Rafael will learn from Bellamy tussle - Albiston

RAFAEL da Silva should look upon his derby encounter with Craig Bellamy as a vital part of his education.

Former United full-back Arthur Albiston is confident the 19-year-old Brazilian will store the experience away and learn from it.

Rafael was downcast after referee Mike Dean penalised him in the key 40th minute tussle that gave City the leg up back into Tuesday's Carling Cup semi final at Eastlands.

The teenager and the Blues' wily 30-year-old front-man went shoulder-to-shoulder in the race that led to City's penalty.

Rafael has already overcome one Carling Cup setback this term after being sent off for a professional foul at Old Trafford against Wolves in September.

And Albiston has no doubts he will bounce back again.

"Rafa will put the incident behind him. He is a great talent and his ability is second to none. This is all part of the growing up process at Old Trafford," Albiston told M.E.N. Sport.

"You have to overcome adversity at United and he will. Incidents like Tuesday are highlighted because of the enormity of the game and because it is United. He will be getting used to that kind of exposure and scrutiny.

"Rafa is no slouch. He is quick, probably quicker than Craig Bellamy. But Bellamy is experienced and he is also a striker who wants to score goals.

"Hats off to Craig because he leant into Rafa and used all his experience. Then it is down to how the referee sees it.

"But the problem all started with the fantastic ball behind Rafael and that is something he will have to become very aware of. If you have a combination of Rafa's pace and Gary Neville's experience it would be perfect to look after the City forward.

"I think the manager will play Rafa up against Bellamy again next week at Old Trafford because he has the speed to match him or better him.

"But if he looks at the incident again and people like Neville and Evra have a little word about that killer ball then he should be okay and it will be something he will look back on as a key part of his education."

What do you think? Have your say.

Well I agree 100% with Arthur I remember winning an Autographed United ball and it was Arthur who presented it to me at Hough end.

"Experience" is, no doubt, a euphemism for conning the referee. (In Bellamy's defense, however, it should be pointed out that the "foul" occurred outside the box.) One should have no doubt that it takes very little cleverness to fool Mr. Dean. While Bellamy certainly has talent, there is no use in giving him plaudits for something that virtually anyone else could have done; anyone, that is, who is prone to fall over a lot, e.g., Drogba, Torres, Eduardo, etc.

Very funny just watching sky sports and Mike Dein giving a penalty against us for Portsmouth didnt think that was a penalty either.

Witiut a dream...

Funny man you, aren't you? Ever considered the stage? Lets hope you have as much to say round about this time next week.

Somehow I doubt it!

The boy will learn. He's a class act, and will only get better. Few full backs can cope at the very highest level as teenagers. They get isolated out on the flanks at some point during high profile games, and inevitably suffer for it.

But he will bounce back stronger, and will develop into a world class player.

Albiston hasn't got a clue about pace because he was slow when he was playing. Bellamy skinned the kid time and time again because he has pace to burn. Hope he plays in the second leg so he can face the same humiliation.

As for the penalty it was a fantastic decision by the ref. Having been fouled outside the area, the ref gave City the advantage after outpacing the Brazilian. Bellamy was foulded again inches inside the area - Stonewall. Oh I checked the papers the following day and all of them said it was a penalty because Carlos scored from it.

Rafael is a young player and will get better, no matter who he is up against...Craig Bellamy OR Mike Dean and the rest.

Rafael - sent off for a professional foul at Old Trafford against Wolves in September. The stupid shirt tug against Citeh. And the ridiculous shove to give away a penalty away at Hull in the league.
3 indidents to put behind him and learn from then eh Arthur? Not doubting his potential but please learn quicker and CONCENTRATE.

danny, officially it was Fabio that got sent off against Wolves. They're so alike though, who really knows!

The sending off against Wolves, the mindless shove in the back to gives Hull a penalty, the shirt pulling on Tuesday........the boy has talent for sure but thats 3 incidents he needs to put behind him in 4 months Arthur.....he needs to CONCENTRATE more and cut out the petulance.

Danny, Wilmslow...Im afraid you have gotten your Da Silva twins mixed up...as it was actually FABIO whom was sent off against Wolves in the 3rd round and not RAFAEL as you state in your post...

tut tut tut!!!!

Wes Brown is our best right back. Rafael is 19 and has little experience. If Vidic is fit for Wednesday then Wes should be moved to right back. Rafael has time on his side and will be a great player but he is too eager and rash and gives too many fouls and penalty's away, and he collects cards like Giggs collects trophies!

I am afraid that Wes Brown is not United's best right-back anymore and I think that the raft of injuries he has experienced over the years, inconjunction with his running style will accelerate his decline.

The midfield might require a slightly different composition to play to the DaSilva's strengths but I am sure it will be worth it. I can't think of a right-back in the Premiership better suited to United than Rafael.

THOMAS DICKERSON, 21/01/2010 at 18:47

I agree that City will need many many years, if its even possible, to match what United have achieved in the last 20 years (Due to future investment in other clubs, I don't think a period of dominance like United's will ever be seen again).

But, a power shift is not that !

ONE example of a power shift is United not winning the PL during the next 5 years, while City win it 2 or more times, and at the same time, City win more than 50% of the Derby games. I'm not stating that this will happen, but it's an example of a power shift.

POWER SHIFT IS NOT A TERM USED BY UNITED FANS. THIS TERM HAS BEEN INVENTED BY CITY FANS. AND SPORTS WRITERS, AND ANYONE ELSE JELOUS OF THE FANTASTIC SUCCESS ENJOYED BY MANCHESTER UNITED IN RECENT YEARS AND EARLIER. REMEMBER THIS CITY ARE STILL LOOKING UP THE LEAGUE AT UNITEDS BACKSIDES.

THOMAS DICKERSON You realy are a numpty aint you history this history that this is now arr kid when you said 76,000 every week put a 1 inbetween the 76 and another 3 zeros on the end and that is your debt that your club is in. Thats not history thats reality the tide is turning in 5 years time you will be a mid table team slating your manager begging for fergie to come back. The fat lady is about to sing and boy we will all love to hear it up and down the country. The ride is nearly overlook at the wider picture all of you so called reds far and wide city are here and are not going away look at the money involved. This club may not have the history you have but they have more money than what has gone through uniteds books in their entire history. What is that all about parading youself in the middle east in the middle of a season trying to get a punter to buy you desperate. Liverpool have more history than you and look a better buy. Rooney will be gone soon and then what eh what. Good luck and god bless america.

My first opportunity in commenting on Tuesdays game. You have to give credit where it's due, Tevez and Given did brilliantly for Citeh. The ball inside the fullback for their first goal was excellent. Was it a penalty or not? Well Citeh had one go against them on Saturday just like it. The ref played advantage but the first offence occured outside the box. Some you get, some you don't. How Dean gave a corner leading up to Citeh's second was beyond me, but United should have defended better. United certainly had the chances in the second half and Given (for me MoM) managed to keep United at bay.

If you heard SAF comments after the Burnley game saying that he felt we were too open to the counter attack playing 442 at the moment. Someone has commented on another thread about Rio & Vidic absence causing us problems. I think once they're both back we'll see a different set of tactics, certainly a more attacking style of play.

Wasn't over confident on Tuesday but after that game I feel United have what it takes to over come Citeh on Wednesday.

Some of you should have a look at the game again and note the raking 50 yard inch perfect balls from Wes to Valencia. Get off their backs and get behind the team.

As long as he keeps Neville out of the team, its fine by me. Both of the twins have a great future, and will make mistakes before becoming great players. Thats how youth progression works. If we wanted the finished article for 11 players on the pitch, we would be Chelsea. Or soon to be those lot down the road. I wish our back 4 would have consisted of Pique, who would have complimented Evans superbly. Thats what we should be about. Vidic, Nev, Rio- that team has had its day, a successful one too mind!
