Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves have handed Manchester United a twin boost.
England defender Ferdinand successfully came through a 45-minute reserve workout on Wednesday night and now it’s full steam ahead for a senior comeback.
And his one-time international colleague Hargreaves was given a welcome tonic when Sir Alex Ferguson was able to find a place for him in his 25-man Premier League squad.
Ferdinand’s fitness road from Rustenburg to Stalybridge was completed at Bower Fold and he is now expected to be up for selection when United return to league action against Everton at Goodison Park a week on Saturday.
Reserve team boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed he is raring to go. “There was no problem whatsoever,” he said.
“It was always planned that he would play 45 minutes. I am not sure he needs any more games. Rio is a naturally fit lad.
“Today was about distances and getting tighter to the ball. Now he is available for selection again.”
The 31-year-old centre back’s World Cup was wrecked on June 4 when he collapsed with right knee ligament damage after striker Emile Heskey fell on the Reds star in England’s first training session.
Three months on from that heartbreaking blow for Fabio Capello’s national captain, he smoothly came through the first half of the Manchester Senior Cup against Oldham reserves at Blue Square Conference North Stalybridge Celtic’s HQ.
It was his first outing since the Reds’ final league match of the season against Stoke City at Old Trafford on May 9 and he eased through his return without any problems.
Watched by Paul Scholes, United won 2-1, with Nicky Ajose opening the scoring and Federico Macheda adding the winner. Anderson, who has been out since suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in February, had his second reserve outing of his comeback.
Wes Brown was also playing his second reserve match of the campaign, having not featured at all yet for the first team.
It was a less public piece of good news for Hargreaves, who is still in America doing rehabilitation work after returning to the Vail Clinic in Colorado in the summer.
Hargreaves, whose second anniversary of his last senior start for United comes up this month, was forced back to the States to see specialist Dr Richard Steadman who had performed two knee operations to attempt to cure his chronic knee tendinitis in 2009.
The 29-year-old midfielder suffered a setback on the eve of United’s tour of USA and Canada after working out during the close season. But Fergie was finally able to fit in the injury-stricken £18m man in his squad and, in the end, only named 24 players as none of the seven on loan were included. The Reds boss can also play as many Under-21s as he wishes to beef up his squad.
Had Hargreaves been omitted from the pool he would have been out of the Premier League until the New Year.
United squad

Midfielders: Anderson, Giggs, Park, Carrick, Scholes, Fletcher, Valencia, Gibson, Hargreaves, Nani

Cracking goal for Kiko must find it hard playing second fiddle especialy as unlike Owen or Rooney he knows where the net is.
Anderson will shine this time around.Carlos will help during his ban from Portugal as he knows how to get the best out of these young lads.

If Anderson can come back from injury and start living up to his potential it will be a huge bonus. In an ideal world, a centre mid partnership of Anderson and Hargreaves would be perfect - backed up by Carrick, Scholes and Fletcher. Realistically though, at the moment its Scholes and Fletcher with Carrick as back up. The addition of Defour in January would immensely improve the midfield as he is the all round midfielder - a la Robbo. There is also Gibson...
Defence is looking OK as long as Rio stays fit. Him and Vidic in the centre with Evra and Rafael would be my preference. Backed up by Evans, Smalling, Wes, Neville, O Shea, De Laet and Fabio. A lot of bodies and options.
Also OK for wingers. It seems Giggsy has been reverted to this role as a bit part this season and has done well. Nani and Valencia cover the flanks as first choice, ably assisted by Obertan, Park and Bebe.
Up front, Dimitar has started to show his undoubted quality. Hopefully he can press on and show more of the recent combinations with Rooney. Then there is Hernandez, Macheda and Owen. Owen is a slight worry in that he isnt offering alot at the moment
By the way, Sir Alex has shown strong interest in Phil Jones at Blackburn. Great lad and will be a great defender. He will be a better version of John Terry, believe me.

How sure are you of this 'Defour' move? Or is it just an educated guess on your part? For what it's worth, I do feel he would be an excellent addition to the squad.

"Ferdinand and Hargreaves give United twin boost". In what way has Hargreaves given United any kind of positive news since he has been back in America seeing the Surgeon who operated on him ? Rio yes because he has played 45 minutes and is training again. Hargreaves is still in America !!!!

Rafael..........Ferdinand..........Vidic..........Evra
..........................Fletcher.....Anderson..............
...................................Scholes..........................
Valencia......................Rooney..................Nani
Subs: Kuszackz, Smalling, Carrick, Giggs, Berbatov, Hernandez, Macheda
and still in reserve would be...
Amos - Brown - O'Shea - G.Neville - Fabio - De Laet - Bebe - Park - Obertan - Gibson - Owen - Hargreaves?
And if we went 4-4-2 then take out Anderson or Scholes and replace with Berbatov or Hernandez.

Is a bit of a joke to be honest.
Who would not like a fully fit player of Hargreaves quality but in my opinion
The poor lads days are over and I think eventually he will have to call it a day.
A good squad all in all with the under 21 players as well.

The only surprise is the inclusion of Hargreaves who in my opinion
After a great effort by the young lad will have to call it a day.
There is no chance of Hargreaves coming back as 2 years is to long.
But overall a good squad and blend of under 21 players.
Lets hope they produce the goods.
