SIR Alex Ferguson believes this season's Premier League will turn into a two-horse race.
The United manager admits the Big Four's monopoly of the Champions League places is coming under growing pressure - but he only sees United and Chelsea as realistic contenders for the big prize.
"I had a feeling about there being a change last season. The top teams are losing games and more points than ever through the early part of the season," said Ferguson.
"That gives rise to the hope that it could be a very competitive league. But my experience tells me that two teams break away towards the last part of the season."
The Scot believes the much-prised fourth Champions League slot is far harder predict, with four clubs chasing the tails of Liverpool and Arsenal.
"I could toss a coin and that could be my best chance of deciding who could break into the top four out of Tottenham, Aston Villa, Everton and Manchester City with all the money they have," added the Reds boss.
"That's a difficult competition in itself and any one of them is capable of doing that."
Ferguson was speaking at an inaugural dinner of the League Managers' Association Hall of Fame 1000 club, celebrating those who have managed more than 1,000 domestic league or cup matches.
The English leagues have boasted 18 such managers, including the late Sir Matt Busby, Sir Bobby Robson, Brian Clough and Alec Stock.
Hair-trigger
Ten surviving members were present at the Hilton hotel in London, with Ferguson joined by Dave Bassett, Steve Coppell, Brian Horton, Lennie Lawrence, Harry Redknapp, Denis Smith, Jim Smith, Graham Turner and Neil Warnock.
Ferguson also admitted football had been taken over by a new breed of chairmen and owners with a hair-trigger for sacking managers.
With his son Darren sacked as Peterborough manager earlier this month, despite leading the club to back-to-back promotions, Ferguson said: "It's a different world we're in now.
"Managers were always sacked but in most cases there was a reasonable cause. A run of bad results. But I remember Peter Reid was sacked after five games at Manchester City at the start of the season.
"Ruud Gullit was sacked a few games into one of his seasons at Newcastle. There is an instant response from chairmen which has been unusual in recent years.
"We have a new breed of chairmen and new owners. We have Americans, Chinese, Russians. How they achieved their money is not what football is used to.
"The sudden wealth [has brought] the quick reaction of chairmen to what happens on the football field."

My advice to Fergie would be to get his Ronaldo money out at Christmas and buy as many of Aston Villa's young stars as £80 mill will get you these days, otherwise he can say sayonara to the Champions League next season.

Brighton boy, shouldn't you be writing for the Pink Press? My advice to you would be stop talking about matters you know nothing about, i.e the Champions League, (the prem, the FA Cup, the League Cup, winning, holding trophies aloft, keeping hold of 'top signings', filling stadiums, class, etc, etc, etc.........)

Sorry mate, Fergie is just messing around. However with his track record, it may well be another Chelsea/United show. Therefore Fergie is making his judgement from a sound historical base.
What do you base your assumptions on?

Citys run of 5 consecutive draws has likely cost them third spot already in a seaon which began with much bravado and posturing from Mark Hughes - even fooling City fans in to believing their ambitions ough to be winning the league. Honestly, I mean how naieve can City fans be?!
So 1st, 2nd & 3rd places are already looking unatainable, anything less than 4th spot would be a complete disaster relative to all that bravado at the begining of the season. How long are the money-grabbers Adebayor, Robinho, Tevez et al going to hang around to play in the Europa League or whatever it's called these days?! It could be the Mickey Mouse Cup for as insignificant as it is.
Fergies decision not to spend £25 mil plus £100k + on Tevez has been vindicated - despite what manutd.com printed we all know it was Fergie & United who turned his back on Tevez rather than vice versa.
Now, where was I?
This is how it feels to be City...This is hor it feels to be small...
Sing along!!

I base my assumptions on having watched your short on talent team sweat blood for each other to do as well as they have done this season. Don't get me wrong, Fergie is a great coach to get this much blood out of a stone. But if performances slip so will results.
Is a genuine Utd fan going to come on here and agree with me that this is one of the weakest Utd squads (relative to the rest of the league of course) for the last 20 years?

United have lost two of the last 3 in the PL and Arsenal haven't lost (7 games) since losing to City !
United have already started to fail, so SAF hoping Arsenal do their yearly 'drop off' is immaterial, as by Christmas Arsenal will be a minimum of 6 points ahead of United, based on playing the same number of games. (Rags, copy and paste this on to your PC, so you can all tell me I told you so at Christmas).

The season has a long way to go yet......so keep the party poppers on hold or you may just find yourself as a party pooper...
By the way isnt it a little ironic that SAF seems to have written Aresnal off following the injury to RVP...I would say that Arsenal and Chelsea are more likely to finish 1-2......
Lets review in March!!!!!!!!!!!!!
