is making the right choice. When De Gea's confidence goes up we'll see the best of him
My team for the away game, against West Browmich Albion, at the Hawthorns, on Sunday 14th August 2011, at 16:00 would be as follows (with a regular 4-4-2 formation):
De Gea, R.Da Silva, Jones, Vidic, Evra, Nani, Carrick, Anderson, Young, Owen, Rooney. Substitues: Lindegaard, Smalling, Ferdinand, Cleverley, Berbatov, Welbeck.
My captain would be Vidic, with free-kicks being taken by Anderson, right corners by Young, left corners by Nani, and penalties by Rooney. I think'll we'll run out comfortable, 8-1 winners, with the scorers being; Rooney (penalty), Owen, Young, Anderson (free-kick), Nani, Vidic, Jones and Smalling.
West Brom will try and give him a hard time no doubt about that so he will have to be on his toes. God the lad is only 20 and looked a bit nervous for me last week against the bitters. New language..new country...new club...all going to take time but i think the lad will come good in the end. Should have a quiet day tomorrow...i hope !!!!! Come on boys..going for a safe 2-0. L.U.H.C.......................................................................
As the Boss said "He will play on Sunday. That is the reason we spent £18million on him" and I completely agree. Why would someone pay that kind of money for a GK just so that he could warm the bench. Give the 'poor' lad a chance will you...
De Gea and 18 mill !!! it´s a laugh. Mr. Ferguson really screwed this one, De Gea will cost ManU the championship this year :-(
Go for Lindegaard, he´s the man for ManU
Poul, Denmark
Still will put Lindegaard ahead of De Gea, but I will support De Gea 24/7.
nice to see the Barcelona wannabis happy
Let's get behind the lad he looks top drawer. Come on united .....
Good luck today De Gea have a gud un i know from what i ve seen since november you will be a great at O/T
FOREVER IN OUR SHADOW
He did look nervous against city and obviously should have saved dzeko's shot. If west brom get into shooting positions, I would say shoot on site and test him out. I am sure Hodgson will be saying that, although normally Hodgson concentrates on stopping the other team, so don't see too much in the way of attacking from west brom. Once Utd score, will be difficult not to concede more. Looks like a contolled win to utd to me.
Why mention your wealthy neighbours in every article about your vile club,we all know nited signings are world class while everyone else buys duffers, and heres me thinking the mighty nited are not bothered about noisy lickle city, not half you,re not, the realisation that you are going to being challenged on and off the field obviously grates at you all.Shut it about Manchester's only club and keep your nose out sluralex.
David de Gea is being blamed for Dzeko’s goal at Wembley.
True, it was a poor goal to concede but most critics have been ignoring a couple of important points.
Firstly, Dzeko was allowed far too much room by the defence. He shouldn’t have been allowed to run and find space for a shot. A goalkeeper is entitled to expect that he would have been blocked off, after all he isn’t a Messi, capable of finding a space through any defence.
Secondly, De Gea was initially well positioned, but when it became obvious that the defence were failing and allowing Dzeko to run unhindered, he had to back-pedal rapidly to avoid being where he could have been lobbed. Because he was back-pedalling he wasn’t able to set himself properly for the shot and so was late in his dive.
The headed goal has also been put down to him. I would think that a new keeper playing behind a defence he isn’t that familiar with, and a defence playing in front of a new keeper, will always concede such goals until familiarity means that they know who will do what in similar situations.
A goalkeeper is supposed to inspire confidence for the defence in front of him. Schmeichel did it. Van der Saar did it. But having seen this lad in the first half at Wembley? Mmmmmmm I wonder. City's goals were well taken, despite the fact that the spineless media would admit it. But 18 mill for this lad, when compared to £600,000 for the superb Joe Hart. No contest.......
Good to see the glory hunters filling up the pubs already. Nothing ever changes
Sensational breaking news Man City have asked for permission to play their opening game v Swansea at O.T. this will enable giant screens to be erected inside and outside Wastelands, they have also asked for giant screens to be erected at Lancs County Cricket Club, Heaton Park, Wythenshawe Park and various sites around Manchester this will enable the 250.000+ bitters that flocked to watch the F.A. Cup parade to watch The Massives.
