Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson has said he's not thinking about buying in the New Year as value in the market is hard to come by.
But Karim Benzema and Klaas Jan Huntelaar are potential imports.
French striker Benzema was Fergie's priority goalscoring target last summer but he was priced out of the race by Real Madrid's money-no- object policy.
But the 21-year-old has failed to shine since his £35m move to the Bernabeu and Real are thought to be keen on selling him before his value dips. While Benzema could not play in Europe for United, the Reds do need added firepower for the second half of their bid to win an historic fourth title.
Huntelaar is also a possibility. The Dutchman had a prolific strike record but hasn't hit it off at AC Milan.
Steve McClaren's Dutch club, FC Twente, have been in talks to take the 26-year-old on loan until the end of the season. The same package might appeal to United, or they could make a £10m plunge.
Valencia's forwards David Villa and David Silva, as well as Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko, who scored against the Reds could still be snapped up.
Ferguson has insisted the Glazers will invest in the transfer market if he wants the cash but with all those five due to play in the World Cup, early business in January or right at the end of the season pre-South Africa could avoid their values rising during the tournament.
Who would you like to see United go for? Have your say.

He should move in the transfer window. We need someone to put the ball in the back of the net period. Berbatov cannot be relied upon and Owen scores sitters only and does not contribute to open play. That leaves Macheda and Welbeck neither ready for that kind of load. Rooney is a wonderful player but not a natural goal scorer.
Hard to see any money like this spent, Glazers are in too much debt.
Benzema, Huntelaar, Benzema, Huntelaar, Benzema, Huntelaar - it's like blooming groundhog day! These same 2 names have cropped up year after year. They've both signed for new clubs MOVE ON!!
Take a chance on youth OBERTAN can lay the ball on a plate so can Tosic
Would take Huntelaar on 6 month loan, not sure how much action he'd see though. Natural tall goalscorer.
I've read various links to Neuer and United agreeing a fee of £10 million for him, though he won't sign until after the end of season.
Huntelaar? Are you mad, Mathieson? Inter are hawking him to teams like Twente and Alkmaar and Stuttgart. He has never been United standard. Added to that, we need defensive reinforcements, not lazy strikers.
Sounds like spin from the club.
Lets see a deal. Prove to the fans we aren't totally broke.
No reason why we can't arrange a transfer now - so why are we waiting?
Fergie seems to have lost faith with Berbatov, and who can blame him? I reassert that we should NEVER buy another over-priced over-rated (by loudmouth cockneys) Spurs player. We should cut our losses and invest in someone with more pace and determination. He had our best chance and his technique (supposedly a strength) was found wanting. The man is a bottler, mentally weak and not a winner.
As we have seen all season, Rooney is our only consistent match winner - he had an off day but was still more threat than any other attacker.
Forwards (Berb out asap)
-----------------
Aguero. If we want to continue winning titles we MUST get this young genius. 50mil would prove to be a bargain, as we will recoup more than that 5 years later when he wants to leave.
If not, Falcao (a player I recommended here 12 months ago). Hulk looks good too.
Midfield (Nani out asap)
--------------------------
Van de Vaart. Could get him on the cheap and I have touted him for years. We missed out on Sneijder (another long term pick from me) and he is now Inter's best player.
Hamsik. This kid is ready to move to a top club, and Napoli will give in for 20mil.
Pastore (Palermo) looks to have unbelievable skills - remember the name Javier Patore - he will become one of the world's best in 2-3 years. He made one pass against AC MIlan that was impossible, unbelievable.
Why bother pressing your noses up to Harrod's window when you know it is just going to upset you? You need to look for cheaper options like "I can't believe it's not Karim Benzema", "Utterly David Villa" or even "No-Klaas Jan Huntelaar".
Why do journalists keep insist on wanging on about David Villa. How many times has he got to tell people that he does not want to move abroad?
Four signings for Fergie - Ashley Young, James Milner, Agbonlahor, Gary Cahill.
"Sam Davies" -
Owen only scores "sitters"!?
Did you miss his 3rd against Wolfsburg?
If Karim Benzema was available then lets go and get him asap splash the cash now Fergy but I really can't see Fergy spending any money. He has said the new lad was a bargin at around 3M and Obertan again was a bargin but how many world class player are going to be sold for 3 to 4M NONE...For me I would of spent if available most of the money from the Ronaldo deal and brought in 3 world class player and made the team better.. One forward and two midfilders ATTACKING...CM & LM.
benzema or villa n hopefully hagreaves recovers. dzeko is not as dangerous as they say
QUOTE "Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson has said he's not thinking about buying in the New Year as value in the market is hard to come by"
This to me translates as the galzers don't want the additional debt because they are falling behind with repayments on their PIK's.
Sam Davis So Owen`s third goal against Wolfsburg was a SITTER!
I suppose you believe his goal against City was a sitter as well.
When is a story not a story ?
Time will tell ! we will just have to wait and see .
The Glazers cannot afford NOT to spend money.Their investment depends entirely on the success of the team. The value of the club is at an all time high because not only is it United but, due to results, it is a highly desirable "business".I am sure that SAF has money to spend. He would not tarnish his reputation to take the heat for the Glazers by lying about his budget. A man in his position would make it clear, one way or another ,if his authority had been curtailed in any way.
Midfield General,
"Fergie seems to have lost faith with Berbatov, and who can blame him? I reassert that we should NEVER buy another over-priced over-rated (by loudmouth cockneys) Spurs player. Berbatovs was the best chance of the game. I'm pretty sure if Rooney had passed the ball properly when Berbatov was clean through it would have been a better chance. Awful through ball. But because its Rooney it is ok is it? I am a huge Rooney fan but I dont see how it is fair when he has an off game its fine but Berbatov does and its a disgrace? If the roles were reverse and it was Berbatov putting in that through ball for Rooney I'd bet that you would blame Berbatov for a lazy pass and costing us another huge chance eh?
We actually need a holding midfield enforcer as well, it doesn't seem as if Hargreaves will be back anytime soon.
Someone from the same mould as Ince, Robson, Keane or even Claude Makalele.
Put Berbatov out on loan, he scores for Bulgaria, but he doesn't seem to be able to score for us, glaring miss against Villa.
If Real Madrid paid £35M for Benzeema, I don't think they will drop the price enough to meet Fergies "value for money" policy, do you?
On another note, the pole in goal is doing well and deserves to stay in net.
Lets hope he keeps it up, because we have no money!
Is anyone in any doubt that we are skint? If not, maybe you should have opposed such a heavily leveraged takeover at the time, like anyone with any sense. Our current financial state was utterly predictable.
Hunterlaar is rubbish, he is Blackburn quality. Why has he failed at Real Madrid, why has he failed at AC Milan. Why would United want him? Benzema too flatters to deceive he is just another Rooney
Free Red, you don't make payments on PIKs, so you don't fall behind. Did they not brief you at the MUT propoganda school?
if there is any truth in the above article, then i would like to see fergie sell nani (probably still get 10-14 million for him) and replace him with ashley young and use some of the ronaldo money and buy benzema!
Utter tosh again. Does the second sentance in this article not negate the rest of it?
Got to say Cahill at Bolton is a class player in a rubbish team.
Long term, he's only 23 and is already looking to break into the England team.
Looking at Lescott and what Hughes paid for him, Cahill would be a bargain at £7-8 million.
A run in the United team and a good World Cup for Cahill and long term United will be saiving £20 million and what they would have to shell out for an international centre half of his age.
5 years time a a centre half duo of Evans and Cahill. Anyone agree?
