Now United are anxious to see if he'll talk about a new Old Trafford contract.
The Reds want to add Scholes' name to fellow veterans Ryan Giggs and Edwin Van der Sar who've been signed up on new 12-month deals for next season. It is now up to the 35-year-old to decide his future after joining an elite group of Premier League hitmen. Scholes had been stuck on 99 league goals for nine matches since scoring against West Ham in December.
But against Wolves he finally became the 19th member of the Premier League 100 club to join former Reds colleagues Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney. His winner in the 1-0 match at Molineux saw the champions leap frog Chelsea to go to points clear though they have played a game more.
"I've been on 99 for a while now, since the West Ham game away, so it's nice to get it done and I'm really pleased I've managed to achieve it," said the modest midfielder.
"It's a big win. It's a tough place to come. Conditions weren't ideal for football I don't think, and they're a big physical team, who made it difficult for us. The pitch wasn't great and I don't think they were too interested in playing football either. I think they just wanted to try to stop us, which made it difficult.
"1-0s are big results, as good as winning 5-0. When we come to places like Wolves we know it's going to be difficult and you just have to hang in there. We know we're not going to get many chances but we managed to scrape a goal, get a 1-0 win which has put us top of the league, and hopefully we can stay there. It's going to be really tight in the title race. All three teams will fancy their chances. We're in their with them and hopefully we can win our games and go on to win the league."
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson and defender Rio Ferdinand added their tributes to match-winning Scholes.
"You wouldn't want the ball to go to anyone else in that situation than Paul Scholes," said Fergie. "He did a little shimmy and got himself free. He scored his 100th league goal, which is marvellous for him. It is a great achievement. He is a marvellous player."
Ferdinand said, "Paul is not one who really shouts and makes noise if he scores a goal, or does something out of the ordinary, which no-one else can do - which he normally does.
"That speaks volumes about what he is. He is a true professional, a great footballer and he has been a pleasure to play alongside."
How close is Scholes to the top of his game? Have your say.

top notch players should sign to play for united to replace them sooooooooon

It's been a joy to see the Ginger Prince find a new lease of footballing life and he's really got comfortable in that role now. He could carry on for at least another couple of seasons and that's got to be great news for United.

The team always have a better balance with him in the side. He's now forced his way back in the ‘big’ games as well and played really well to boot. I think at 35 his performances against Arsenal, Milan etc are as good as it gets.
He has taken some stick on this forum in the last season or two but the side are better with him than without him. Still a major influence on the side and that says it all.
I was one of those who wanted Ginge to retire at the end of last season so he’s proved me wrong as well. If any thing his overall form this season has been better than last season.
Scholesy passed me the ball.., LU:HG (08/03/2010 at 12:11)

end of this season.True you played very well in some matches but you were also
very poor in many others.Come next season your reaction is going to be a little
bit slower still and it might not do your reputation any good if you continue to play.

The more games he is playing the better he is getting. Another season at least until a true replacement is found.

One of the clubs all time greats .
Pleasing but worrying at the same time that he is still one of our best players .Often the heatbeat of the side and when he plays well so does the team as a whole

Paul Scholes is not the first holding-midfielder of his ilk.

He could still do a job for Oldham the season after next, we still need him for next season, our young lads can only get better by playing and training with one of the greatest players ever.
I wonder if he is interested in coaching?
