Manchester United

United v Wigan: Preview

Gary Neville
GARY Neville returns to the Manchester United squad for Wednesday's Premier League encounter with Wigan as the Reds' defensive problems continue to ease.

Neville limped out of the win at West Ham earlier this month with a groin injury but is expected to fill the right-back berth against the Latics to complete an experienced back-four.

Edwin van der Sar has been placed on compassionate leave, so Tomasz Kuszczak should continue in goal, while Paul Scholes has recovered from the hip problem that saw him miss Sunday's trip to Hull.

Midfielder Mohamed Diame is the only player unavailable for Wigan as he recovers from a knee ligament injury.

Boss Roberto Martinez kept the same XI on the field for the entire 90 minutes in the Boxing Day draw at home to Blackburn but they have had a couple more days’ rest than most teams.

Should Martinez decide to stiffen the midfield against the defending champions striker Jason Scotland would be the most likely to make way.

Manchester United (from): Kuszczak, Foster, Neville, Rafael, De Laet, Vidic, Brown, Evra, Fabio, Valencia, Park, Carrick, Fletcher, Scholes, Anderson, Gibson, Giggs, Obertan, Rooney, Berbatov, Owen, Welbeck, Tosic.

Wigan Athletic (from): Kirkland, Bramble, Scharner, Melchiot, Boyce, Figueroa, N’Zogbia, Gomez, Thomas, Scotland, Rodallega, Amaya, De Ridder, Sinclair, Kingson, Cho, Bouaouzan, McCarthy.

United league form: WLWLW

Wigan league form: WLDLD

Key opponent: Maynor Figueroa - quality player and has a cracking shot

Prediction: United 2 Wigan 0 - The Reds, with a more solid looking defence, should win comfortably

If we marginalise Rodallega it should be an easy win. Is Nani still injured, though ?

Totally off-topic: there was an interesting ruling by a Court of Arbitration on a player in Italian football recently. Goran Pandev of Lazio was awarded free release from his contract due to not being played, which was ostensibly as punishment for not signing a new contract before the existing's expiry. Whether the vexatious statements of the Lazio President were a deciding factor in the ruling, I am unsure.

For ill, I am slightly surprised that "being picked for the team" has not been raised in a court before. Perhaps by a player who has found their status in the squad of significantly less importance than they were led to believe upon signing or than their talent may be deemed to warrant by impartial external assessment.

All our players are slowly starting to come back now which is a real boost to us all.Surely Rafael can't be droped after his brilliant performance v Hull.I no Scholes played awful v Fulham but if Wigan sit back for most of the game then there is very few players that are better at opening up a defence than him.So my team would be (not that im ever right)...........

......................Kuszaczk

Rafael..........Vidic..........Brown..........Evra

Valencia......Fletcher.......Scholes.......Obertan

................Rooney.......Berbatov

Subs: Foster, Neville, Fabio, Anderson, Carrick, Giggs, Owen

Neville should just get a seat in the stand and watch the game which we will win 4or5.0.

roykeane, i always wanted to play for city (not!)

Raphael must keep the right back slot. He's an undoubted talent, with bags of energy an enthusiasm. People bang on about his defensive limitations, but how are they going to improve if he is constantly in and out of the side. The boy does make defensive errors, but his tenacity also wins him a lot of balls he has no right to win. I also believe he offers alot going forward and along with Evra is one of the few players prepared to carry the ball offering something different to our play

If Garry Neville is fit, what will we achieve by playing him, he's not the player of old and once he plays a number of games to sharpen up his fitness, he then gets injured again, so what's the point.

Where are all the whingers from last season who continually berrated bothRonaldo and Tevez.Ronnie obviously best in the world and Tevez brilliant.Fergie must regret losing him.Tevez was treated like dirt after carrying the team almost single handedly early part of the season.Showing his class now and hes got almost the fullworks, scores regular, assists regular and grafts for 90 and we have Park who will run aimlessly for ever with poor control weak passing and shooting ability. You have to question how he was let go

Drago 34, not that I'm ever right either but I wonder whether Giggs' early withdrawal against Hull is a pointer to him starting against Wigan? Park may also get the nod ahead of Valencia, who has started a LOT of games. I would not be unhappy with the team you have suggested but I bet neither of us are right!

dog hardy, no you don't. We are not struggling without him, in fact our goalscoring has improved. And I don't recall Tevez carrying the team at any stage of his United career. He scored some crucial goals but he also missed a LOT of easy chances. Park, in case you hadn't noticed, plays in a different position so not quite sure what the point of the comparison there is. Personally, I was not sad to see Tevez go and a couple of goals against Wolves in a game where the City side are trying to impress a new manager (perhaps if they had performed with that level of commitment all season, they would still have the old one) isn't going to change my mind one iota.

DOG HARDY CHORLTON, I will tell you why Tevez left because he was offered another 50,000 a week before last season had even finished to go and play for the Bertie,s.......and good riddence to him, he was not worth 47 million that is for sure.

I hope your prediction is right Danny.

Early part of last season Ronaldo was struggling with injuries and Tevez was the main man. What exact position does Park play anyway .No produce whatsoever if you are happy seeing players run around with hardly anything fruitfull coming don,t be surprised at the dead atmosphere at OT.wON,T STOP ME supporting them as been ther since late 40s,but Utd have been built on excitement not on the whole mediocrity.Tevez and Forlan were unappreciated at OT BY the impatient fans and on these web sites.Tevez was forced out

I would love to see SAF be daring and play with Rooney behind a front two of Berba & Owen...

We need to start making other teams dread coming to Old Trafford again and not thinking that they actually have a sniff at getting something. We have not played well at home all season in all competitions and thus needs to be rectified asap

My team for tomorrow would be...with a formation of 4-3-1-2

Kuszczak, Rafael, Wes, Vida, Fabio, Valencia, Fletcher, Anderson, Rooney, Berbatov, Owen

Patrice needs to have some rest and Fabio needs games, also whilst it is good to have Nev back, it bears nothing for the future by playing him from the start, Rafael is the future and he deserves a run in the team, esepcially after his performance against Hull

On the bench I would have...

Foster, Tosic, Carrick, Welbeck, De Laet, Gibson, Corey Evans

Evra ought to be rested. Maybe Rooney too. neither have had much of a break all season.

dog hardy, Tevez was forced out of United only by the greed of his owners. They found out that they could get much more from City, twice as much, so they signed Tevez to City.

You complain about Park running about and not producing anything but that is exactly what Tevez achieved last season. He may have his best scoring season this year with the lesser Manchester team but that's because he has no competition for the forward's position and will play nearly all games. When you pay that much for a player he plays. He still misses more simple chances than he ever scores. He's an OK player. Good enough for City; not good enough for us.

What's with all the recent 'play Rooney in midfield' stuff coming from? You don't hear Liverpool fans saying play Torres in midfield or Chelsea fans saying play Drogba in midfield. So why, unless you are a bitter fan, would anyone want our best forward to play in midfield?

Report This Reply

I think Nev will start to give us an experienced back four. I'd play Scholes & Fletch in CM as that's our best combo this season.
Valencia could do with a rest but there are cup games coming up so he'll get his chance then. Park may start after his lively intro' the other night I doubt if Giggs will start twice within a week - he was pretty poor anyway wasn't he? He can play against Brum whic will be tough.
I'd be inclined to give Wellgood a game as both Owen & Berbatov have been awful in their most recent games. I doubt though that it'll happen, so The Berb will be given another chance with Owen waiting in the wings.

Dont play neville , leave Raphael and let him get better at the game , he is very good anyhow , just lacks expereince !

T&C...

Why do you often comment that someone with a different opinion to your own must be a bitter? Just because people disagree, and football is a game of opinions, you should still respect their opinions

Anyhow, my opinion is that Rooney would make a No 10 in the same way as the likes of Riquelme, Baggio, Rivaldo, Totti, Careca to name but a few...therefore giving us more threat up top with 2 additional strikers in Berbatov & Owen

Surely it is worth a try as our midfield so far this season has offered little in urgency, guile and composure in going forward and actually breaking down a defence

If Rooney could not play there then please god lets play Anderson there as after all he was bought as an emerging attacking midfielder

Think you Tevez critics are going to have it ramned down your throats pretty soon, and then of course it will only be Utd,s reserves hes playing against.Once the cliches start[Tevez Cole types] miss too many easy chanches etc then blind bias sets in.Favoured players when they miss its a case of at least he was in the right position to score.Tevez not the worlds best but oh how we could do with him now.If Rooney gets injured be honest where are enough goals going to come from.Sure if Fergie had thrown his dummy he would have stay,d as obviously not his favourite player and whilst Fletcher was missed in CL Final Tevez putting Barcelona under positive pressure to make mistakes where without Ronnie not playing his best game we more or less surrenered

"What's with all the recent 'play Rooney in midfield' stuff coming from?"

T&C, the 'experts' are on these forums, don't you know? ;). You don't even hear Liverpool fans say "play Gerrard in midfield", and they have more cause to complain, especially with inferior players such as Lucas and the overrated Mascherano there. Chelsea fans should want anybody but Ballack in midfield, yet they're not complaining, either. Perhaps all are better than they THINK they are!? If Rooney was rested, who would you play? I'd like to see if Berbatov and Welbeck could work at some point. More of Welbeck, certainly.

Doghardy, I would have Park in my squad over Tevez every time and twice on a Sunday. Not on skill, but on discipline, trust, intelligence and principle- I believe it's important to buy into the person, too. Before you come out with that "aimless runner" business, I'll tell you what I told someone else on the Hull-United post-match thread. Watch again, for the own goal. He starts that whole move, then runs the length of the pitch, and forces the defensive error. If the defender leaves it, Park scores himself. With that in mind, you could argue that he turned the game around/won it for us.

The only ones I can see starting the game will be the same defence or KK Fab Vid Brown Evra. as for the rest of the team one can never guess what it will be.
Also wigan will not come to lie down as they will have seen what other teams have done at OT.

Erh, umph, mmmh, would the manager get any credit for getting something somewhere right if your prediction happened to come true? Or would your prediction be 11-0 without Fergie perhaps?

Report This Reply

dog hardy, you overestimate Tevez. He is also a former United player whereas Park (like him or loathe him) is one of ours. We do NOT miss Tevez IMO and I would sooner have Berbatov even at 50% of his potential. You almost sound like a City fan.
