Macheda back in contention

Federico Macheda is close to a return from injury and the Italian might find himself thrust straight back into first-team contention.

With Michael Owen out for the season and Danny Welbeck loaned to Preston, Macheda's fitness has taken on a new importance.

“They are dropping off at the moment but we have got some encouragement with players coming back,” said Ferguson.

“Macheda starts training with the first team again next week which is also good news, particularly considering the loss of Michael.

“He is a good player to have back.

“So we have had some disappointments with some, and light at the end of the tunnel with other players.”

Of course he can do a job as an impact sub, there can be no doubt about that. Great to have him back.

He's got a chance I think he's big enough and has a real strikers eye for goal. I'll bet he's glad that SAF decided to keep his (supposed) money in the bank rather than buy a decent striker he may get another shot at it.

I like this lad, he's big and strong, doesn't get pushed about much, and gives as good as he gets. Reminds me a little of Whiteside, because he didn't have great pace, but what a player!

Come on Macha get working hard on your earlier showings and follow the examples of Giggsy and Scholesy and GN. Not to mention the Roo. You have what it takes so show it.
Actually guys this long injury lay off just might be a blessing in diguise for him as he now knows what it is like to be out of the game for a while. Not that I would wish that on anyone but I thought too that fame came at him too soon and he started to beleive in his own hype.

gotta say i am a fan of Kiko! even as a 17 year old last season he looked strong enough and willing enough to make the grade at Utd. in my oponnion he is much more of a prospect than welbeck. I would like to see him and diouf make some appearances in the coming weeks. also can anyone shed any light as to why Kiko has been injured for so long? was it a serious injury?

I'm afraid people expected too much of the lad when he broke through last year and I remember urging caution at the time. This year, Kiko appears to have gone backwards a bit - through injury but also, it seems, from his believing his own publicity. Maybe, his new contract, giving him a decent hike in salary came a bit early. I know that the Italian Under 21 manager urged him to keep his feet on the ground after he apparently lorded around a bit off the field earlier this season. One can only hope that the guy is bright enough to see that he needs to knuckle down and work hard (surely, the example of the likes of Rooney and Ronaldo should serve him well) - maybe, just maybe, we have a future star.

He is good enough, he can get much better, his physique is brilliant for his age, his mental characteristics are those of a winner, but the management needs to realize he will leave if he does not play. I am sure Italian clubs would not mind a teenage Vieri, nor others for that matter, he just needs to be truly valued on our side, and its not lacking from the fans.

Now that Owen is out for the season, Macheda has a chance, for sure. However, he will compete with Diouf for a spot, and that won't be easy. It's unfortunate that Welbeck is on loan right now, as he's a better forward than both.

Really happy that he is back fully fit.As other's have said, what injury has he been suffering from?Big blow to have Owen missing for the rest of the season so our 4 frontline striker's for the remainder of the season will be Rooney--Berbatov--Diouf--Macheda.

The lad has missed a fair bit of football but it seems this injury was just a kick on the knee and he'll likely be on the bench for Preston at the weekend.

The journalist who wrote this piece says that Danny Wellbeck has been loaned to Preston, which is correct. But United can cancel that loan at a moment's notice. It appears to me that with Owen out for the rest of the season United have no real cover for Rooney, and should recall Wellbeck, who is far more experienced than Macheda. C'mon, Fergie, United is far more important than the team your kid manages.

I agree with the views welcoming him back. With the news on Owen, this could be the silver lining to that cloud. I don't agree with the views that Wellbeck is better than him at present. This boy has a true striker's eye for goal, with the confidence to make a telling impact from the bench.

Along with Diouf he represents another option if needed.

I have missed this kid like nothing else to be honest. I hope he knows how much he is loved at OT. With Owen crocked this is more than good news. It would be nice if he came in with the same impact to the title race as he did at the end of last season. Some italian dish for a change1
