FA Cup special: Manchester United players rated

Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in United training
Andy Mitten, editor of United We Stand and MEN columnist, rates the likely Manchester United line-up:

EDWIN VAN DER SAR: I’m sad he’s retiring in the summer – once again he has been superb this season. Like Fergie, I just wish we’d signed him five years before we did. He is world class and that’s something United fans shouldn’t take for granted given how long it took us to find a replacement for Peter Schmeichel. 8

RAFAEL: He was at fault when United were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich last season. But he is improving every season and has significantly cut down on the mistakes. A hard and aggressive player, he will make the right back spot his for many years to come. 7

RIO FERDINAND: One of the best centre backs in the world without a doubt. How we miss him when he’s not there, which has been all too often in another season of injury concerns. He’s the perfect foil for Nemanja Vidic and would be a 9 out of 10 player every time if not for the amount of games he misses, which is why I’ve had to mark him down. 7

NEMANJA VIDIC: The Player of the Year and his experience in Europe shows every time. I can remember in 2007 when he was rushed back from injury and torn apart by AC Milan. That wouldn’t happen nowadays. A committed leader, when he and Ferdinand are together you always believe we’ve got a chance against anyone. 9

PATRICE EVRA: It’s been a less than spectacular season by his very high standards. He’s been one of the top left backs in Europe over the last few years, but not this season. I thought he was angling to leave in January, but he committed to the club and it’s time for him to raise his game back to the standard we’ve come to expect. 6

ANTONIO VALENCIA: It’s great to have him back, as he offers something that few others can do in United’s squad. Roy Keane always said that the hardest thing to do in football is beat a player – Valencia does that every time he steps out onto the pitch. And his crossing is such potent weapon too. I would like to give him a higher rating, but having missed so much of the season, I can’t. 6

PAUL SCHOLES: An absolute gem and he tends to do well against City, so I hope he  starts tomorrow. He will be an important figure as he will be one of the few Mancunians on display at Wembley. The number of games he plays are obviously limited, but he is used intelligently by Ferguson. I, like most fans, am just glad to see he’s still playing. 8

MICHAEL CARRICK: Made a scapegoat by many fans, but I like him. He’s not reached the levels he managed in his first season at United, but I’ve been encouraged by his form in recent weeks – particularly at Chelsea in the Champions League quarte- final first leg and again on Tuesday. Based on his form in the first half of the season I’d give him a six – but in the last month I’d give him an eight, so I’ll split the difference. 7

NANI: I was surprised to see him omitted from the PFA Player of the Year senior nominations, which may point to the fact that his fellow professionals don’t appreciate the way he plays the game. But you only have to look at his contribution this season – a huge number of assists and his fair share of goals too. He has become one of our most influential players. 8

DIMITAR BERBATOV: The Premier League’s leading scorer, you can’t really ask for any more – but United fans will. You can look at the number of goals he’s scored, but a lot have come in chunks. He can be pleased with his season, but Reds fans would like to see more because we know how good he could be. 7

JAVIER HERNANDEZ: What a fantastic first season. No-one had heard of him last year, but he’s gone from an impact player to someone you would be happy to see start each week. The beauty is, he’s only going to get better. His backwards header against Stoke was the best goal I’ve seen this season and the way he celebrated afterwards showed he enjoyed it just as much as the fans. 8

Chicharito deserves more than 8, he's scored many important goals than any striker in the EPL..UNITED!

It would be good to see Park playing - his energy knocks sides off their stride (esp since our other high-energy player, Rooney, will not be there). Still, hard to decide between him and Valencia, granted.

Scores too low in general - higher marks for Valencia, who has been great since returning, VDS (why only 8 if he is world class?) and possibly Evra (agree not his best season, but lately he has been more of a threat).

Vidic has been great - but sometimes he lets us down (and it does not seem to get noticed). For example, the Drogba goal was all his fault - Drogba just ran past him.....This season perhaps an 8.5?

Silva a 9 and Nani a 8??? have you seen Nani's stats compared to Silvers if nani is a 8 silva is a six.

Valencia - 6? I assume he got 5 for his right foot and the 1 was for his left foot that is only used for standing on. He never tries to use his left foot - not even for a simple 5 yard pass on the floor. He's a good player, but to be great he needs to us both feet - Ronaldo and Nani can both cut in and shoot. Valencia ends up in a cul-de-sac far too often trying to use the right foot when a short left foot pass would keep a move going - he just gets sent back to pass to the defence.
