Berbatov retires from international football

INTERNATIONAL RETIREMENT: Dimitar Berbatov
Manchester United's Bulgarian forward Dimitar Berbatov has announced his retirement from international football.

Berbatov, who has had an inconsistent season with the Reds, made 74 appearances for his country and scored a record 48 goals.

However, his performances in the team’s failed World Cup qualifying campaign drew widespread criticism in his homeland.

Speaking at a press conference in Sofia, the 29-year-old said: “I came to the decision that as of now I have retired from the national team.

“It wasn’t a decision I took lightly and I have reconsidered several times.

“Everything has a beginning and an end and that is today.”

Do you think Berbatov's decision will improve his United form? Have your say.

Think its a good move for him - Retire before you get dropped!

Great news. Now he can concentrate on sitting on the bench for united and practicing totally fluffing his chances when he is brought on in the last 10 minutes or looking totally out of his depth when he's asked to take rooney's place in a roll that's totally alien to him.

It will be easier for England for sure in qualifications. Martin Petrov from ManCity is aging and is plugged by injuries,Stilian Petrov is great midfielder, but not the one to score many goals at all. Only Bojinov, now on loan to Parma from ManCity, scored 8 goals at Parma and was their highest top scorer. All the rest in the Bulgaria national team is bad.

Retiring from international football at age 29, when he should be at the peak of his powers? What an enigma this guy is! I suppose this is good news for United , if he is still with us next season of course.

the only thing disapointing about this headline was seeing the word "international" in it.

I believe that he also retired from domestic football a couple of seasons ago!!!!!! Tee hee.

a wise decision.now he can concentrate on his united career.im hoping fergie keeps him as he is a fantastic talent.just needs a massive run of games.like rooney has.

great move seeing he often cops an injury playing 4bulgaria.he can now concentrate on his united carreer.i actually thought tevez was better suited than him.but now that saf has chosen him i hope he retains him 4 next season.no one at united holds the ball better than him, especially when we're under the cosh.everyone knows the bloke has immense talent.i think all he really needs is a massive string of games to get his game going.(just like rooney).i do remember he missing some great chances too in his time,or not giving the ball to a better positioned team mate in the box, like to valencia against chelsea at stamford bridge in the first half.but nobody wants to say anything cause its rooney we r talking about.just look at nani's progress when given a really good string of games and i think berba is much more talented than him.

Picking up all those medals doesn't require all that much effort but how would a Bertie know about picking up medals?

Looking at this season, Berbatov has scored or created a goal for United almost once a game, (1 per game + 13 minutes), but that doesn’t get any credit, whilst Tevez needed almost four hours to score or assist a goal last season, and Smithy needed three and a half hours.
Interesting then that Berbatov is considered a flop and is booed by sections of our support, whilst Carlos Tevez is adored.

What does that tell us about the standards of some United fans? Running around and looking to be working hard is a more admirable quality in a striker than scoring and creating goals. Great.
If Berbatov cost us £10m I honestly don’t think there would be a problem but that price tag is the worst thing that could ever happen to him. I have long been a defender of Berbatov but I am now beginning to side with those who think we should get rid. He is never going to prosper in the increasingly hostile environment our fans are creating, so maybe it is time he got out and joined a club where he could be adored, the way we adored Tevez and Smith. The manager hasn’t adapted our tactics to suit Berbatov, the way he has done for Ruud van Nistelrooy, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, so maybe that tells us all we need to know. The manager wanted him enough to eventually pay out £30m but not enough to take a risk in trying to find tactics which will compliment him, so there’s not a lot Berbatov can do about it. Against top sides, the manager is worried we’ll be overrun in midfield, a possible indication of the lacking of world class quality in this position, and the Bulgarian pays the price. If we had a Roy Keane-Paul Scholes at their peak combination, would the manager feel the need to play five midfielders and just one striker? Regardless, the press fancy his time to be up and if he leaves now he can go down in the history books as a Manchester United flop, a title I’m sure Levy will be happy with, knowing his price tag always ensured it would be given. But it all could have been so different.
I wonder how much Newcastle would want for Smithy eh? Berb out, Smith in? Or better still, let’s sign that Karim Benzema, who turned us down in the summer to kiss the Real Madrid’s badge, and then our fans will be happy.

Give Berbatov another crack.....

If Berba didn't have a £30m tag round his neck,His overall performance on the pitch would be applauded, quitting International football, will benefit United

All those vicious and unkind remarks have angered me so much that I have to resort to
very strong words. You bunch of Berbatov bashers are morons who do not appreciate top
quality. If a headless chicken like Tevez can elicit your admiration there are really no
words to describe you.

By the way is there a rule which says that for each million pounds of transfer fee a player
must score a certain number of goals per season? If there is one then Ronaldo at Real is
a failure compared to Berbatov.Let me remind you again that it was Ferguson who agreed
to the fee and Berbatov had nothing to do with it.Why don't you round on Ferguson?

Excellent post, Berba is sheer class-fact. Not sure I agree with your bit about Alan Smith being 'adored' by who exactly. He was voted the worst Premiership player a couple of seasons ago whilst at Newcastle. Sums him up really, now he was a very poor buy, and to be honest Fergie's made a few, but with his track record you can't knock him really can you?
