Fernando Torres gave the visitors a fifth-minute lead but United fought back with goals from Wayne Rooney and Ji-Sung Park to snatch all three points.
It was a match of few chances but United made the most of theirs with clinical finishing.
However, the much-hearlded Torres fluffed two half chances after finding space in the box but failed to even test United keeper Edwin van der Sar.
Fletcher hailed the grit and determination of United as they try to close in on a record fourth successive championship.
“The team which puts the most consistent run together will probably be champions, and we are making a good fist of it,” Fletcher said.
“It was a difficult game, with not much football played..
“You want to win the title with flowing football, but sometimes you have to grind out results and show character - that is what we did.”
The Scottish international maintained referee Howard Webb was right to give a penalty.
“I definitely thought it was a foul,” said Fletcher.
“He was pulling Valencia and the contact with his legs was right on the edge of the box.
“The keeper saved it, but Wazza (Rooney) is so composed that he was able to tap it in afterwards.”

appreciate his honest endeavour and tireless workrate. It was an incredibly brave header. People on this site who continually rubbish him, should think before they criticise. Your postings shout loudest about your lack of understanding regarding the diverse components of a team.
United outfought rather than outplayed Liverpool, and that is good enough at this stage of the season. It is not possible to play like world beaters in every match. We won. We got three points. Why are some people not happy with that????

most effective midfielders anywhere! For the opposition, Fletcher in a
nightmare to play against, I'd love to see United play Barca again only
this time with Darren, Scholes and Carrick on the park!
Up the Reds!

Yes, there is still a long way to go, but we are the obvious favourites. Whilst arsenal have the easier run in on paper, they do not have our experience or squad strength. I think things have worked for them lately, the little breaks going in their favour, like the hammers missing that penalty on Saturday. Maybe the brummies will give them a sterner test this weekend. And I can certainly see the bitters and spurs taking points off them.
We can all but finish chelsea off by beating them. And their next two opponents will be no pushovers either.
Yes, our title destiny is in our hands. It is up to us grab it!

Agreed, but I still doubt that midfield has enough to match Barcelona's. Although it would definitely move the ball with more fluidity and foresight than the one that played last year.
