He will know United have not hit the heights yet this season, but he cannot fail to be pleased with the way the campaign has gone so far.
With Owen Hargreaves set to return and Gabriel Obertan making a promising start, Fergie can only hope there is more to come.
That doesn't mean he won't do some fine tuning in the New Year.
Even if United's defence has looked shakier than usual in recent weeks, I remain confident about the personnel and the strength in depth.
But that is arguably not the case in midfield and attack.
Much will depend on how Hargreaves returns - and should he make a full recovery from his double knee operation, Ferguson will be able to call upon a truly world class performer to boost an area where United have been found wanting on occasion.
The Reds boss is too reliant on Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes in the centre.
Shy
United have looked shot-shy this season - and for all their promise, Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda don't look ready to push for regular first-team places.
Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen are impressive foils for Wayne Rooney, but you wonder if Ferguson will be tempted to add more firepower in January. He has already hinted he would like to spend during the window, which is not his usual style.
United find it difficult enough to find a bargain with prices usually inflated when they come knocking - add to that the fact that they've got the best part of £80m burning a hole in their pocket and it is understandable Ferguson will look to tread carefully.
What's more, the very fact he will be looking for someone in January will convince selling clubs United are desperate and therefore willing to pay over the odds.
It was the inflated transfer market that convinced Fergie to spend only modestly last summer, and I'd be surprised if he is willing to change that philosophy in January. So don't expect Europe's biggest names to arrive at Old Trafford this winter.

SAF wants 4 proven strikers to utilise, as he did back in the day. He clearly doesn't see welbeck and macheda as the 4th man at the moment. If he can get his hands on a better suited partner to Rooney he'd have owen and berba on the bench as Ole and teddy were back in the day... how long they'd be happy on the bench is an entirely different tale.
I disagree that we need more in the midfield, we simply need the players we've got to up their performances.
We also need defensive coverage, especially at centre half.
I can't agree with David Sadler here.
Fergie will definitely be wielding the cheque-book at Christmas. The current squad is one of the weakest Utd have had for many years and is also suffering from injuries and a reliance on ageing star players to carry the team. Hats off to them, they have sweated blood to do as well as they have done so far, thats pure good team spirit and the benefit of having been coached into a winning mentality. But seriously, the last time Utd's star man was of the calibre of Darren Fletcher (who don't get me wrong - has been good) was back in the 1980s or early 90s.
Fergie will know in his heart of hearts that if performances start to dip below 100% with this squad then Utd could suffer a sharp downturn in results and league position. He will have to bring in some reinforcements to steady the ship.
As we all know, Fergie has made some shrewd impact signings over the years such as Cantona and Henrik Larrsson. However, he has also had quite a few howlers when it comes to signing foreign stars with no Premiership experience. So, what'll it be this time?
Vidic and Evra were both bought in the same January window.
This season please please sign Villa, he is even better than Torres.
His international scoring record is nearly double that of Torres and it is very impressive.
His scoring record is this:
Sporting Gijon
0.47 goals a game
Real Zaragoza
0.42 goals a game
Valencia
0.67 goals a game
Spain
0.62 goals a game to 0.32 for Torres
Obviously these are no guarantee for his time at United but I think he's the type who could make the move.
Break the bank.
We need a keeper and a proven midfiled player , that is unless OH is back and fit to play his part , he is badly needed !
As usual, David, your views are sound and sensible. However, our midfield needs stregthening. Let's hope that Owen Hargreaves will return soon.
We need to find another R.V.N out of somewhere ,a striker who will get you 25+ a season and your right in what you say Monkey tennis?, yes please the only thing is the £30 or £32 million that we payed for Berbatov is 2 much for a man to sit on the bench and your right in saying we don't know how long they'd be happy sitting there.
It says it all about berba that when the big games come about we go 4-5-1 and he's on the bench or dropped.

Villa has said repeatedly and over several years that he does not want to play outside of Spain.
Even if he could be forced to sign for a foreign club, the likelihood is that he wouldn't be happy.
Some things are just not meant to be and Villa playing in the Premiership is one of them.
A more realistic target for Utd would be Peter Crouch.
swap berbaflop for dzeko and get villa. nuff said

the mirror claims that city are going to sign Lucas and Elmander for around 100million (each).
you bitters are funny as X
roykeane, i always wanted to play for city (not!)
If I could work out what was supposed to be funny about your post I would acknowledge it. If in fact it was funny then I might even laugh.
I think my mate, without irony, sacrcasm or an attempt at your brand of -ahem- humour - there is a very real chance that Utd may try to sign a Bolton player in the form of Gary Cahill.
Someone in a posting recently talked of playing Rooney just behind the two strikers, and I think that would be worthwhile to try that out with Rooney in behind Owen & Berba maybe in a formation something like Chelski's diamond. Have these three strikers been on the pitch together at all this season? It's worth a try. Owen hasn't been overly impressive to date, but I still think he lacks game time that he's not getting enough of yet.
And the return of the other Owen (H) could be the thing that makes r breaks our season. I do think midfield needs beefed up, and the addition of Rooney & Hargreaves would certainly do that.
And rather than go out and buy I think we should feed in more young blood sooner rather than later, maybe putting King, Kiko or Welbeck on late in games in place of Owen or Berba.
We did it with kids before, we can do it again.

it must be hard, as a City fan, to try to make a constructive post on a United thread. Since you believe United are so bad, why is it that we're third in the League (having faced difficult away games at Anfield and Stamford Bridge), already qualified for the next CL phase and are into the QF of the League Cup. I'm sure that City would love to have such a crisis!! As to your point about what would happen if we had a form dip, this is the secret of the top four - that they have squads to rest stars, cover for loss of form/injuries. This early part of the season is for the little lads - as the season wears on and teams struggle, the United's of the world stride on. That's why we're Manchester United......

just rumours mate.... errm 4:3 ... Remember the 96th minute.

I still think that Di Maria and Akinfeev are the only foreigners Utd should be looking at just now. The kids are all right and the experienced winners will get us through in the crucial weeks of the season. If Hargreaves gets back (??) that will be a bonus.
Uwe the Goat, Brighton, just outside Stockport. I reckon you are one of the more fairer blue posters, but...the United team will be there as usual come May. As long as Fergie preaches the siege mentality,
we'll be fine. Worry about you lot slipping down the table come this winter.
With three additional players (I'm including Hargo) iminent I don't see much movement from Fergie in the transfer window. One of the problems for Fergie is that Rooney does not like being subbed. Fergie needs to sort this out because the man needs rest and some days he is just not on so he is the one that should come off. Not Berbie. If anyone can find Owen in space it is Berbatof. All these people referring to him as Berbaflop should watch this mans first touch and his distribution. He is brilliant. I agree he could do with a few more goals but this team still has not gelled and the man that could change that is Hargreaves. We are still in good position to win trophies so we need to get Valencia and Obertan settled in and if we are going to buy then for me, Silva is the player. Can play either wing, fast and skillfull and it would resolve the Nani situation as Nani would have to move on. If we have Fletch, Hargo and Anderson producing in mid field then we are in good shape. Carrick will play himself out of his slump and will be fine. Giggs can still produce on the left and Scholes will be ideal in certain situations. We have more defensive coverage at centre half than any team in the prem. Evans, Brown and JOS as back ups to Rio and Vidic. What other team is even close?
why mr sadler did you not say WHY they wont spend big, THEY ARE SKINT, face it, hence all the talk of the great , beep beep , the one and only the return of the road runner owen h. ha ha ha

This would be the same David Villa who said:
'“I think I’m made to succeed in England but of course it’s one thing saying it and quite another getting there and then doing it.
“If an offer comes in I’m hungry to test myself in England.”
I would say to buy Di Maria and Suarez and then we would never ever need to buy another player for the next 10 years. There are am insane number of players already- but these are two talents that are the best.
Fergie said Owen will play a bigger part in the second half of the season so it will be interesting to see if he gets more game time still question if he is fully fit. With the couple of young lads due in January i reckon our buisness is done already. The only thing i can see happening is if a decent stricker becomes availlable at a reasonable price or Valencia decide to let Silva go Villa a great player but is close to 30 and wont leave Spain.
Uwe the Goat, Brighton,
Peter Crouch? Suited for United? Good God!
Bring back Nistelrooy....he want regular football to be selected for the World Cup....Ruud is an instinct Killer ..Am sure he will score more goals than A berbatof or Owen ...
I also think that a top world class midfielder is missing in the Utd squad...Thanks to schoals..even at 35 he is still helping...but we need fresh legs....May be Hargreave can step in...but dont know how his come back will be....
But i do think that Man u is missing a leader...who can drive on the team...to lift the game...to motivate players...like Roy Keane....
Just remember when Ronaldo was here...there was an excitement in the team...during the match ...this is missing at Utd....hope that Obertan can bring back this exitement coz i think he has the capacity of dribbling...tricks...quick...
Utd for life
