Manchester United 0 Manchester City 0

MANCHESTER United were denied victory at Old Trafford as neighbours City battled hard in defence to keep them out.

Reds striker Alan Smith was sent off for a second bookable offence, leaving his side to try in vain to secure a much-needed win.

Once again United failed to follow up a spectacular result in Europe by failing to get the Premiership points they so badly need to close the gap at the top.

United got off to a flying start and Mikael Silvestre denied a free header by what looked like a tug on his shirt and Paul Scholes then found Louis Saha with a pin-point cross but he was denied first by James and then by Stephen Jordan.

United then had another strong penalty appeal turned down when Antoine Sibierski blocked Saha, allowing Danny Mills to clear.

City nearly caught United on the break but lone-striker Nicolas Anelka's finishing was not up its usual standard.

The traffic was nearly all one way with City rarely venturing out of their won half but a rare Blues raid saw Roy Keane yellow carded for a foul on Willo Flood and from the free-kick, Distin rose at the far post to plant a header at Roy Carroll.

Punishment

Carroll had to be alert as Shaun Wright-Phillips threatened to latch on to Anelka's flick while at the other end James failed to hold Ronaldo's shot and was relieved no red shirt was on hand to cash in on the loose ball.

James flapped unconvincingly at Saha's cross after the Frenchman skipped past Dunne at the start of the second-half but again escaped punishment.

City were defending heroically and Mills just got above Smith to win the ball as the United striker looked favourite to head home Neville's flick.

United split the Blues defence wide open with Ryan Giggs put clear Giggs free but with only James to beat he fired wide.

Distin then got up just to nick Giggs' cross off Saha's head and was relieved to see the ball deflect inches wide of the goal.

As United's frustration increased, Smith's reckless late challenge on Dunne earned him a second yellow card from referee Poll.

Even after that, United might have snatched a winner but Saha headed wide from six yards out.

Was a draw a fair result? Have your say.

Rubbish - We will nothing, overpaid and over rated. I have seen harder fought games in the junior league.

A decent game by United - spoiled by missed chances and a couple of strong penalties appeals dismissed by Poll. But we should not expect anything more from Poll anyway.......

Same old story united just can't find a way through when teams come to old trafford with 10 defenders! Could you see Arsenal letting city get away with a point!

Distin and Dunne were outstanding!! Utd spend B#60M on front men and they still can't score. The empire of rRome is falling!!

After all the hype from the United supporters comments in here, how United were going to slaughter City, a great result for the underdog City.

Incredible. Totally one sided. City did not even try to get out of their box. All parking houses were full up in Manchester so City decided to park in their box. Disgusting bunch of cowards who just sat there taking all the pressure. And KK is so happy with what he saw and so proud of his boys. No wonder they're getting nowhere very fast. COWARDS and happy to be so. As for United players, they did their best and one has to say it's not easy when the spaces are so overcrowded, but I do not understand why Giggs keeps finding himself in the first eleven. He should be left out for good and sold at the end of the season. Bloody hopeless. All he had to do was put the ball in the net but no he had to try and place it in the corner. Was Miller injured in the first half? I'm afraid as far as the title is concerned, it's all over. We'll be lucky to finish in the top five. How we miss Beck's crosses these days. Ronaldo may be good sometimes at beating defenders, but that's about it. His crossing is very poor and loses the ball much too often. I think SAF has to be courageous enough to give some lads from the youth system their chance. Otherwise Kewell was right to say that we are a spent force. Look at the way Chelsea play and one can see the United of five years ago. Look at Robben and one can see what we missed out on. And RVN tells him that he went to the wrong club. What a joke. I'm hoping we'll at least advance in the CL and maybe win the FA cup again for some silverware. If not no matter what he says, the board should get rid of SAF. The man just does not seem to have a clue what to do anymore.

Is anybody surprised by these results any more. I find myself being surprised when we actually win games. It could be argued that we played well today but its a false impression City were happy for us to have the ball and keep sending it out wide knowing that there was no danger of a decent cross coming in. We now lack the ability in midfield to create chances against packed defences. With all our transfer budget for the next 2 years gone, there is no sign of it improving. Worse than not winning though is the fact that we are SO boring. I can take not winning trophies but I cant stand the fact that we have lost the style of football that United have been known for for so many years. This is our club Fergie and I for one want it back. When this disaster of a season is over pack your bags and go!

You cannot break a defence by playing slowly in front of goal, You need to go full speed with accurate passes to disrupt a defence. Keane is going to slowly, he shouts at his colleagues because he deems they are not moving fast enough but he himself is walking when moving to the opponent's area.

It seems that all the good fortune we've had over the last 11-12 yrs has totally deserted us. In years gone by, we'de have been given at least one penalty, or Saha's effort would have been helped into the net or Giggs would have done an Ole and buried his chance but not this year.
Notwithstanding that I thought Keane slowed down the tempo too much (and Scholes as well) and that Ronnie was awful 2nd half (as was Miller 1st half) and we couldnt put in a decent centre for toffee, I've seen us play a lot worse and win.
Perhaps it's also a sign that I had the same feeling after the game that I used to have in the barren 70's and 80's -resigned frustration.I feel that our glorious time at the top this time round is coming to an end.
I watched Chelsea yesterday and it was like watching utd in that you just knew that they were going to score whereas it's the opposite watching th reds.

Excellent team performance but ultimately frustrating. The standard of finishing is not good enough for Manchester United. I dont see a lot of point in singling people out but its obvious that confidence among the forwards is low. On a positive note, other than the finishing, I thought we were excellent. City never looked like scoring and we dominated the game like we used to do in the good old days. I honestly feel that if we continue to perform like that we will play our way back into the title race because the goals will come. One more thing, if I was a City fan I would be both delighted and mortified today as a five nil thrashing would have been a good result for you the way you played. Only a mixture of poor finishing and last ditch defending saved you from humiliation. No doubt there will be several 'just love it' comments but if you continue playing like that for the rest of the season, you'll be just loving going to play the likes of Port Vale and Plymouth Argyle next season. Woeful.

keane = finished, scholes = finished, giggs = FINISHED + USELESS!!!! ronaldo overdoes it and final ball is bad. rooney is overrated a la michael owen after france 98. saha is a french version of andy cole. oh lets not forget that we signed djemba djemba and kleberson but kenyon and ferguson didnt believe ronaldinho wasnt worth B#23 mil. how far behind are we in d premiership?? how far ahead are barcelona of "LOS GALACTICOS" in la liga. its time for a wholesale change at utd. what annoyed me most was the lacklustre way in which they went about playing. no1 showing for the ball, we ended out the wing crossing in aimless ball that was always cleared. and the way these highly paid "stars" simply jogged after the city players on the ball. i thought this was supposed to be 1 of the fiercest derbies around, certainly didnt look like that.

Sadly predictable result and I am just relieved we didn't get mugged in last 15 mins. City mercifully looked exhausted at the end. A few people have said they were cowards for coming to OT to defend but what do people expect of a team down 17th place and with so many injuries? It's up to United to show more savvy, desire and quality to beat them at home! Fergie is carping on about penalies when he should be furious with the team for not killing off City in the first 20 mins and then going on to waste tons of possession. Our set-pieces are non-existent now...simply no threat either from 20 yards out facing the goal or from corners. We had 16 corners! How many of those caused even the slightest amount of panic in the City defence. Maybe one! The midfield was lethargic and unable to step up a gear (have we even got that gear!?) and the crossing from open play was woeful. Very unimpressed by Saha's effectiveness and his missed header at the end was just the final nail! Unreal! That is his sole function! His pass to Giggs was good I admit but Giggs never looked confident even aganst the hapless James! Why not place it in the opposite corner instead of curling it round him on the side he has covered. Keano had a very poor game and looked way off the pace (such as it was) and Smith was stupid in both his tackles (each could have been a straight red). Fergie whinging about his sending off does neithe him or Smith any favours. Totally sick of United stuttering every time Arsenal drop points. They've taken 2pts in 9 yet are STILL 9 pts clear! What is all that about? Chelsea are out of sight and playing quality football now after a slow (but winning)start. There seems to be no 'plan' at the moment with how the team plays and the number of tired long balls up front and the lack of goals is now a crisis. All shows a lack of ideas, confidence and skill. Even when Reds weren't at their top they could score goals. United were always ruthless with the dross teams but nowadays it's a struggle against ANY team, even a City team almost inviting you to score by playing a lone striker! The decline in the United team is all the more depressing because on paper we have some superb players in every department. Spirit and self-belief isn't there now...nor is the aura of a winning team. Most teams visiting OT fancy it now. Been like this for a year or so and I'm not sure Fergie is the man to turn this round. We are now CHASING the likes of erm, Bolton and Everton...Time for a fresh face to manage the club and take these players on and reliase their potential? I'd have said no way after the win against Gooners 2 weeks ago but now I'm not so sure. We're going nowhere fast and the lack of direction seems to be coming all the way from the top.

Paul stop living in fantasy land. that was a dreadful and unimaginative performance by utd. there is only 1 word 2 describe uniteds performances this season. PAINFUL. we beat arsenal because rooney dived, no other reason. lets be honest. not that i dont believe arsenal got exactly what we deserve but this united team is 5 or 6 levels below the standard set in '93, '94, '96 and '99 teams. this is how they were playin approximately 15 - 16 yrs ago and we all know how good we were then!!!

Why are all you all moaning about City beeing defensive, wasn't this exactly how you played against Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final last year, no complaints then was there. Double standards or just sour grapes? B#50m+ of attacking players couldn't score against City reserves.

Paul Mack, please don't concern yourself about us City fans. The aim of the game is not to lose, particularly against a very good team, when we need the points. Unfortunately your bunch of overpaid primadonna's could not put the ball in the back of the net. And before you go on about dominating the game etc, I remember your manager after the bayern cup final admitting you were fortunate but the name of the game is, guess what, putting the ball in the back of the net. You failed to do that and your title aspirations went with them. SAF out Glasier in.

Not a blue, redville. City cowards? I think not. Only 1 team bottled it yesterday and they wore red. By the way, is redville a way of disguising the fact you live in Berkshire.

Same old, same old. Slight feeling of de-ja vu here. Be honest with yourself, anybody that has been watching Utd will know that things haven't been right for a few seasons now. As much as it hurts, UTD ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH at this moment in time to win anything. We are a once great team with very good individual players, we are now an average team. There are a few reasons as to why we're not good enough at the moment, these are in my opinion: -
1. Influx of new players and in transition, rebuilding a team around younger players, building for the future
2. Older players (Great servants) are they good enough? If not get rid and replace with equally good or better players
3. Inconsistent Team selection, need to play together and gel week in week out
4. Stupid team selections and tactics
5. Transfers - Are the players brought in good enough to wear the famous red shirt?
6. Fergie - Has he lost it? Can he control a squad of millionaire superstars? Do we need a manager with new fresh ideas of tactics, motivation etc?
7. Training/Tactics - Why can't we break teams down? Why can't we play as a unit? (No 3)

The list could go on and on. We must have the greatest forward line up in Europe if not the world but some are young and new and will take time to fit in. In Defence we have in Rio a quality defender, definitely the next captain and Heinze is class, GNev's commitment is spot on and the others are filling gaps, Silvestre has his mares now and again. Midfield, Keane is getting on now and can't play every match need to find a successor, can't see how Scholes gets a game, Giggs has seen better days and needs someone to challenge with for his place (Would have had Ronaldinho if Kenyon hadn't messed that up) Ronaldo's still young, he's going to be world class. Djemba isn't good enough, neither is Kleberson, Miller is young, PNev must have run over Fergies Scottish Terrier cos he can't get a game, Need some quality in midfield, get Davids for a few years. Keepers - Can do a job not sure about No 1.
The future is going to be amazing for UTD (fingers crossed) but it is going to take time and we need to have our first 11 out every week for them to gel and play together. Need fresh new ideas and be able to break teams down. We have the firepower, let's unleash it and start to murder teams again. UTD FOREVER

I posted a message before the game saying I was not confident. Are there any lunatics in the asylum that still rate Ferguson?

Paul Mack, couldn't have said it better myself. Frank, you should move mate - we don't need your kind 'supporting' our team. If the header had gone in from saha, you'd have been on here saying 'we're back'. Rough with the smooth, rough with the smooth..

COWARDS my backside -the truth of the matter is we didn,t roll over and make it easy for u - our defending for the ninety minutes was brilliant we let you have the ball and you couldn,t break us down - how many saves did james have to make? you expected to win by 5 or 6 goals instead we came away with a valuable point not bad for your poor neighbours

Paul Mack, get over it man!

We made no attempt to play you. We simply sat back and let you come at us. We soaked up your attacks and your woeful finishing let you down on the 3 clear cut chances that you had.

Don't you worry about the way our team performs. That was a first and last time that CIty will play like that.

Had you watched City at any point in the last 5 years other than derbies, you'd know it was incredibly unusual.

That and the fact that we were missing 6 first teamers, YOU should be ashamed of the way your overpaid, underperforming "stars" performed.

You have no chance of winning the title now, thanks to us and a stubborn performance.

MUFC RULES OKAY!

I knew everyone will come in here and just blindly vent out his frustration on players and manager, but you have to admit United were ultimately unlucky. City defended well but the players were generally unlucky and everything was just missing by a whisker or magically falling to the camping City defence, like that Smith overhead kick, Saha's early chance or Giggs' curling finish, and there were many chances small or great that could have changed the match. On another night it could have easily ended 2-0 or 3-0, it's disappointing but you can't find a fault in Utd's game tonight. Don't read too much into it, because this cannot be sustained for long even if players tried to, goals will come from everywhere eventually. If the chance to win the league flies out of the window this year then it's not the end of world this young team is in a transitional phase and the signs for the future are good. Luck is a big factor, but you only feel it when you don't have it anymore.
