Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping to wrap up the Ashely Young deal as soon as possible - but the Aston Villa winger will have to win over the United fans if he does move to the North West.
Manchester United correspondent Stuart Mathieson says many United fans have been cold on the mooted transfer deal.
And he also reveals that Sir Alex Ferguson would be prepared to play the waiting game if the deal with Aston Villa hit a sticking point.

No they shouldn't he is not good enough for our team. We should buy Nasri, Modric and Arteta
I am totally underwhelmed by the potential signing of Ashley Young. I believe that the reported £16 million would be much better spent in reinforcing our central mid-field, and that Valencia, Nani, Park and Cleverley can make up a good quartet of wide players for the coming season. If we fall, say, £10 million short of signing world class defensive and attacking central midfield players, Young is a signing that we might live to regret (assuming it is taking place). Get Sneijder and Lassana Diarra, not this average player from The Villa!!
SKY make laugh
headline "betting suspended, jones signs for liverpool"

Jones signs for utd
pmsl
the press hates saf as they don't have a clue...
Dont you just love the Glazers lads, hang on i thought everyone came through the youth team anyway..pwohahahaha.
He seems to be a little big headed! Yes he is an English player but I see him causing problems with his attitude. How many people get the chance to play for a team like Manchester United? Now there is talk of posponing the deal till after the wedding - where did this all appear from? I think any other person would be posponing the wedding!! In my humble opinion he is not United class sorry. SAF has admitted that United lack that certain wow factor, hey does Young make anyone say wow? Not me I am sorry to say. Save the money SAF and get wow factor players. Messi was right we have Rooney who is wow but we lost Ronaldo and Tevez and we need these type of players please. Maybe we should just put our attention on the midfield. Nasri sounds good!
Wow how great (Not)..we sign players like Ashley Young and Phil Jones while Barca are going to buy Snachez and Sneijder being tipped for Chelsea now...I can really see us wiining the Champions League with these type of players next season....It seems we can't attract the best players anymore!
Ashley Young is a very versatile player and versatility is always welcomed at Old Trafford.
'If' Nani is on his way as for Sneijder, and Giggs has 1 season left (2 seasons MAX) then Young would make a very good contribution to the team.
Also consider the Champions League home grown players ruling in that the squad of 25 picked for the Champions League must include at least 8 English players.
Personally i would welcome Ashley to the club.
If he signs, he gets my backing. Good player, dont know enough about him to comment that he is able to step up. I'll leave it in Fergies hands, after all he knows better than me.
Now go and get Sneijder
Does Ashley Young provide an improvement to the squad? Ans: Yes
Does Ashley Young provide an improvement to the team and raise the overall team abilities to a level United require to compete at the very highest level? Ans: No
We have a large squad of "good" players like Ashley Young and do not need more. What we need is players of higher quality (great players), especially in midfield and in particular centre midfield. IMO Young doesn't compare to Sneijder or Modric, or Nani for that fact. Furthermore he has a much inflated price due to being English.
It's a funny old world, how times change! You are looking to buy Ashley Young and Tom (sorry I meant Paul) Jones and little ol City look at the likes of Sergio Aguero.
He'd have been a good signing when he left Watford but I'm with the vast majority who are pleading for big money to be spent on CM's. Gibson & Carrick aren't good enough for United simple as that, I was embarassed to watch Carrick play like a scared rabbit against Barca not that it wasn't totally predictable. De Gea, Jones maybe Young but please world class CM's FFS!
What about the news that United have agreed a deal with Phil Jones? Is he really what we need at this point?
People were saying Valencia wasnt good enough and look how wrong u all were. Mark my words nani and Sneijder will be straight swapped with Berbatov going too and sanchez coming in to cover the positions nani covered and also will cover Berbatovs. Lets not forget we have welbeck and Cleverly coming back too
Phil jones will be an outstanding signing whos having a medical and will hopefully be partly funded by the sell of gibson and brown to sunderland for about 9m. I would sell oshea also as evans has the potential to get better whereas oshea doesnt and both can play anywhere in back 4
Yes they should sign him.
Don't understand all the negativity about Young. Anyone who bothered to watch the latest England debacle last Saturday would have seen what a huge difference he made when he came on - scored a good goal, too. Personally, I think - as Stuart Mathieson said in the podcast - that he ticks a lot of boxes for United. Also, I think it's wrong to see him purely as a wide player. I think he's capable of playing as a second striker just off the front player as well as on either flank. He comes across as a bit of a cocky so-and-so, but if he moves to United he'll soon realise that he's got to step up to a higher level. However, I think he has the talent and self-belief to do that. He actually reminds me of another player who came to us from Villa and did pretty well - Dwight Yorke. Also, I don't think it's a case of buying him instead of Snejder et al; I think it's a case of 'as well as'. If he does come, I think he would do well for us.
Hes a decent player but hes no Alexis Sanchez. He will look average against the top European sides but will impress against the Wigans of the world.
Not sure we really need him. Anyway, Phil Jones is first in.
Hey, If SAF thinks it is a good buy then why should we doubt him, he has got it right so many times. This may well be all news talk and he is not bothered at all but if he really is I'm sure he is looking to be able to field a team that has the same type of players and style to ensure his rotation policy will work and Utd play the same style week in week out. We cannot expect to win major trophies without having a flexible squad.
The noisy neighbours are soooo excited and think they have all the answers now they have won something... just watch them flop because they simply don't have the depth required to play the games required.
I would welcome him if our central midfield was sorted out but just now speculation is rife that Phil Jones is having a medical which would mean with Young and De Gae we are done in the market. If this transpires there needs to be serious consideration about the quality of decisions been made at the club. I mean these 3 are going to cost circa 50M yet apart from the keeper none of them fill a position which I would class as priority at UTD. ie central midfield , but must admit after the treatment of Berba in CL final nothing would surprise me hope the manager can see how bad things are in CM and that we need a top class operator in there
United need another right footed left winger to provide support for the other 2 right footed left wingers we already have at the club.
The question is will sir alex do anything to rectify the glaring problem we have regarding the lack of real quality in the engine room. this part of the team has struggled all season to cope with pressure of any sort. Since the end of the season we have lost a further 2 central midfielders from the roster.
As I said for much of last season, our less inspiring performances came when we had no wide players available, with Valencia injured, Park away and injured and Nani not able to play week-in, week-out.
So, it's no surprise to me that winger has been a priority for SAF. After all, that's where a lot of our creativity comes from.
Should Manchester United sign Ashley Young? No
His biggest asset in relation to what we lack is his deadball. He has pace, is lively, has intelligent link up play all of which we have in the likes of Nani, Park, the twins and Giggs. No harm in having another string to the bow to cover injuries and form and boost competition.
I would be gutted if it meant selling Nani though. Hopefully it just means Giggs is expected to play less.
More to the point: should the Salford based club ask their fans to dig down into the settee and look behind the fridge for any lost coppers? Young is good but only as a decent premiership player, rather than a world beater. Lots of quality players used to express their desire to play for United in a bid to engineer a move, which begs the question: Where are they now? You could all pretend that the Blackburn centre half is the new Puyol, brown is the new black and an un-named premiership player is the new pope but we all know that the party is drawing to a close.....don't we?
