Senior United officials were furious at how Jamie Carragher managed to get away with only a booking from Phil Dowd for his challenge on Nani that left the winger with a bad gash to his leg.
Carragher sent a message of apology into the United changing room immediately after the game, then waited for the player to emerge to reinforce his sorrow personally.
A picture of the open wound was posted on Twitter by a member of United's staff and the player and United now face an anxious wait to see if he will recover in time for Saturday's clash with Arsenal and Marseille in the Champions League on March 15.
No one from United commented after the game after a media blackout.
What is your assessment of Sunday's game? Have your say.

Hope it's only a flesh wound Nani, we need you.
Can you imagine the reaction if a United player had done that to someone? Contrast the reporting of Carragher to the frenzy over Rooney and they say there is no bias against Manchester United within the media.
Dalgliesh "I've got nothing to say about that incident" Press "Fair enough".
I'm really sad for Nani who is our best player. He should stop his simulations that make the referees never know when he is injured or not
I have already had my say
Nani i hope you get better real soon , we need you more than u know !
Come on guys
YOU are united for goodness sake play like champs !!!
Let us see if there is the same outcry over this tackle from Carragher as there was for Rooney's elbow last week.It is the same situation were the ref saw it and felt that he took appropriate action. It is all good and well saying sorry after the fact but it was a terrible challenge and if Rooney had done that to Gerrard then every media source would be calling for him to be executed by firing squad by now.It amazes me how the haters think that United's success is only because of favourable refereeing decisions,But I guess saying that makes them feel better about their own useless teams believing that they would have won all that United have over the years if only the ref was on their side. All other supporters rejoice if they win one game (against United) but United rejoice only when we win trophies.
Don't like some of the antics Nani gets up to, but in this instance it was a particularly nasty tackle and if anyone else had done that it would have been a straight red. One other point is everyone is saying Rafael should have seen a red but lets back up to Maxi racking Rafaels thigh with an appallingly high tackle and completely got away without any card what so ever and the more I see of Gerard the more I can't stand the man he is a disgrace! However have to hold the hands up we were shocking and they were the much better side......don't know what whinger has to smile about in my paper today but one thing you can bank on is that we will not loose to the gooners next week!
Disgracefull challenge by Carragher who had only one thing on his mind to take Nani out of the game. Even more disgracefull is Phil Dowd who allowed this to happen. Shame on all the Liverpool fans who taunted Nani when stretched off, reminds what happened to Smith a few ago. Just goes to show a lack of class the Dippers show and are.
It will be United and Nani who will be laughing last when we pick up no.19 in May.
Keep the faith, Glory glory Man Utd.
NO COMMENT !!!!!!
Diabolical.
He is a prize plonker that Carragher no doubt about that. Shame the likes of Keano aren't still running around.
I like Carragher, but that challenge was a pre meditated disgrace. How the Rooney McCarthy affair can blow up out of all proportion after rooney clipped his ear with his elbow and how carragher can almost SNAP Nani's leg and nothing barely reported on it, will never fail to bemuse me
If he is to miss some games it will be a big blow. This is when we all need to support our team the most and give them confidence and courage to finish this season triumphant. In the summer we will need transfer activity and bring adequate talent.
Come on fellas, let cheer them up to glory this season, they need it, we need it!
GGMU
Show the picture. Why does it have to be a secret ??!!
Type your comment here...this presents us with a big problem as nani is the only player in the midfield department capable of making and scoring goals at the moment. our central midfield compliment are not exactly prolific when it comes to these particular skill sets of making and taking goals
I've seen the picture, and its a very nasty gash on Nani's legs that's ripped open right down to the bone.
If its only flesh that's ripped then he could be back in a week or two, but if its muscle, then he'll be out for the rest of season i would imagine.
But Carragher can stick his apology for all i care, he intended to hurt Nani, and he did the job. Nani is lucky the bone was not broken, or it would have been a compound fracture as well.
The only apology is Carragher himself and all the classless bin dippers who cheered.
If Nani's out for the rest of the season this could be a big loss... title's loss.
He's the only creative midfielder.
Future ?
If we don't bring (at least) a great midfield player in we'll be sinking in dark ages... Scholes - Giggs are getting older, no future there...
Carrick - Fletcher are average players, no great expectations there...
Gibson, Bebe, Obertan... B-team players...
Watch out...
Liverpool should have ennded up with 8 men Carragher off Maxi Rod off that sparked Raphaels anger and the dirty South American for trying to pull Raphaels hair out of his head.
However their can be no excuse for Fergie who is going down hill fast glorifying signing new contracts for players who would not make the bench at any other club
poor guy that was a bad tackle, but there again it was a bad day all round with united tinkering on the edge of total collaspe my only surpise is that our frailties have taken so long to come to the surface never before have i seen such a comical bunch of school boy errors from a united team surposed to be the bees kness of the prem league, fergie s not buying stubborness may well result in us winning nothing this season he will have to spend big to bring us back to the united we are used to smalling carrick fletcher are not going to win us much hanging onto scholes and giggs is not tye answere either and rooney well i dont think he wants to play for united anymore guy is just turning out going thro the motions but the vibes coming fr
I do not want to hear any excuses from Fergie! O that's good he is not talking! We were beaten on the day by a team who went out with one intention, and one intention only, and that was to win the game by fair means or foul(Which one I will let you decide?) United came off second best in all department's, so yes have a little moan about the rough treatment that was dished out on both sides of the pitch, but then start to take a look at some of the players performance closer to home , that is manchester. We made liverpool look like champions and we looked like chump's. I feel that it is time to go back to basic's, that is if we can remember what basic principles of football are! Stop the moaning and plan for the next game, and stop this the world is against us attitude. Move on.
Good job United decided to blank the media before this game otherwise Ferg would be in the stand for the rest of the season. Thoroughly disappointing week all round. I never thought I'd be counting the days down until Park's return but the last few weeks have proved his worth without him kicking a ball!
On a serious note. How do you nited fans feel about paying Rooney £250k a week of your hard earned dole money? I loved him when he first came to the fore at Everton, I even watched him him make his England debut and thought wow!! Now I just see an average player who scores the odd good goal, like the one against us.
On current for he should really be playing for Blackburn or Hull.

I think Berba, Rooney and Little Pea needs to play all 3 of them. Put Rooney wide and let him come inside. We will still get plenty of width with Evra and Raphael.
Giggs just go inside anyway these days.
Valencia back will also be a great asset. He works his socks off and deliver plenty of crosses!
Fletcher will also need to play, so Carrick or Scholes can not play togheter, at least not as a 4-4-2 duo. He will give steel and determination. We just have to support him and hope he can raise his passing game.
Defence will be alright. Wes is rusty, but that is Fergie's fault. He really did put in a couple of crunching tackles and he is no worse on the ball than Evans or Vidic.
I would like to see him more in the run in. Even at right back as i rate him over O'Shea.
Surely the biggest worry for Reds is Wazza? Nani will recover very soon and is a matchwinner (frustrating at times) but still a matchwinner.
Roo is also a matchwinner, but something is very wrong at the moment.
Those of us who can remember 1986 must surely draw comparisons between the Rooney form and that of Sparky Hughes that season. HE looked committed and came up with the goods now and again - but something was missing. Wazza is exactly the same this season. Sparky had, as we all know, agreed to join Barcelona at the turn of 1986 and it was not revealed until the end of the season. I fear for what the Reds have agreed with Paul Stretford when he "signed" that contract.
I know what I want - the Wazza of last year!!!
about carrick signing a new contract,i thought we were having a clearout at the end of the season i for one was disapointed when heard this news has he's not world class just average, what i would give for van der vart.
