Anderson, Ferdinand injuries rock Reds

Manchester United midfielder Anderson has been ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing his cruciate ligament during Tuesday’s win over West Ham.

Anderson, who was making his first appearance for over a month, suffered the injury during the first half of the 3-0 Barclays Premier League win.

It is another setback for the Brazilian, who has struggled to hold down a regular place since joining United from Porto in 2007.

Anderson will to Portugal in a fortnight for an operation and Ferguson said: “The real bad news is that Anderson has a cruciate knee injury.

“He will be out for the rest of the season. It is a bad blow."

Ferguson added: “He was looking forward to the match on Tuesday and he was showing great energy to do well.

“It is a bit of a blow to us, particularly with the AC Milan game coming up because Michael Carrick is suspended.

“It is strange, when you see cruciate injuries it is usually something simple. He stretched out for the ball and his knee just popped.

“We have assessed the situation and know he needs the operation.

“That will be done in two weeks’ time in Portugal once the swelling has gone down. Sometimes we have sent them to Dr Steadman in Colorado. In this instance he is comfortable with the surgeon he has dealt with in Portugal in the past.

“He will be out for six months and hopefully that should have him about right for the new season.”

Meanwhile, England skipper Rio Ferdinand will miss Sunday's Carling Cup final with a back injury.

He has also been ruled out of England’s international against Egypt after feeling a twinge in his back before Tuesday’s Barclays Premier League match against West Ham.

That came just three games into his comeback from a long-standing back complaint which kept him out for more than three months.

I think if Ferdinand doesn't make it back soon, it will be a miracle if we win anything more than the Carling Cup this season. Personally, I wouldn't care too much if we lost that final; the best part of the competition was the schadenfreude gleaned from the antics of Gary Cook (did I get the name right?), City's financial henchman and Tevis' eventual chagrin.
Evans, Brown and the ageing Neville at the back may spell disaster in the crunch game against Chelsea and against any top side left in the CL.

My God, that is bad luck for Anderson, you have to feel for the lad. It's really not going for him at United and hopefully he can turn it around eventually but his focus now will obviously just be recovery.

Absolute stinker for Anderson, i really feel for him and his world cup ambitions, poor lad.

As for Rio, it looks like his back problems just won't be going away, no matter how much traction and other remedies they try on him. I know a very good chiropracter in town who'd give it a good go at sorting it out though - so if you're reading this Rio, get your hobbling frame down to St Annes Sq for an adjustment or two.

its a real problem with the anderson injury,with him and hargreaves out for the season,giggs still injured it means we only have fletch,carrick,scholes and gibson and with our formation generally 4-3-3 now and scholes being the age he is,it means that fletch and carrick will probably have to play the remainder of the season without a break.

We need to seriously think of bringing in a world class centre half. there are two major scenarios here; If Vidic is sold he will need replacing, also Ferdi is a liability now with his injuries, and will not play a full season. We will need at least another top class defender. Worst scenario is If Vidic goes and Ferdy is crocked from the start of next season, then a world class defender and Evans/Smalling/DeLaet/Gill etc would have to be called on, at least till jan transfer window. Fergie will then have enough time to assess if he needs to dip into the market again. Just wondering what happened to Cathcart.

Ultimatum time for Hargreaves now. Be prepared to play, or do something useful and retire and generate some insurance money.

He seems unlikely ever to contribute anything else.

Cant we get Cleverley back from Watford? He is at least the equal of Gibson, and has scored 10 goals in 25 games. Not a bad record for a midfielder. It would give us more cover.

Gutted for the Ando. This news has really upset me. He is young and headstrong and has his run-ins with the boss. But as someone wrote, he always comes back repentant and tries hard. I wish him s speedy recovery.

I never seen a season with so many injuries yet we are still in three competitions approaching March!

The majority of this season we have a second choice defence, now with the AC Milan game coming up we have four midfields in Giggs, Carrick, Anderson and Hargreaves out. Will have to play 442 and hope we can score.

Need to buy a top central midfielder in the Summer.

Oh dear me, very sad news for Ando. It appears that ALL UNITED fans are in agreement with their sympathies.

Whenever there are negatives and, however hard it is to look for positives, it is important to be optimistic about the future outcome. I am struggling to come up with some encouraging comments, but here goes....
The best I can do is to inform him that when he is eventually over the injury, he most definitely gets a fresh start; all his misdemeanours will be a thing of the past. The injury will heal completely; that is the thought that must always be uppermost in his head. It has happened to many players before and they have come back with a 'vengeance'.

Ando, I look forward to watching you play next season. Listen to the medical experts, and work hard when they give the go ahead. Can't wait to hear the Anderson song again! (On Sunday?)

Unfortunate for him and deffo no WC. I had hoped to see him do well in a bid to get selected for the brazil squad but these things happen. 6 months seems quick but then he is only 21 or 22 and medical techniques have improved. He will be fresh for next season at least

and indeed this will make life difficult for the Milan game but still we can play scholes with fletch and gibson on the bench so its hardly a disaster. Plus valencia or Park can slot in midfield if need be. You would expect him to start with berbatov now rather than roo as a lone striker

I feel really gutted 4 him & UTD as I honstly thought he was going to come back with a vengeance to show us all what he has! I've seen this guy rip UTD apart @ 17 in Holland! Might B a blessing to see him & O/H back @ the same time as they played their best games together in M/F, It would B like having 2 new players put fletch in the mix & not a bad M/F 3! I also think if we R 2 buy a class striker I think Roonster will play @ the top of the diamond 2 replace scholes with runs into the box @ B just as deadly!

Wonder if Giggs will be available and match-ready in time for Milan ... Also, if Valencia is an option at RCM, then maybe it would be a good idea to give him a few starts in that position as soon as Nani gets back from suspension.
