Premier League rules: United squad break down

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he may have to leave some big names off his Manchester United squad list come September 1.

New Premier League regulations allow clubs up to 25 players aged 21 or above – which under the phrasing of the rules means anyone born before January 1, 1989.

Clubs can have an unlimited number of players born after that date, though.

Eight of those 25 players must be homegrown, which means they must have spent at least three years registered with an English club before the age of 21.

Under that rule, Owen Hargreaves is classified as a foreign player for United even though he has played for England.

That squad then cannot be changed until the January transfer window opens, apart from in exceptional circumstances.

Ferguson revealed on Tuesday he is in a dilemma over whether to include injured duo Hargreaves and Anderson in his 25.

Here is how United’s squad break down:

Homegrown Over-21s

Wes Brown
Michael Carrick
Jonny Evans
Rio Ferdinand
Darren Fletcher
Darron Gibson
Ryan Giggs
Gary Neville
John O'Shea
Michael Owen
Wayne Rooney
Paul Scholes

Foreign over-21s

Nemanja Vidic
Edwin Van der Sar
Antonio Valencia
Nani
Tomasz Kuszczak
Ji-Sung Park
Patrice Evra
Mame Biram Diouf
Dimitar Berbatov
Anderson
Owen Hargreaves
Javier Hernandez
Ritchie de Laet

Under-21s

Fabio Da Silva
Rafael Da Silva
Gabriel Obertan
Chris Smalling
Federico Macheda
Danny Welbeck
Ben Amos
Craig Cathcart
James Chester
Tom Cleverley
Corry Evans
Daniel Drinkwater
Magnus Eikrem
Oliver Gill
Joshua King
Rodrigo Possebon
Cameron Stewart

What do you think of the squad make up? Have your say.

According to that list we are ok. If the under 21's don't count, we have exactly 25 players including Hargreaves. Unless of course we are signing someone we haven't been told about.

So, all the over 21 players in total is 25. So tehre is no problem.... unless of course we are making a signing.

So we have exactly 25 players then, no problem as long as nobody comes in, in that case injured hargreaves would be the first to go out of the squad. as a second option De Laet should probably either go on loan or be sold

Am I missing something here? There's 12 homegrown players over 21, 13 foreign players over 21, making the 25 senior players allowed, plus under the new rules all of the under 21s are allowed. The squad can include all of the players. Unless of course, I am missing something.

I think there's a new signing coming in, lads.

I struggle to understand why Utd would want to include Hargreaves? There is no doubt before his injury he looked the real deal, but I think we need to be honest with ourselves "is he ever likely to play again, and be the same player?" Given recent history I would say no! he obviously still has problems physically, and thats without any mental issues that he may be experiencing!
Better off getting someone else in and write off his expenditure as an unforeseeable injury! Its a shame but its a fact

As it stands...it's okay but considering Man Utd are planning a come-back in the transfer market...Owen Hargreaves is the weakest link so...that's that! Sorry mate...

De Laet is an excellent prospect - we'll keep him thanks

For an England international to be classified as "Foreign" suggests that somebody in charge here is...how can I put this....a bit stupid.

Or he could leave out Riche de Laet and sign someone.

I'd like to see how the Liverpool/Chelsea/Arsenal squads look under these restrictions...

re: the talk about Hargreaves not being in the squad. It doesn't necessarily mean that we WILL buy someone. It just gives SAF the flexibility to buy someone in the last hours of the transfer window if the clubs desperate to offload players, City, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla to name but four, panic and offer up a bargain. SAF will know what he will do if he is faced with the opportunity of signing, say Benzema and Valdes in the last few minutes of the window.

It's a cracking list of under 21's isn't it... and will be good to see them stretch their legs in the league cup and any potential dead legs we have...

and hear hear to the calls for a new man in the middle to replace Hargreaves - if he was a horse he'd have been served up in a roll with mustard and ketchup by now... just think how pricey that hotdog would be!

Red Rob - The titles are misleading, not the categories. Under the rulings the player has to have been TRAINED within the country before they were 21 (and so counting as home-GROWN), Hargreaves was at Calgary Hills and then Bayern before here at United and so doesn't fulfill the criteria. The new rules are to help promote youth development not nationality bias and they mirror those used on the continent and within European Club Competitions.

Unless there is a new signing, there is no problem with the squad.

As others have said, we are exactly on the limit. Leave Hargreaves out if SAF wants to sign someone.

Sending Welbeck and Cleveley on loan would make no difference under the rules at all. Sending Diouf out would though.

Red Rob after reading your post about our rivals squads and many similar ones saying we are at an advantage over Chelsea, Liverpool and City as we dont have 30 odd players to choose from, i dont really understand this theory. Yes, they have a lot of players to whittle down into a squad of 25, plus any new signings they may want to make, but surely it is a nice problem to have. I certainly dont see how it is going to be a disadvantage to our rivals, they will just leave out the weakest players, and if it means very good players are being left out then stronger ones are obviously being chosen ahead of them.

It's not as if Chelsea will have to choose between Drogba and Anelka who makes the cut is it? It's not as serious as the 3 foreigners rule they introduced in the Champions league in the early 90s which i fell stopped us having a great chance of winning the European cup with one of our best ever teams.

To Red Rob, there was an article in the Daily Mail yesterday about this, and how it will affect the clubs likely to be fighting for the title.

We are the only team with no problems, with exactly 25 senior players, and comfortably over the 8 homegrown players.

Man City are the only other who will be able to register a squad of 25, but they need to sell 8 players, as they have 33 over the age of 21.

Arsenal aren't too far off. They will be able to register 24, 1 homegrown player short.

Chelsea only have 4 homegrown players (5 if Mancienne goes back to the club), so can only register 21 (22 with Mancienne) players at current.

Liverpool are the worst off. They have 5 homegrown players, and only have 15 oversees, leaving them with a senior squad of 20.

Of course, all these teams can still supplement that sqaud with an unlimited amount of players under the age of 21.

Seems simple, 25 places, 25 over 21 players.

If we sign someone then Hargreaves or De Laet will have to be dropped. Sorry Daniel, i can hear you throwing your toys out of the pram from here at the thought of a United squad without De Laet.

If the transfer rumours proves correct then i guess it would be hargo sold, anderson on loan, owen sold...

@ Enzie

It seems there are some things, you are missing about the new rules. You should read Steve333's post on the issues different clubs have.

Here's also a good article about it:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1297855/New-25-man-Premier-League-squad-rule-big-earners-sitting-out.html

So right now, Chelsea can only list 21 players plus under 21s, which is obviously a disadvantage.

I watched SAF's interview about his dilemna on what to do but I did not hear him mention any names. I must have missed that one then eh? The under 21 list does look good indeed and Craig Cathcart needn't go ouit on loan as was thought and said on another thread. It really does not effect us at all unless we buy someone and if there is two to buy then It must be Hargo and Anderson. I would put Diuof out on loan before Ritchie but then who am I. Still it is only until January and SAF will be able to assess Hargo and Andy before then and make up his mind accordingly. Owen H might not ever come back so this ruling could be a blessing in didguise regarding his future though I hate to say that. I still wish him the best of luck.

Tomas, thanks for the link and it is an interesting article, but i still dont feel it is that much of a big deal. A few big names will be left out at City if they are not sold, but that is only because they have better players in their squad. The only thing being damaged will be players morale if they are left out.

It is clear that SAF has been thinking about this new ruling for a couple of seasons now though with how is squad is shaped. How does this effect the cup competitions?
