Ronaldo finally completed his much talked about move to Madrid last summer for a world record fee of £80million.
Madrid had long been pursuing the Portugal international and the relationship between the two clubs had rapidly disintegrated with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson famously claiming he would not sell the Primera Division outfit "a virus".
Calderon, who resigned as president at the beginning of last year, admitted Madrid would have been pipped to the post for Ronaldo's signature had the FIFA world player of the year not had such a strong desire to move to the Bernabeu.
The former Madrid chief also revealed that both the club and player accepted a clause which would have ensured a 30million euro fine had either of them pulled out of the deal.
"Cristiano reached an agreement on December 8 2008 with Manchester United to come to Real Madrid," Calderon told Spanish Eurosport.
"There was no negotiation about this, the signing was already done. I did my bit.
"The player, in a gesture of good faith and clear desire to come to Madrid, agreed to a clause which could have inflicted a financial penalty of 30 million euros.
"But then Barcelona and Inter Milan tried to sign him too. It was a difficult situation because for United that would have solved the problem.
"It's very well known that Alex Ferguson is not a friend of Real Madrid, does not see Madrid in good light because they are sporting rivals, in trophies and European competition.
"If he had gone to Barcelona it would have been very good because it would have allowed them to resolve that problem and would have taken away a great player from Real Madrid.
"But you have to say that the player remained firm and decisive in not going to another club that wasn't Real Madrid.
"He rejected them and that is certain."
What do you think? Have your say.

We may well see him back in Manchester 1 day, when he's about 36 and looking for an easy retirement the bitters will pay about 20+ mil for him.

When Fergie said he 'wouldn't sell that mob a virus' he was talking about you and your board not Real Madrid, who which Manchester United have a long and healthy relationship. If you would have remained in charge you wouldn't have got Ronaldo, why coz you weren't prepared to pay the buyout price which Perez did allowing him to make contact with the player.
We all new the lad was going it was his dream, just not on your watch, tell me again why did you leave Madrid on your terms or were you forced out under pressure???

Have you not heard United have survived his departure and wish to read about our club, not Calderon or RM nor Ronaldo for that matter.

More faces than a town hall clock that Calderon.
I would not bet against Ronaldo getting bored with life in Spain in say 3-4 seasons and coming back to us in his prime. Base this only on the positive comments he has made about the Club since he left and the continued admiration SAF clearly still holds for him.
First post on here, Longsight lad now living in Sydney. Hoping for a positive result against the Villa tonight or in my case from 7am on Thursday.

I don't get it. We have a "good" relationship, that why we sold them Ruud Van (score goals for them), Beckham (helped them La Liga), Heinze (helped them lose La Liga) and now Ronaldo.

Regardless if that was a smart move from Barcelona or not, the FACT is that Barcelona snubbed Ronaldo, and not the other way.

I heard that they were also looking at George Graham as a potential captain (seeing as they couldn't get Kirk)
