Sir Alex Ferguson will demand the Reds - buoyed by the return of red-hot striker Wayne Rooney - take the second leg of the first round knockout tie to the Italians and finish the job early.
Two years ago, United secured a 2-0 win against Roma in Italy. But in the return in Manchester it wasn't until Carlos Tevez scored in the 70th minute that the stadium could breathe a sigh of relief.
The United boss, however, doesn't want Leonardo's team to grab an early booster and pegging them back will be his strategy for success.
"I don't think we are very good at defending leads, so we will play our normal game," said Sir Alex. "That includes attacking, it always has. We will try to do it in our normal way. We hope to kill the tie with our own attacking abilities.
"We are in a strong position with a 3-2 win in the San Siro, which on top of home advantage must make us favourites.
"But I don't think we should be confused by the 3-2 score and think it gives us a bye or a passage into the next phase of the competition.
"We have to accept this is a very difficult game for us and one that we need to win. That is how I am approaching it. Winning the match.
"It is certainly an open tie. There is no doubt AC Milan have to score, which should make it a really open match.
"What we need is an early goal because with the advantage of our away goals Milan would then find themselves in a very difficult position."
“So I won't be thinking of setting out to play defensively to protect our lead. That's not the way we play.
“Our best players are attackers and we play to our strengths.”
Fergie was disappointed that United didn't effectively end the two-legged tie in Italy.
Clarence Seedorf's late goal has given the Serie A side a lifeline.
“The first 15 minutes three weeks ago was a bad spell for us and the best one for them. We could have been two or three down. Once we recovered we played very well and we should have killed the tie altogether,” the United manager added.
“Goals change games and Seedorf's at the end keeps the match on a tightrope. I can understand that Milan are feeling confident.
"That second goal at the end will have given them encouragement there is no question about that.
“We would have preferred not to have lost a goal because then the tie would have been very difficult for Milan.
“I would have been happier if we had been able to hang on to our 3-1 lead but we are still very much in a winning position.”
Ferguson is expecting Old Trafford to conjure up one of its cracking Euro atmospheres to match the San Siro volume three weeks ago.

I would still start with Rooney on the bench, they need a 2 nil cushion.

King up front with Berbatov for the first half to soften them up and then Rooney on for the second half to humiliate them.

Fergo, Fergo sign him up, Fergo sign him up. You couldn't even afford to pay half of what Milan are paying him.

My preferred choice being an early goal from us, say inside the first 10 minutes which essentially sets Milan off into headless chicken mode, and gives us carte blanche to batter them on the counter resulting in a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
The other way being a very cagey first half, a glut of defensive mistakes resulting in me and thousands others chewing right the way through fingers nails and half way down fingers. A half time lambasting delivering a more assured second half and perhaps just a single goal between the teams, but that we scrape through.
Fully expecting to see Fletch, Park and Mr Rooney running their backsides off for 90 minutes and closing down as much as humanly possible.

The only night of such like was Roma.....& imo, that was more the crowd/revenge etc for the goings on in the away leg than SaF sending the team out with such instructions !!
Monkey Tennis....deffo the nail biting type of night. I'll try & drown (literally) such thoughts/emotions in the village before the game, but it won't make any difference !
In readiness....the wife has already made me up a little 'funbox' for the game...... 20 individual packed sheets of Velvet Andrex, A Pair of Tena Travel underpants with detachable pad...... and a Plug !!

cannot agree more with you. YES if United sit back like City did against United in the 1st leg of the Carling Cup semi final it could turn out to be a bit panicky in the closing stages. I am a City fan but my opinion is your team have too much attacking options for Milan so to defend a slender lead would be foolish.
If Rooney & Co go for the jugular the tie will be over by half time with United out of sight 6-2 up on aggregate....
Midfield General (10/03/2010 at 13:37)
Milan will have periods of incisive play - if their forwards have their shooting boots on they could well score more than once.
They have to attack and unless we concede 2 we go through. So I want to see us keep it tight for the first half, and watch those runners from midfield lease!
If they score first half, change the plan and go for the jugular!

Did you mean to put owe there! Anyway, you are exactly right as it is - which is why when the Arab goes you will be screwed, and there will be no knights coming to your rescue because no-one cares!
