Rodrigo Tello's first-half effort did the damage, just as Elvir Bolic broke Sir Alex Ferguson's team all those years ago - goalkeeper Rustu Recber the constant - with United left to do a spot of naval gazing over the winter months.
A point at Wolfsburg in a fortnight will still secure top spot in Group B, qualification having already been achieved.
But, Gabriel Obertan apart, Ferguson knows his United team laboured badly against a side that had collected just a single point from their four previous matches.
A bit like England manager Fabio Capello in Qatar, the United boss discovered his back-up is not really cutting it just now, leaving him to cross his fingers that the watching Rio Ferdinand heads a list of returning soldiers when battle recommences in February, when, unlike now, there will be no redemption after failure.
The outcome was particularly galling for Ben Foster, who had so little to do.
To say there was a bit of pressure on Foster before kick-off was sizeable understatement.
A lot of it was self-inflicted. In grumbling quite so publicly about his perceived status as Reds' third choice goalkeeper while at the same time being good enough to start England's last two internationals, Foster ensured there would be a fairly intense focus on him the next time he was picked by Ferguson.
His recall was accompanied by words of high praise from his manager for CSKA Moscow stopper Igor Akinfeev, someone United were supposedly considering as Edwin van der Sar's replacement when the veteran Dutchman eventually calls time on his stellar career.
Ferguson's assertion that rumours he wants to sign the Russia international are “not true” will be greeted with a pinch of salt by the sceptics and certainly Foster had no reason to feel comfortable.
So, to be beaten after 20 minutes by a long-range strike that appeared to catch him slightly flat-footed was not the best way for Foster to respond.
Consolation could be taken from the slack defending that created the space for Tello to shoot.
The strike itself took a slight deflection off Rafael Da Silva that took it further out of Foster's reach but it was with a slight shake of the head and a sense of foreboding that the former Watford goalkeeper picked the ball out of his goal.
United were fortunate not to be further behind at the break but Michael Fink spoiled an otherwise excellent central midfield display by clipping the outside of a post with a 12-yard effort after the home defence had been opened up far too easily once more.
Yet on the whole, it had been an encouraging first-half for a youthful Red Devils side that only needed to preserve that long unbeaten home run to confirm themselves as Group B winners with a game to spare.
Strikers Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck both caused Besiktas problems in their own way.
The Italian was prepared to shoot from distance while Welbeck had a more nimble approach to unlocking the defence of a side that conceded eight to Liverpool on their last visit to England two years ago.
Obertan made the biggest impact.
For those still missing Cristiano Ronaldo, the Frenchman performed some fleet-footed stepovers and was not scared to use his pace down the right flank.
And, although his head seemed to drop near half-time when a couple of decisions went against him, it was Obertan who lifted flagging United spirits after an hour when he collected the ball inside his own half and sprinted past a couple of lame tackles before drawing an excellent low save out of Rustu.
He also looped a Macheda cross onto the roof of the net, at no little cost to Ibrahim Toraman, who was carried off with a suspected broken nose after accidentally being caught by an Obertan elbow.
But Obertan apart, a malaise had gripped home ranks. The introduction of Michael Owen was followed by a Ferguson expletive as he watched Darron Gibson curl a poor free-kick straight at Rustu.
It proved to be the Republic of Ireland international's last involvement as Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra were called upon to execute one of those famous rescue acts.
The task proved beyond them, with Rustu producing two excellent flying saves to deny Macheda and Wes Brown to give himself another night to remember at Old Trafford.

we were toatlly inept, bereft of ideas, devoid of shooting and utterly pathetic in the second half, well apart from the stone wall penalty which we dont get because of SAF slagging the refs!
I really feel sorry for the average united punter who had to pay good money to watch that @#$%^&
why the hell wouldnt you trot out your best team - win the game by half time - and then take the stars off for the portsmouth game - no what does SAF do, he plays that crap side loses the game and now we have to go wolfsburg to win the group which would have been well within our grasp with a decent side
wellbeck and macheda were useless no wonder they dontn get a run in the first team at the EPL level
darron gibson who promises so much was woeful
SAF's tactics are beyond my ken, time for him to leave after this season where we will absolutely nothing
was feeling quite good after the liverpool result yestersday now I am totally bummed, thanks SAF

Look lets be honest and cut out all the crap of 'oh its a meaningless game, oh it was a dead rubber match, oh they are only kids'etc...
I have been one of the most vocal advocates of giving the kids a chance and to be brutally honest, Im disgusted at how all 14 players involved tonight played!!!
No drive, no desire, no impetus...are they all strangers or something, the passing was erratic at best...we really were very very very poor and Im disgusted
Is this what getting a chance means to them, a performance like that? Well I hope to god that SAF is giving them all the hairdryer treatment, because they all need a severe kick up the arse and a reality check!!!
The performance was like the atmosphere...dire and not the way George Best's anniversary should have been marked!!
Disgusting!!!

fergie has made too many rubbish buys in the last 5 years, and it's coming back to haunt him. neville & brown should be nowhere near the united first team now, and i would also add owen, gibson, park and o'shea to that list too.
where was berbaflop and valencia? what have they done in there united careers to deserve a rest? if rooney and ronaldo [when he was here] could play every game then so should these over priced and over rated players.
now we have to go and get a draw in germany which means we have to play a decent team, so why didnt fergie do that today? why save everybody? for god sake we only playing portsmouth!
need quality players in asap or we are in danger of becoming also runs.
read the cole story about not signing torres, he said united's scout's looked at what torres did after him collecting the ball in different area's of the pitch, and with our dumb scouts he failed! so what i want to know is how on earth did berbaflop pass our scouts test?! i guess a large briefcase to mr martin ferguson probably did the trick.

The game highlighted the difference in squads, chelseas 2nd team packed full of internationals ours kids and players no longer good enough for the 1st team ever, Question why cant we unearth a fabergras type of player? everyone of our central midfielders are so laboured on the ball and dont make space or create anything, and when we needed a spark the subs used barring evra were awful, owen who unless the ball is laid on a plate is never involved and carrick sideways man gave the ball away more than gibson did.
Barring watching the pool players huddled round the monitor watching themselves go out last night, the 2nd funniest football moment of the week was listening to the donut craig burley trying to explain why park is a good player for united, I think he mumbled hard working bf changing the subject after thinking about it for about 5 mins.
Team wise evra did more attacking than our forwards when he came on wellbeck and macheda just occupied the same space and went greedy everytime they got near the box, park pants, oberton glides well with the ball and did ok but someone tell him to stop the step overs everytime, anderson crap how he escapes abuse I dont know, gibson pondersome, nev did ok along with brown and vidic, rafael sorry just makes so many mistakes every game he plays, we are fond of playing every player out of position why not just have the twins as wingers as defensively I'm not convinced by either, foster one shot one goal, the crowd woeful.
Finally any chance of the players staying behind and practising free kicks and corners as no one seems to be able to do either.

what we learned tonight.
neville is in the dog days of his united career .
vidic can't pass
we need cover for evra at full back surely there is somebody somwhere who can pass cross tackle with the left.
gibson wo'nt make it at united.
andersen is stagnating and making no progress not much better than nani .
obertan should be pushing to start saturday
park sold 150,000 credit cards in korea tonight and as ALWAYS got substituted.
wellbeck/macheda 2 raw talents not quite ready to mix it at this level yet but sure their time will come.
playing a left back who cant cross kick shoot pass with his left and pairing him up with a left winger who can't either is JUST BLOODY STUPID.
it is not acceptable losing at home to such a poor team and damages our worldwide reputation.
this was a dead rubber and BAD VALUE FOR MONEY this stage of the competition is shit and needs changing.

They're kids learning their trade so SHUT UP and give them time to develop. Experiences like this will make them more aware of what is required and the next few years are going to be very exciting.

IN 4 or 5 years will these players still be at United, Welbeck, Macheda Obertan Gibson, who does disappoint thought he looked one for the future, Foster, sorry a big NO. Obertan reminds me of Bellion lots of pace but no end product how many times did he get past the fullback then fail to deliver. Welbeck, and Mahceda are as in a previous post to greedy and looked jointed at the hip. Plus neither can control the ball to their feet bounces off everytime. Plus neither of these were as good as Rossi and Ewbanks Blake and they got shipped out. Also why was Tosic not included in the squad for the CL at least he makes an effort.
Can't see us beating Wolfsburg so will have to contend with second spot.
Anderson did disappoint tonight but it is always the same he plays well and then gets dropped where he should be in all the time, reminds me of Forlan can't perform when they are constantly in and out of the team, Forlan had a run of 8 games and scored 6 goals then got dropped, then goes to spain and two seasons it the top scorer, Anderson was a good player in POrtugal.
Also Nani is a right winger yet always gets stuck on the left same with Park then people wonder why they don't do well each week.
Sorry fergy you got it wrong again qualify then change the team.
Agree with one comment on MUTV after the game in that we will not win anything but maybe the Fa cup, as next week you can be assured that Spurs will field a strong team not reserves, and also Portsmouth on Saturday we will be playing a team with a new manager and we normallly do not do well in these circumstances.
Still not changed my mind about us winning anything this season, a place in the top 4 at best.

I cannot help thinking how naive it was to sell the best player in the world (most suited player to the Prem by a country mile) and not get in 1-2 outstanding players, the club knew this would happen, and as such, had plenty of time to address this. Ah well, hope we maybe pick up some class in January or completely go for it next summer with money being spent on proven class.
but yeah, not a tragic result by any means..hope Macheda gets some more games soon, with our other strongest 10 players
