Reds back in for Ozil

United are set to revive their interest in Germany World Cup star Mesut Ozil.

Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson looked to have slammed the door shut on new buys this week, saying there was no value in the transfer market.

But the news contract talks between Ozil and his club Werder Bremen have collapsed could see Fergie make a dramatic U-turn.

The midfielder will be a free agent next summer after he and the Bundesliga club failed to come to an agreement over a new deal.

Talks ended without a solution according to Bremen’s sporting director Klaus Alofs.

Ozil could sign a pre-contract agreement with a new club in January and leave for nothing at the end of the season.

Bremen do not, however, want to lose out on a financial windfall for the coveted 21-year-old and hope a cut-price fee of £12m might tempt buyers after originally pricing him at £25m.

Meanwhile, Ryan Giggs says it is “dangerous” to rule Liverpool out of making a challenge for the Premier League title this season.

The Anfield club are going through a period of transition with Roy Hodgson replacing Rafael Benitez after they finished seventh in the table last time around.

However Hodgson has already persuaded England midfielder Joe Cole to sign up after his contract ended at Chelsea and Giggs believes their rivals deserve respect.

“Liverpool have a new manager and it is difficult to say what they are going to do, “ said United’s record appearance holder.

“Two years ago they were close to winning the Premier League and you can never write them off. It just depends on how it goes.

“It is dangerous to write off a team with Liverpool’s history. They have won the same amount of leagues as us. You cannot just dismiss that. They are a huge club.”

United are aiming to wrest the crown back from Chelsea and Giggs feels six or seven clubs, including City, will be in the mix.

How on earth will you pay for this-Ocean finance?

We need someone creative in midfield, someone who can provide a goal threat, play someone in, generally be brave, get on the ball and be creative. We currently only have Scholes willing do that sort of thing. Fletcher is willing and got a few important goals, but his strenght isnt as a creative midfielder. Ozil played well in the summer, and looks a great prospect. If the £12m fee is right, then he'd certainly be worth a punt. When you consider the money we paid for Nani and Anderson a few yrs back, players who hadnt showed as much as Ozil has, then you'd have to say Ozil looks great value.

Regardless of what you read in the media, we actually have transfer money.

We should definitely get him or Stevie Ireland to replace scholesy.

Wish we would get Suarez but we already have 7 strikers.

As much as I hate to say it, Giggsys spot on, Liverpools poor season was down to Torres being injured for the majority and Rafa Benitez. Roy Hodgson will have them organised and if their key men stay fit in Torres, Gerrard, Mascherano, Cole and Reina they have a very strong spine to the team. Their man problem is the lack of quality around them.

As for Ozil, if we can get him for less than £15m then there is no way SAF can argue there is no value in the market. At 21 years old he has a great future ahead of him, and a season blending into the team this year learning from the likes of Giggs and Scholes will see him hit the ground running next season when Scholesy calls it a day. I've heard Bryan Robson say a few times he thinks we need a goalscoring midfielder - surely he wouldnt come out and say this if it wasnt going to happen?

We doesn't need much, but Ozil is maybe just what we need. This is the player, alongside Sneijder, the closest we'd come to a player of the very best Paul Scholes standard.

he would be ideal for us, he could play beside fletcher/carrick or just off wazza, sign him up fergie.

Yet more encouraging signs coming out of Old Trafford? I hope that a successful conclusion to the 'Ozil saga' proves that my unwavering faith in SAF is truly vindicated. I watch the developement of this story with avid interest.

What's wrong with Ocean finance?

this is the truly great comedy of bitters of late - mocking out one financier over an other... essentially anyone who bank rolls wants a return, be that Ocean Finance, the Glazers, Abramovich, your Sheikhs... Ocean finance are making money, the Glazers are making money, Abramovich isn't making back as much as he would like and the Sheikhs are throwing money at your lot like it's going out of fashion - which sooner or later it will be... and making nothing at all... it will be interesting to see how "long term" their project is before they get sick and tired of a club littered with misfortune and anti-climax.

Citeh, if you will, had the snip a long time ago, and the sheikhs are attempting to get the juices flowing once more... the potency is blatantly not there, and how many times will they undergo surgery to get what they want?

Ozil, on the other hand, seems like he could cause some eruptions on the stretford end...!

Champions league money helps!

More rubbish! He was priced at £25 Million before the World cup, he had by all accounts a sucessful one and now his priced at £12 Million. Who is kidding who here?
Besides Fergo has spent all his transfer money until at least 2011, the only way is to have another scrape around the bargain basement.
You never know you might find another 'Crock' (sorry I meant Pearl) like Owen (Michael that is not Hargreaves).

Where are these stories coming from. Stuart Mathieson must have been in the pub last night and decided there was nothing to write about, so create a new story linking a player to United !!!!

Peter Doherty. As good as it gets, Levenshulme (22/07/2010 at 12:01)

You are of course perfectly correct. We wanted Orville for the kids Xmas party but City just paid 35 million for him as a winger.

Oh boy. Ozil is young, world class and very cheap... wonder what excuses SAF & Gill will come up with to explain why we're not interested in him??!!!!
