City v United called off

MANCHESTER United's clash at Manchester City in the Carling Cup has been postponed because of the weather.

The sides were to have met in the first leg of their semi-final on Wednesday night but safety concerns for fans getting to Eastlands mean the game has been called off.

“It is a huge disappointment for everyone that we have had to postpone the tie but we have had the kind of harsh weather unseen in this part of the world for years and years,” City CEO Garry Cook told www.mcfc.co.uk.

“We pursued every avenue possible in search of a solution and whilst the pitch is still playable, what was paramount in our thinking was the safety of fans travelling to and from the game especially in light of the sub-zero temperature forecast for Wednesday night.

“In the end everyone who was part of the discussions was unanimous that it would have been too dangerous to play the game as scheduled.”

The rearranged first leg will be played on January 19 (7.45pm) with the return at Old Trafford on January 27 (8pm).

That's a bit of an anti-climax but at least we can get more defenders fit without rushing them back too early for a Carling Cup game.

The council house comments make me smile for two reasons i) are you suggesting we cant afford a ground of our own?.... Thought not! ii) The absolute monstrosity that is Old trafford. Its like Blackpool down there LOL

ha ha this time next year United may have already opened negotiations up to sell Old Trafford to help pay off their £770m debt.
As for the 'Council House' theory you obviously overlook the fact that our owners (bless em) are negotiating a deal for MCFC to buy Eastlands and all the ground surrounding it for £300m which by the way work on the foundations ie across Ashton New Rd on the old Clayton Anyline site will be a massive new academy HQ plus other extensions on the vast areas of ground up towards Bradford Road so do please stop this 'council House' nonsense its a worn out record now which has become so tedious ---THE FUTURE IS SKY BLUE ....

ted knott, droylsden - Hows the balance sheets on the finances of Mercenary Citeh mate? A nice healthy loss being accrued I see, great business structure in place.... so long as your sugar daddy keeps putting his hands in his pockets to bail you out. £216.5m spent on average mercenaries and at least another £216.5m to go before you'll challenge for a title. Even then you'd have to depend soley on the sheikh putting his hands deeper into his pockets to keep his current plaything afloat. So what happens when he decides he's bored of playing fantasy football in England as he still can't win a trophy after spending all that money and decides to try Spain next! lol Citeh will sink faster than you can say Leeds and with no business or financial structure in place the bitters will be but a distant memory.

Lambo - Yes you may smile but the fact remains that Wastelands is a council owned (snow-covered) rubbish tip designed to hold any over-inflated, over-rated and over-paid mercenaries that are unwanted by other clubs. No matter how much money 'tacky' City have, they will never be considered to be 'The World's Greatest Club'. You only have to look at United's history, and culture to realise this, not to mention the 'massive' trophy haul. Even when United were in the old second division, they were still the bigger draw. Forever in our shadow, and we love it.

I think City are quietly relieved the game is off, They are giving all the bravado and were gonna do this and that, deep down a lot of them were thinking they would lose, they have fewer fit defenders than us with other key players out. I for one was looking forward to going there and smashing them. Does anyone know if I will be able to use the original tkt on 19th?

Dream on..... attack City all you like and make fun of our Great Owner. The Sheikh has no intentions of walking away. I just pray that when United/Glazers go bust, he doesn't help them out like he and his family have done with Dubai. What you seem to forget is that City invested in CoMS to the tune of around £30 million and the Club is going to buy the Stadium and our Owner is going to develop East Manchester, but don't let the facts get in the way of things, you stick to your blinkered views across the Irish Sea.

Uniteds dumping from another cup must wait another week, not to worry.
Second place in the premiership - defeat in the semi of the carling cup - knocked out of the Champions league - already out of the FA cup. Uniteds achievements in 2010 will be a Champions league spot due to second place in the league. Mark my words. (Oh and old madman Baconchops will be finally carted off frothing at the mouth)

Bummer, I was looking forward to that, had plans to meet a friend from
Barcelona in a San Francisco Irish pub to watch. He hates City like he does Espanyol, I love that! We'll just have school City in the finer art of football another time.
